Hello and Welcome to the forum.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

This is the infection you have.

W32/Rbot-AJA
Type Spyware Worm

How it spreads Network shares

Affected operating systems Windows

Side effects Allows others to access the computer
Steals information
Drops more malware
Downloads code from the internet
Installs itself in the Registry

Do you use this pc for any financial things like banking?

Your computer is very seriously infected and I will assist you from this point if you don't mind.

First off all, you need to be informed that your computer might be seriously compromised, you have a trojan of the Rbot/Sbot family, below is a general description of this family. You must be aware that if you have a system that has been completely compromised, the only thing you can do is to flatten the system (reformat the system disk) and rebuild it from scratch (reinstall Windows and your applications)

Backdoor.Rbot is a family of Trojan programs for Windows, which offer the user remote access to victim machines. The Trojans are controlled via IRC, and have the following functions:
  • monitor networks for interesting data packets (i.e. those containing passwords to FTP servers, and e-payment systems such as PayPal etc.)
  • scan networks for machines which have unpatched common vulnerabilties (RPC DCOM, UPnP, WebDAV and others); for machines infected by Trojan programs (Backdoor.Optix, Backdoor.NetDevil, Backdoor.SubSeven and others) and by the Trojan components of worms (I-Worm.Mydoom, I-Worm.Bagle); for machines with weak system passwords
  • conduct DoS attacks
  • launch SOCKS and HTTP servers on infected machines
  • send the user of the program detailed information about the victim machine, including passwords to a range of computer games
Evidence in your log:
O23 - Service: Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (lsass)

I would like to have more information about the Rbot variant present on your machine in order to find out what exactly could have been changed to your security settings and more precise info about what could have been compromised. With this type of infection you may have a rootkit on your computer also. Can you please perform the following:

Make sure that you can see hidden files.
  • Click Start.
  • Click My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Click OK.

Submit the file C:\WINDOWS\scvhost.exe to Jotti's scanner at:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/ Post the results here in the next reply.

IMHO, You need to disconnect this PC from the internet and from your network if it is on a network. Use it as less a possible.

What is a backdoor or remote access trojan?
Read this article.
Danger: Remote Access Trojans
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/…o/virusrat.mspx

Can you please post the results of the virus scanner and a new Hijackthis log please since this malware changes very fast especially when you reboot.
Egads this is scary then…thank you for replying. I submitted svchost.exe, it was actually in the system 32 folder of windows? the scan found nothing. I have two other computers on the network here, should I do anything with them? Yes, there have been times that I've checked my bank on this one, not recently, but mostly it's used by my daughter for games.

Thanks again

Eileen

Continued thanks,

Eileen
Doesn't look like it's active

Click Start > Run > and type in:

services.msc

Click OK.

In the services window find (lsass) Local Security Authority Subsystem Service
Right click and choose "Properties". On the "General" tab under "Service
Status" click the "Stop" button to stop the service. Beside "Startup Type"
in the dropdown menu select "Disabled". Click Apply then OK. Exit the
Services utility.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O23 - Service: Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (lsass) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\scvhost.exe (file missing)

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Well, I found lsass but it was already stopped and would not start, says the system couldn't find the file specified. I went ahead and disabled it. So with this the 023 lsas entry doesnt show up in a hijack this log, but it does when it is stopped/automatic startup. Should I go ahead and remove it as you instructed?

The one in the system 32 folder belongs there. Don't delete it. If it's gone from the HJT log then it's dead.
hmm…so you aren't seeing anything in this most current log? NOthing has changed, it still freezes up, typing is maddeningly slow…

Sorry to be a bother…just perplexed and nervous

Eileen

You need To disable TeaTimer, it can stop our fix.

1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts

The best way is to do both, Right click the system tray icon and shut down. This will reset TT's registry snapshot. Then, open spybot in advanced mode and turn it off. When cleaning is done, open Spybot in advanced mode to turn back on.

I feel like a complete idiot. I haven't a clue about what I'm doing wrong regarding your instructions, but I followed what you said about Spybot..and in services, lsass was already stopped and could not be started, it said the file was missing. Further, disabling it resulted in it not showing up in the HJT log. SO i went ahead and let it be automatic and then deleted it with HJT.. rebooted, it was back, 023 and file missing. What am I not following correctly in your directions? I"m so sorry.. < really appreciate your help…
