Howdy beheld,

To be honest that thread title was a bit confusing, but the log shows at least one instance of some IAC Search and Media search hijacking software so I can assume you have MyWebSearch or some other infection variant here. You also have SpywareCleanerService, which if you check here you will see this is not recommended software. And along with that Spyware Terminator, which is a product of IBIS (now called Xacti), the creators of the WebSearch and HuntBar spyware infections (see note here). If you check other threads in our forum you will see this is a little used item as it is not known for being very effective. Given these issues of questionable installed software let's go ahead and see what all is installed there first.

Open Hijackthis.
Click Config - Misc Tools - Open Uninstall Manager.
A list of the entries in Add/Remove programs will appear.
Click on Save List...
The list will be saved as 'Uninstall_list.txt'
Copy & Paste the contents back here for review.

Also Go Here and download Silent Runners to your desktop. Run it, and post back here the log it creates. If your AV queries the script, allow it to run. It's not malicious. It will create a file named Startup Programs, and will notify when the scan is complete. Copy the log from the Startup Programs file back here.

No FunWeb etc I had expected to see installed, but the Silent Runners scan reflects info on infection that has been there we can act on now.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"KavSvc"=-
Open Notepad and copy and paste the above text (inside the box) into the text file. Now go to File > Save As and call it notkav.reg. Where it says "Files of Type", select All Files and click on Save. Exit Notepad, double-click on the file and ok the prompt asking if you wish to merge the file with your registry.

Then close all open programs/windows and Go to Start – Settings – Control Panel. Click on Add/Remove Programs. If any of the following programs are listed there, click on the program to highlight it, and click on Remove. Then close the Control Panel.

One of these duplicated antivirus softwares:
a-squared Free 1.6
AVG Free Edition

Logitech Desktop Messenger (Unecessary - Monitors your system and sends reports back to Logitech in order to, as Logitech puts it "Enhance the customer's aftermarket experience")
SpywareTerminator

Be sure to reboot after the uninstalls. Then Download ComboFix.exe from here to your desktop, and click the downloaded file to run the repair.

When the command window opens, select 1 (and Enter). Allow the scan to run. When completed a text window will appear - please copy/paste the contents back here. This log can also be found at C:\ComboFix.txt.

A caution - do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop.

Post back the combofix.txt log and a new HijackThis log please.

Looks like you are getting things cleaned up nicely there. Let's clean more then get in a good scan after.

We'll need to use HijackThis now to make corrections, but it will need to be moved to a permanent folder (not that temp folder you have there) in order for backups to be saved. You can just go to the existing copy of HijackThis.exe:

C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for hijackthis.zip\HijackThis.exe

And move that to a permanent folder, such as creating a C:\HijackThis folder and move it there. Then click on the HijackThis file there to run the scan.

Once youhave done that Close Internet Explorer and all running programs and run a scan in HijackThis. Place a check next to all of the following lines, then select “Fix Checked” and close HijackThis.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://bar.mywebsear...?p=ZNxmk762YYUS
O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} - http://ak.imgfarm.co...tup1.0.0.15.cab
O23 - Service: SpywareCleanerService - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Spyware Cleaner\SCService.exe (file missing)

Then Make sure you can View Hidden Files. Also uncheck "Hide Extensions for Known File Types"

Do a search ( Start - Search/Find - Files or Folders) for the following hilighted folders (shown in Bold), and if found, delete them. Now uninstalled these can be removed.

C:\Program Files\a2 Free
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\LOCALSERVICE\APPLICATION DATA\Spyware Terminator
C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\SYSTEMPROFILE\APPLICATION DATA\Spyware Terminator

Go Here and download ATF cleaner. Click on the downloaded file to run it, and select "Select All", then click Empty Selected (and close ATF).

If you have them, also click on Firefox/Opera at the top and repeat the steps (and close ATF). Firefox/Opera will need to be closed first for the cleaning to be effective.

Then reboot, and after the reboot
Go here for an online AV scan (requires IE to run). If your AV alerts you while the scan installs ignore this - Panda's Active Scan method is often mistaken for infection activity.

Scan "Local Disks" and when finished save the scan log and then post the log here. To save the log first select the See Report button, then select the Save report button, and post that log back here along with a new HijackThis log please.

Although I posted Panda's main website instead of the exact scan link it has the Active Scan link listed, so I would assume the scan was down when you tried. Mostly either tools used in our work (like that older l2mfix) or harmless cookies found, and some installers for undesirable software. Also Reg Clean, which lately has been getting itself on the undesirable list as well. That software's .dll file found indicates it has been installed, so on your system I would assume it is that named Registry Cleaner there. The HP files are harmless remnants of when the system was installed.

I did also check out this one software indicated as having an infected file embedded in it's setup file:

Adware:Adware/Confusearch Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\Brians Stuff\Startup Mechanic 2.0.1 setup.exe[STRAd32.dll]

That STRAd32.dll, although not part of the later version I had access to, is not necessarily an indicator of infection, so likely only showing by Panda because it was located like it is. However I took a look at Startup Mechanic to be sure. No infection I saw, but It indicated Sigmatel SysTrayApp sound card software as harmful, and my igfxtray Intel chipset user interface as useless, so be very cautious when trusting this software's choices.

Go to Start – Settings – Control Panel. Click on Add/Remove Programs. If any of the following programs are listed there, click on the program to highlight it, and click on Remove. Then close the Control Panel.

Registry Cleaner

Then Make sure you can View Hidden Files. Also uncheck "Hide Extensions for Known File Types"

Do a search ( Start - Search/Find - Files or Folders) for the following files/folders (shown in Bold), and if found, delete them.

Folders:
C:\Program Files\Registry Cleaner Trial

Files:
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\My Downloads\setuperrorguard.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\MSN-Winks.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\Install-Emoticons.exe

You can also delete that L2MFix folder, ComboFix.exe and any tools we sued here so far.

Then be sure to run ATF Cleaner after, and reboot to complete all changes made.

What issues are you having on this system at this time?

Glad to be of assistance. AVG Free is fine, as are other free AV's. best use is where you get your security rewards out of the softwares. Check out Tony Klein's info here for ideas in that area.
