A command prompt opened in the middle of my desktop. It said it was updating Vista, so it went through it's process, and then asked to press any key to restart - or else the changes would not take effect.
After restarting, I got the following error message:
1) Are you sure this will solve my problem? 2) How do I load this onto my computer when it will not even boot? 3) How am I to be sure that I won't get a virus when downloading this?
After reading all of the comments, I've found that this download is virus-free, and will fix my problem. Apparently this only happens on Dell and HP machines, and mine is an Dell.
I know the answers to all of my previous questions except question number two.
Do you have access to another computer (you must, you're posting )…..anyway, download it to a CD, then use it on the machine with Vista
I'll keep my fingers and eyes crossed for ya'
I copied the files to a CD, and put them in my computer.
If I click "F12" on the first screen, I get 5 options:
Internal HDD > Gives me the same error message as I stated in my first post when clicked
CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive > Gives me the same error message as I stated in my first post when clicked
Onboard NIC > Gives me information about my computer, then proceeds to the error message I stated in my first post
BIOS Setup > Gives me information about my computer
Diagnostics > Runs test on my computer (I ran these test earlier, and no problems were found.)
Once I clicked "CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive," it loaded for a bit, then gave me the error message I stated in my first post.
How do I get this program to my computer?!
Okay, let's back up. You have a Dell Computer….Is it new?
Are you downloading Vista OS from the Internet?
Do you have a Vista DVD (upgrade?) that is supposed to be compatible with your Dell Computer? <–2 questions in one
Is your Copy of Vista an OEM?
My computer is a Dell, and it's close to two years old.
I don't have a CD for it, I downloaded it off the internet.
I'm not sure if my computer is compatible, but it ran.
If OEM means legal, then no…
Oops!
You're going to need a legal version of your operating system, or else you will be having problems forever.
Not the least of which, will be that Vista will stop functioning after 30 days if not legally Activated.
That 2 year old machine may or may not be "Vista Ready".
I'd seriously consider sticking with Win XP.
Best Regards
I wasn't having problems with it until a few days ago. See, I downloaded it off the internet as an illegal copy, and after the crack didn't work, I had planned on purchasing a serial number for it. I simply forgot about it, and thus the problems occured.
Dell is sending me a XP CD so I can re-install it, and a number of drivers, also.
Thanks for the help!
Very Good – getting the legit XP CD from Dell.
How much are they charging for the replacement set?
Ignore question if you prefer, but I've never purchased one from Dell.
HP charges $30.
