My computer has been infected by Adware.Agent.BN
I have followed the directions given to trig by IndiGenus (http://forums.whatthetech.com/Adware_agent_bn_t82209.html). The popups are not as bad as they were but I cannot get rid of this program. On top of that I have lost Control Panel from my Start Menu. Could someone please look at some logs and give me directions to fix the problem?

Hi Jaot and welcome to the forums.

While following along with other posts can be a good learning experience, every issue is usually a little different, thus making any cleaning process different. It is just something to be careful of in the future.

Also, unfortunately, while the infections you have may resemble the other user's you mentioned your's is A LOT worse.

Your computer is infected by a variant of the Sdbot trojan, which has Backdoor functionality. This can give intruders complete control of your computer, logging key strokes, stealing information, etc…

You are strongly advised to do the following immediately!:
  • Disconnect infected computer from the internet and from any networked computers until the computer can be cleaned.
  • Call all of your banks, credit card companies, financial institutions and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change *all* of your online passwords – for ISP login, email, banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, and any online forums or groups you belong to.Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passwords and transaction information.
Because of its backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure it can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. However, if you do not have the resources to reinstall your OS and would like me to attempt to clean your machine, I will be happy to do so.

To help you make a more informed decision, please read the following articles:
  • Danger: Remote Access Trojans.
  • When should I re-format? How should I reinstall?
  • How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and Credit Card Fraud?
Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask

Please let me know your decision and we'll get started with clean up if that's what you choose.
Hi Jaot,

My name is Dave. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can sometimes take a while to research so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • NOTE:Before we start: Please be aware that removing Malware is a hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

In light of this it would be wise for you to back up any files and folders that you don't want to lose before we start.

I need you to rename Hijackthis because I suspect that you may have the Vundo infection that can hide some entries in your log.
  • Please go to the folder where you saved Hijackthis.exe:
  • Right-click on it, then select Rename.
  • Name it something like: FindVundo.exe (or whatever you want)
  • Then double-click the renamed HJT to scan and then post the new logfile.
We are going to use HJT to create a list of your currently installed programs.1. Open HijackThis and click on the Config… button in the "Other stuff" section (lower right hand corner).
2. Click on the Misc Tools button.
3. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager… button.
4. Click on the Save list… button.
5. Save the file uninstall_list.txt to a convinient location. This should open Notepad with the list.
6. Please Copy and Paste the list into your next reply.

Hi Jaot, It doesn't look like HJT was renamed. Can you try that again and let me know if you have any questions. Also, please do me a big favor and turn off word wrap in Notepad when you copy and paste the log so it's not so broken up. To do that, in Notepad click Format > Word Wrap, and make sure it's not checked. Thanks

Is that better?
Using Windows Explorer navigate to the following file: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe Right click on the HijackThis.exe file and select rename. Now go ahead and rename it but make sure you keep the .exe at the end. You can name it anything. Findvundo.exe is fine. Now rerun the newly named file and post a log.
I believe you are talking about the file that is output in Notepad after running HijackThis, that's not it. I am talking about the actual HijackThis program file. It will be called HijackThis.exe. Rename that and then run this newly named program.

Hi Jaot,

I'm not sure what the problem is but it's still not renamed???? Let's go ahead and run a tool.

Download and Run ComboFix
  • Download this file from below:
    Here
  • Disconnect from the Internet, than disable your Anti-virus and any real-time Anti-spyware monitors that are running.
  • Then double click Combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply with a new HijackThis log.
Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
Note 2:Remember to re-enable your Anti-virus and Anti-spyware before reconnecting to the Internet.
