Let me know if your Control Panel has been restored, and if your computer is operating properly now.
Alright, that seemed to do the trick. Control Panel is back. Everything seems to be okay now but 2 days ago there was an incident. AVG informed be that info.exe was trying to start up on the other two profiles that are on this computer. I chose to let AVG heal the problem and I haven't got the message since. Should I be concerned about this?
Run a scan with AVG Anti-Spyware
  • Click on the Scanner button at the top.
  • Select the Settings tab.
  • Under How to act?, click on Recommended actions and select Quarantine.
  • Under How to scan?, check (tick) all the boxes.

  • Under Reports:, uncheck (untick) the Only if threats were found box and select Do not automatically generate report.
  • Under What to scan?, select Scan every file.
Next
  • Click on the Scanner button at the top.
  • Select the Scan tab.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below.
IMPORTANT: Don't click on the Save Scan Report button before you hit the Apply all Actions button.
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine (1), if not click on the link and choose Quarantine from the popup menu. (2)
    • At the bottom of the window click on the Apply all Actions button. (3)
      [external image: Posted Image]
  • When done, click the Save Scan Report button. (4)
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
  • If it finds anything please send me the report. If nothing found let me know and we'll see about securing your computer against further infection.
Can you send me a HJT log for each of the other accounts please, name them so I know which is which.
Okay, AVG Anti Spyware found 3 high risk files. When I tried to quarantine them I was informed that a particular file could not be removed without a bakup being made and wether I wanted to go ahead and remove it. Wether I chose yes or no AVG would immediately pick this file up and ask me whether I wanted to Heal it or move it to the virus vault. Then the process would start all over again with AVG Anti Spyware informing me about a different file it could not remove without making a backup. This seemed to be an endless cycle. Do you have any idea what could be happening here?
If you don't send me the report I asked for there's no way I can know. Please send me the AVG report as detailed in my last post. Also can you run a scan with Kaspersky and send me that report as well, along with a new HJT log.
Okay, here are the new logs. The problem I had last time was just AVG Spyware informing me that a backup could not be made when I quarantined some of the files. And for some reason, regular AVG was detecting these files as they were being quarantined by AVG Spyware. I have AVG and AVG Spyware running at the same time. So for this scan, I shut down regular AVG and it did not detect the files AVG Spyware was quarantining. Anyway, before doing the scans I deleted the other two user profiles that are on this computer because my roomates now primarily use my account. So we won't have to deal with those anymore. OK, far as I can see you're clean.

The files found by both AVG and Kaspersky are as follows.

System Restore Files (they can't infect you unless you do a system restore), we'll clean them out soon to take away that eventuality.

C:\System Volume Information\_restore{B37680B2-BA0A-4E5D-BF30-83E44C588624}

Encrypted backups made by the tools we've used to clean your machine,

C:\QooBox\Quarantine
C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles

they can't infect you, again we'll clear them out in a moment.

To clean out the quarantined files, and remove the programmes that created them (you don't need them anymore and they're updated regularly, so the versions you have won't be of use against future infections).
  • Double click OTMoveIt.exe to launch the programme.
  • Click on the CleanUp! button.
  • OTMoveIt will download a list from the Internet, if your firewall or other defensive programmes alerts you, allow it access.
  • You will be prompted to allow the clean up procedure, click Yes
  • When finished exit out of OTMoveIt
  • Now delete OTMoveIt.exe (if present).
To clean out your System Restore files. (this is the only way to do this).
  • Turn off System Restore.
    • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • Check Turn off System Restore.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Reboot.
  • Turn ON System Restore.
    • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • NOTE: only do this once, NOT on a regular basis.
Can you delete the following files please.

RegFix.reg
RegFix2.reg
RegFix3.reg

As far as I can see, your computer looks clear of infection now.

Are you still noticing any problems ?
  • If you are let me know about them.
  • If not it's time to make your computer more secure.
Below are a series of recommendations which will help you keep more secure online.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components. This is important as it's still possible to get infected through an old install even if you're using the latest version of Java.
  • Close any programmes you may have running, ESPECIALLY your web browser
  • Click Start > Control Panel.
  • Click Add/Remove Programs.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2, and install it to your computer.

Updating Windows and Internet Explorer
It is essential you keep your Operating System up to date with all the latest patches. The bad guys watch for the latest exploits, as soon as Microsoft brings out a patch, the bad guys will bring out an infection to exploit that vulnerability. If you don't have all the latest patches your computer is vulnerable. Please go to the windows update site and get the critical updates.

Use a "secure" browser
Install Internet Explorer 7 or an alternative browser like Firefox or Opera for more secure surfing.
Please remember that there is no such thing as a totally secure browser. Your browsing habits will be the major factor in determining just how safe you are online. If you visit, Crack/Warez sites, Porn sites, or other sites of a questionable nature, you still run a severe risk of getting infected.

The following are free programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A brief description is included with each item, click on name to go to download site.
  • Adaware SE Personal
Adaware is a free program. It scans for known spyware on your computer. These scans should be run at least once every two weeks. For more information, see this tutorial
  • Spybot S & D
Spybot is a scanner like Adaware. It scans for spyware and other malicious programs. It is important to have both Adaware and Spybot on your computer because each program provides unique detection and protection measures. Spybot has preventitive tools that stop programs from even installing on your computer.
To see how to set this up as well as more spybot features, see here
  • SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes "kill bits" in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here
  • IE Spyad
It puts many bad webpages on your restricted zones LIST. This means that you can still view the "bad" webpages, but the webpages can't do certain things (such as use javascripts and cookies). Use IE Spyad for single account computers, and IE Spyad 2 for multi account computers.
  • Hosts file:
  • Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file, here.
    • Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them.
    • In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages.
    • We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages.
    • However, it can slow down certain computers.
  • If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
    • Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen)
    • Click run
    • In the dialog box, type services.msc
    • hit enter, then locate dns client
    • Highlight it, then double-click it.
    • On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual.
    • Click ok
  • Use an Anti Virus Software - It's very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
Computer Safety On line - LIST of free Anti virus programs
  • Use a Firewall - I cannot stress enough how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this webpage out.
    See here to choose one.
  • Site Advisor This is a utility that can be downloaded and installed. It loads an icon to the taskbar of your browser (versions for IE and Firefox), indicating the trustworthiness of the site you are on. Green for safe, Red for suspicious. Click on the icon to access details that SiteAdvisor has about the site.
Obviously you have already taken care of some of the issues mentioned, but it is important that you read through them, and address any that you may have missed.

Here's links to a few articles which are well worth reading Finally

NOW is the time you can start to hit back at the people who infected you.
[external image: Posted Image]
Please take the time to go and complain - that forum has a topic for your infection which is Smitfraud…….. (if not, post in the Is your infection not listed here? topic). Please post as a reply, you do not need to register to do so (but you can if you wish). It will also have a list of other places you can go to to register your complaint, depending on the country you are resident in. Please read the topics and complain, it is only with such complaints to government or government agencies that something will get done.

:o OMG I can't believe it! I just got on here and it looks like the problem is back! It was clean just last night. I just did a HijackThis scan and I am certaintly no expert on this subject but it looks like a complete reinfection of the same problem. From this point on I am locking down this computer so that NO ONE but me can access it until this issue is resolved, and then my roomates and I are going to have a little discussion about browsing habits. Below is the HijackThis log. I am so sorry for causing you so much trouble.

Yup, looks like you got yourself re-infected.

Once you've downloaded the tools, disconnect from the internet and don't re-connect until we've got you clean, or to download any other tools that may be required.

If you've kept any of the tools below. Get rid of the old Smitfaudfix and download the new version. AVG you'll just need to update to newest definitions. ATF cleaner, just use the one you've got.

First

Run a scan with HJT and when finished check the following items (if found).

O7 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System, DisableRegedit=1
O7 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System, DisableRegedit=1

Now close all open windows and click Fix Checked to remove them.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save it to your Desktop. (Do not run it yet)

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) and extract it to your Desktop. (Do not run it yet)

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware.
  • Install AVG Anti-Spyware.
  • Launch AVG by double-clicking on the icon.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • You will need to update AVG to the latest definition files.
  • At the top of the main screen click Update.
  • Then in the Manual Update section, click on Start Update.
[*]The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.

[*]When updates are completed, close AVG.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update AVG.
