[Resolved]Restricted From Administrative Controls

I need help! I am new to the forum and am reaching out for anyone to help me! Disclaimer: I have limited knowledge of computers so be kind, please.

My computer had a ton of trojans and spyware that I have been working through. I had a friend help me through Hijak This and got all the nasties that he could find off the log; however, I still have no administrative controls. Everytime I try to run Task Manager or select My Computer properties, etc, the following comes up "Restriction - This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator."

This is a home computer - Dell Dimension desktop with Windows XP. My husband has been banned since he has a habbit of clicking on every pop up around and has caused havoc before - but this one has got me stumped!

Hello and Welcome to the forum.

It looks like you have 3 anti-virus programs running:
AVG, Trend and Symantec (Nortons). Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Open the HijackThis Folder. Find the file HijackThis.exe, Right Click on the file and Select Rename. Rename Hijackthis.exe to Spyware.exe.

Post a new HijackThis Log.

P.S. - Yes I do have several anti-virus/spyware running. I was extremely desparate and paranoid so I tried everything I could. I have free AVG anti-virus & spyware, Spybot Search & Destroy, and PC-Cillin (preloaded on the computer).

Don't worry about the anti-spyware programs yet.

You want to have only 1 anti-virus program running.

1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove all but 1 Anti-Virus programs


After the above:

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Sorry, I had to giggle for a minute! This is where I thump my head on my desk! I have no control panel in my Start Up. The only way I can get to it is by selecting Printers/Faxes and in the menu on the left I click on Control Panel. Then I get an error - "Restriction - This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator." I can't add or remove anything. I also can not access Task Manager - the same message comes up. I just tried it again and the same thing happens. Any other ideas?

Also, my computer is behaving much better now. During the week, I couldn't go more than 2 minutes without a pop up of alerts to infections/trojans or the computer resetting back to desktop losing whatever I was working on. It is now behaving well with no popups, no alerts and stays working. I just have no administrative abilities as described above.

Unless you know of another way to remove the programs, I am afraid I am at a standstill. Since I can't get into Control Panel to access the add/remove programs, I don't know how to get the others off. Any ideas?

Yes, I have a start up button and when I start up, I can chose one of two users (me or my husband). I can also select safe mode which gives me the third option of administrator. I had to log in that way a few times to get some of the virsues off when they wouldn't go away in my mode. But, I am also restricted with the same error in administrative (safe) mode, though if I try to access Control Panel or Task Manager.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.


(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Next:

Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you, combofix.txt. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick while its running. That may cause it to stall
