About two days ago I started recieveing these odd pop ups trying to get me to download some program called Ultimate Defender. I just thought it was a simple internet bug, so I ran my nortons Anti virus Quick Scan. Nothing was detected, but yet the pop ups continued. This led me to believe it was something much much bigger. I then ran a full computer scan with Nortons. Two things were found, but niether of them fixed the problem. Now there is a big red Biohazard sign on my desktop, and some new icons have appeared there as well. Will edit post with HJT log when I can get an IE box open long enough to reach this post. If anyone has some quick ideas to fix this, I would love to hear them.

Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Hi,

35 hours of running a Norton full scan did absolutly nothing for me D=

Yes, very sad. And on top of that we will clean this with tools that cost absolutely nothing. Granted, you need to know what you're doing with them but still…

Okay let's get off our Soapboxes and continue the fix.

Running the Clean
Download AVG Anti-Spyware from Here and save that file to your
desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  • Once you have downloaded AVG anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop
and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition
    files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "
    Update now
    " link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a
progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of
the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then
    select "Delete".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Do not automatically generate reports"
Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

______________________________

Warning: running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
______________________________

Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.

[external image: Posted Image]

The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.
______________________________

Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Proceed like this:
  • Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
  • Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
  • In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
  • Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
  • Click OK.
Next Click Start, click Control Panel and then double-click Display. Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see a checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click Ok then Apply and Ok.

Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.
______________________________

Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start AVG Anti-Spyware, and run a full scan.
  • IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or
programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab
then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • AVG will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little
    time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all
    actions
    "
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the
screen and save it as a text file on your Desktop (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
Close AVG Anti-Spyware and Reboot in Normal Mode.
______________________________

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter
Answer Yes to the question "Restore Trusted Zone ?" by typing
Y and hit Enter.

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Your may need several replies to post the requested logs, otherwise they might get cut off.
Safe mode eh? My computer has some difficulty running that mode, so it may take a while to get that info back to you. I would also like to point out that my comptuer has over 700,000 files on it. Hopefully AVG scans them all faster than Norton does…

Safe mode eh?

My computer has some difficulty running that mode, so it may take a while to get that info back to you.

Do you know why? What happens when you try to run in Safe Mode?

I would also like to point out that my comptuer has over 700,000 files on it. Hopefully AVG scans them all faster than Norton does…

Wow, yes, the scan will take some time but shouldn't be as long as the Norton one was. Start it before you go to bed tonight and let it run through the night. What size hard drive you have? 300GB? Bigger?
No clue why, all I know is that it runs a bunch of files over my screen, then in about 10 minutes it will start safe mode. 200gigs. And dude, its a little after noon here. At the rate AVG is going, I should be done in an hour or two. 216k files scanned 26 minutes.
1-2 hours… shoulda been 1 to 6 >.<

Anyway I'm sure you can tell these logs appart, but I'll be nice and label them for ya.

Current State of Computer: No background (not complaining though, I like the plain blue look…), no pop ups, and no virus warnings as of now. Shall I be like a school girl and scream in joy and delight, or shall it be held in for another day or so?

Happy Readings. I have school tomorrow morning, so I won't be able to handle your suggestions until about 3 pm CST. So yay for you. You get a break from my problems. =P
Hi freelancer,

Looking better!

Run HijackThis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F4CF814F-970F-405D-A42C-0CE06EB97373} - (no file)

Then close all windows except this one and press Fix checked.

I hate to ask you to do this as I know this scan will take a long time but if you can start it before school tomorrow it would hopefully be done by the time you got home. Or start before bed tonight if you get this in time…I just think it's worth getting a deep scan here to make sure nothing is lurking in the shadows.

Using Internet Explorer, click on Kaspersky Online Scanner * Click 'Accept' in the window that pops up.
* You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click on the information bar and select Install ActiveX Control if so. This may happen more than once. That is OK. You also may get a warning from your Windows Firewall. You can tell it to unblock.
* The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
* Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click 'Next'.
* Now click on 'Scan Settings'
* In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database: 'Extended' (If available, otherwise 'Standard')
o Scan Options: 'Scan Archives' and 'Scan Mail Bases'
* Click 'OK'
* Now under 'Select a target to scan' select 'My Computer'
* The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete, it will display whether your system has been infected.
* Now click on the 'Save Report As…' button:
* Make sure it says Save as a text file - change it if not
* Save the file to your desktop.
Please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.

And I'll see you in the morning. D=
Hi freelancer,

Most of what Kaspersky found is in your Norton Quarantine, which can be emptied, and in restore points, which we'll clean up at the end of the fix. It also found the Smitfraud tool, which is normal and you can delete the tool.

One file to get though.

Download the Killbox.
Unzip it to the desktop

Double-click Killbox.exe to run it.

Select "Delete on Reboot".
Place the following line (complete path) in bold in the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox:

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\popcaploader.dll

Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt.
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

Your HJT log appears clean at this time. How is it running now?

Have a good first day of school.
Done.

New HJT log. Hope you think its all clear.

More like first day of week three. xD

Also do you know if there is an age requirement for the School? I'm only 16, but from the help you guys were able to give me, I think this would be a nice site to help out. I would donate of course, but no job = no cash. xD

HJT log is as follows…

Hi, Nope, no age requirement that I'm aware of. And I've met some pretty brilliant teenage computer techs in these forums. Be great to see you in the school. Looks good to me. Real question is…how's it running?
WoW + itunes + Xfire + MSN = No lag If you think thats a lot, I'm being easy on it today. xD Really, the 35 hours of norton actually DID something. No lag and my 400 kbs download speeds are back. I have no pop ups, no annoying virus things, no Biohazard signs… Is it crazy school girl screaming time?
Sounds good to me!

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which may be infected anyway).

Click Start>Help and Support>Undo changes to your computer with System Restore
Select Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create

Click Start>Run and type Cleanmgr
Click the More Options Tab.
Click Clean Up in the System Restore section.

In addition to updating and using what you currently have you may want to consider the following:

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly or set your computer to receive automatic updates. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Install SpywareGuard - SpywareGuard provides a real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareGuard to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Use IESpy-Ad
IESpy-Ad will block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. Instructions for set up and use can be found at the website.

Update all of your Anti-Malware programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed and the ones you are currently running regularly. Without regular updates you Will Not be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Here is a great link to a post here on securing your PC after an attack.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.
