Being a bit stubborn this one, seems I missed something last time and it's replaced some of the files we need to get rid of.

We need to clean out your Java cache.
  • Click Start > Control Panel > double-click on the Java Icon (coffee cup) in the Control Panel.
  • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files… button.
  • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 ticked
    • Downloaded Applets
    • Downloaded Applications
    • Other Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
Next we need to clean out your Quarantine files in Norton.
  • Start Norton AntiVirus.
    • If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton System Works or Norton Internet
      Security
, then start that program and click Norton AntiVirus.
  • In the left pane, click Reports.
  • Click View Quarantined Items.
  • In the right pane, select the files that you want to remove.
    • To select everything in Quarantine, click the first item in the list, and then press Shift+End.
  • Click Delete Item.
  • When prompted "Warning! Are you sure that you want to remove this item from Quarantine," click Yes.
  • Close the Quarantine window, and then exit Norton AntiVirus.
Then

Run a scan with HJT and when finished check the following items (if found).

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\hrum455.txt

Now close all open windows and click Fix Checked to remove them.
  • Double click OTMoveIt.exe to launch it.
  • Copy/Paste the contents of the box below into the left hand pane of OTMoveIt.

C:\WINDOWS\bdaecsc.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hrum455.txt
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\vtr455.dll

  • Click the Move It button.
  • The list will be processed and the results will appear in the right hand pane.
  • If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
  • When finished click Exit to exit the programme.
  • A log C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log will be created (where mmddyyyy_hhmmss are numbers giving date and time the log was created).
  • Post the log back here please.
  • Click Start > Run and type cleanmgr then click OK.
  • This will bring up the Disk Cleanup window.
  • Check the following entries.
    • Temporary Internet Files.
    • Recycle Bin.
    • Temporary Files.
  • Click OK.
  • When a prompt pops up click Yes.
Run another scan with Kaspersky and send me the log please.

Run a new HJT scan and send me the log please.

Summary of the logs I need from you in your next post:
  • OTMoveIt log
  • New Kaspersky log
  • New HJT log

Please post each log separately to prevent them being cut off by the forum post size limiter.
I can't seem to find the Java icon in Control Panel. There is one called Java Plug-In but when I open it there is no General tab. Any ideas?
OK, in that case.

Make sure that you can see hidden files and folders. (or you won't be able to see the Application Data folder).
  • Click Start.
  • Click My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Uncheck Hide protected operating system files a pop up will appear, answer Yes
  • Click OK.
Now delete the contents of this folder (in bold) Do not delete the folder.

C:\Documents and Settings\Christopher Combs\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar
Ok, I cleared out the Jar folder under Java and deleted the quarantine files from Norton AV. However, once again I could not remove the hrum455.txt file using HijackThis. I got the same error as before. Not sure if this is significant or not, just thought I would let you know before we proceed. Thank you for your patience.
OK, don't know why HJT is reacting that way, lets use a different method to remove the registry entry. Don't worry about me losing patience, that's not about to happen, I'll stick with this until we get things right.

First we need to create a System Restore Point
  • Click Start > Run
  • Copy/Paste C:\Windows\System32\Restore\rstrui.exe into the Open: box.
  • Click OK.
  • This will open the System Restore window.
  • Click on Create a Restore Point then click Next.
  • Enter Restore from Reg Changes to the description box, then click Create.
  • A new Restore Point will be created, click Close to exit.
Next
  • Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
  • This will open an empty Notepad file.
  • Copy/Paste the contents of the box below into Notepad.
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows]
"AppInit_DLLs"=-
  • Click Format and ensure Wordwrap is unchecked.
  • Save as RegFix.reg
  • Save as file type All Files or it won't work.
  • Now double click on RegFix.reg to run it.
  • A box will pop up asking you to allow merging with the Registry, please allow.
Now run a new HJT scan please, and send me the log, along with a new Kaspersky log and the OTMoveIt log.
Here are the new log: C:\WINDOWS\bdaecsc.exe moved successfully. File/Folder C:\WINDOWS\system32\hrum455.txt not found. C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\vtr455.dll unregistered successfully. C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\vtr455.dll moved successfully. Created on 08/25/2007 02:40:51

Seems there's something not showing on the logs, as the bdaecsc.exe file is back in your HJT log and a new infection file explore.exe has been added.

No point in removing them at this stage (they'll just return), we need to find out what is installing/re-installing these files.

Download GMER and unzip it to your Desktop. (It will create a folder GMER)

Alternate Download Site
  • Disconnect from the Internet, and close all running programmes.
  • There is a small chance this programme may crash your computer, so save any work you have open.
  • Open the GMER folder, and double click gmer.exe
  • Let the gmer.sys driver load if asked.
  • If it gives you a warning at programme start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan ….. click OK.
  • If no warning:
    • Click Rootkit tab.
    • Ensure that All the boxes to the right of the program are checked except Show All.
    • Click Scan.
  • Once scan is finished click Copy.
    • Click Start > Run then type Notepad.exe then click OK.
    • This will open a Notepad file.
    • Hit Ctrl+V to paste log into it.
    • Save the log to your Desktop.
  • Reconnect to internet and post the log please.
Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. (Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges).
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Copy/Paste the contents of main.txt and extra.txt into your next post please.
Please post each log separately.
Okay, here are the new logs. Interestingly, when I log into my account now I get a notification that bdaecsc.exe could not be found.

I really think it would be wise for you to uninstall Norton then re-install it. There have been some registry keys altered relating to it, and there may be other alterations we're not aware of.

Now can you run another scan with Deckards System Scanner (dss.exe) and send me the two new logs from that please.
