HI, I posted this log and did not get the description of my problem. The search seems to have been hijacked. At first, IE6 would not run at all. but, I removed the Google toolbar with Control Panel/Add-Remove programs, and it started working again. But, new search windows open up sometimes when I have not requested any search. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ron Cobb Marietta, GA USA
Hello and Welcome to the forum.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Close all windows and browsers.
Open HijackThis

Click on Open Misc Tools
Click on Delete a File On Reboot
Click once on the files below to select them for deletion:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\uodnsjxm.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msmapibx32.exe

Click on the Back button to exit Process Manager

Next:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
HI, Thanks for this info and advice. When I began the steps, I discovered that the program uodnsjxm.exe was not in C:WINDOWS/system32. I reran HiJackThis and found that there was still an O4 entry for this file in the log, as there was in the log I posted. This I didn't understand, so I wanted to check back with you before proceeding further. Should I just go ahead with the steps leaving out the "Delete on boot" for this file, and the check for fixing this file in HijackThis? Since I deleted the Google Toolbar, the computer seems to run file, with IE6 even running faster than before. But, now if I enter www.google.com in the address line of IE6, it will bring up another search page, but only sometimes.

Should I just go ahead with the steps leaving out the "Delete on boot" for this file, and the check for fixing this file in HijackThis?

Yes, but be sure to add C:\WINDOWS\system32\msmapibx32.exe to "Delete on boot"
I completed the steps recommended. Here is is the new log file:

My machine is running OK it seems. But, I have not added the Google Toolbar back to my IE6, even though I use it extensively. Should I go ahead and add it back?

I did notice this one item in the log:

O23 - Service: ieupdater (Microsoft IE Updater) - Unknown owner - C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\~tmp0374.exe

Usually on startup, I get a message telling me the program ~tmp0374 has encountered a problem and needs to shutdown, and then asking me to allow a report of the failure to MIcorsoft. Sometimes I do report, sometimes I do not. I do not know what this program is. But, since the O23 line in the log says "unknown owner," is this some malware or something?

Thanks for all your help
That 023 is a indication of a infection

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log
I completed the SDFix successfully. My computer seems to be running very fast now. Here are the SDFix Report and a new HijackThis log:

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
My computer seems to run fine now. Haven't noticed any strange search pages.

I still haven't reinstalled the Google Toolbar. Will just go to the Google page when I need to search.

"Delete these Files if listed:
C:\web.exe
C:\DOCUMENTS and settings\Owner\LOCAL SETTINGS\Temp\bl4ck.com"

Did not fine dither of these files. Searched entire C: Drive.

Rebooted and reran HijackThis. Below is Log file.

Thanks

I still haven't reinstalled the Google Toolbar

Give it a try after following my all clean post.

You can remove any programs / Tools I had you install. Use Add/Remove Programs to remove if listed there otherwise just delete them and empty recycle bin.

Here's my usual all clean post

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection.
You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Download and install Ad-Aware.
You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis
just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Using IE-SPYAD to help block unwanted sites and activities

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

So how did I get infected in the first place?
