Hi, I am new to this forum. I tried to download HiJackThis from the link on TomCoyote's page and consistently get the following error message: The website declined to show this webpage HTTP 403 Most likely causes: This website requires you to log in. What you can try: Go back to the previous page. More information I have ZoneAlarm Security Suite running on my computer, but as far as I can tell it is not interfering or blocking this site. Is it possible that some malware is preventing me from downloading this program. If so is there a way around this problem. thanks in advance
Hello and Welcome to the Forum.

What link were you trying to use to download HJT?

There's a new version of HijackThis.

Click the "Save" button.

Please put your HijackThis in it's own folder, (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).
You can do a Right Click on any open area on the desktop, New> Folder, then rename the folder HJT.

Open HijackThis and select: Do a system scan and save a log file.

When the scan is finished, Click Edit> Select All> Edit> Copy> and paste its contents here [Add Reply].
Hi, thanks for picking up on my post. When I clicked on the link in your message I get the same error message: "The website declined to show this webpage HTTP 403 Most likely causes: This website requires you to log in. What you can try: Go back to the previous page. This error (HTTP 403 Forbidden) means that Internet Explorer was able to connect to the website, but it does not have permission to view the webpage. More information For more information about HTTP errors, see Help."
I know that link works.

Try this:

Download the attached HijackThis.zip file.

(Create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).
You can do a Right Click on any open area on the desktop, New> Folder, then rename the folder HJT.

Please unzip HijackThis in the new folder HJT.
Double Click HijackThis.exe and select: Do a system scan and save a log file.
Hi,
Sorry to be so much trouble, but I still had no luck in getting the download.

When I clicked on your attachment I get a new screen titled Attachment - Windows Internet Explorer.
Within the webscreen page it shows an address bar with the following: http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?act=…c&tid=82650

Then in a banner is says "Attachments: Downloading HiJackthis
Following the banner it shows the HiJackThis v2.zip file.

However at this point it is not downloading the file ….

When I click on the filename I am taken to another screen which has the following message:
"Board Message
Sorry, an error occurred. If you are unsure on how to use a feature, or don't know why you got this error message, try looking through the help files for more information.

The error returned was:
Sorry, but you do not have permission to use this feature. If you are not logged in, you may do so using the form below if available."

All the above between quotes is the contents of the message that I get. I don't understand it because I am logged into What the tech forums.
You have something stopping the downloads. Have you tried downloading anything before? Are you running Vista? Do you have administrator rights?
Hi, Sorry I started to add to my last message that I download files routinely and don't have this kind of problem. ZoneAlarm usually notifies me with a popup asking if I want to allow a download before it interfers with the process .. I have also checked the zonealarm control panel and do not see any indication that it is blocking this file.
Try this:

Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you, combofix.txt. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick while its running. That may cause it to stall
OK. That did it. BTW, I shut zonealarm down just in case it was interferring with the download.
following is the ComboFix log:

Did you shut down ZA before or after the combofix and HJT? I'm asking because it would be good to know if the ZA settings were stopping the download og HJT. I would suggest you enable ZA, but make sure windows Firewall is disabled. I'll look over the logs and post back.
Is your anti-virus program running?

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Yes, I tried to download ComboFix and had these same error box message. I then went out to ZDNet and tried downloading one of their files and received the unable to contact the website error message. Then I disabled za. Then I tried downloading ComboFix and was successful. Before running ComboFix I tried to download HiJackthis program and was denied. It was after running ComboFix that I was able to download HiJackthis
I will attach the hijackthis log file following this discussion.
you were right that the system was slow on booting up, so far it seems ok. I won't know until I use it a while. We never got into the discussion about why I was trying to download hyjackthis in the first, but the reason was because every now and then my computer would do strange things … like shutdown IE went I was browsing TomCoyote's site. I would try to go to a page that he discribed as having a good tool to check for virus or malware and all of a sudden (I mean like turning off a light kind of sudden) IE would just snap shut. I also was having trouble viewing some .pdf files and other weird things.

I now believe that some of my troubles are with the settings in ZA; however, I don't think that was the whole problem.
Did you find a virus or malware program? Looked like most of the things that were deleted from my registry file were the type that might make the computer sluggish, except for the two entries which indicated "no file".

Would appreciated if you could briefly share with me what you think we found.

BTW, do you recognize what this program is?
