I'm totally clueless as to how to do this. A friend of mine sent me the link to someone else's post on here about a similar problem. I am being inundated with pop-ups. Many of them are from anti-malware programs (SystemDoctor, etc) while some are for dating or gaming sites. It keeps redirecting my computer and I'm not sure what to do. In the other entry (http://forums.tomcoyote.org/Winantiviruspro_Systemdoctor_Requesting_Vundofix_Hijac_t81814.html&p=391073) it showed a log of her computer. I have no idea how to do this. Can someone please help me so we don't have to go out and buy a whole new computer.
Welcome to the forums candmbennett.

No need to panic and there will be no need to buy a new computer. But we do need a HijackThis log to take a look at. Read through the information in this link. It will tell you how to download HJT and post a log. It also has other information about how to do things here. Please read through the whole thing then go ahead and download, run, and post your HJT log here. Please do not start a new topic but reply here.

Thank you so much for your reply. I think I did this right. Here is my log. I've had a terrible time with my computer tonight. I've gotten so many pop-ups that it keeps saying Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. Now I've lost the status bar at the bottom to show me the progress of opening pages. Please help!!!

I can definitely see some of the infections but I need you to do the following:

I need you to rename Hijackthis because I suspect that you may have the Vundo infection that can hide some entries in your log.
  • Please go to the folder where you saved Hijackthis.exe:
  • Right-click on it, then select Rename.
  • Name it something like: FindVundo.exe (or whatever you want)
  • Then double-click the renamed HJT to scan and then post the new logfile.
—————————————————————————

Please download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Double click on SDFix.exe. It should automatically extract a folder called SDFix to your system drive (usually C:\). Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the SDFix folder and double click on RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y and press Enter to begin the script.
  • It will start cleaning your PC and then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any key to restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer than normal to restart as the fixtool will be removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished.
  • Press any key to end the script and to load your desktop icons.
  • A text file should automatically open, so please copy the contents and post them here.
So I need the SDFix log and a new HJT log from the renamed HJT.
Ok, hopefully I renamed it correctly and here's the new HJT log. I'm going to disconnect and try the SDFix and get back on.

Ok, hopefully I renamed it correctly and here's the new HJT log. I'm going to disconnect and try the SDFix and get back on.

Yes, great job so far. Vundo is definitely there.

Please download
VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click Yes
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from Click the Scan for Vundo button when VundoFix appears at reboot.
Question first– I'm having trouble getting into my account in safe mode. I can get the option to come up to run windows in safe mode, hit enter and get the screen where I choose my account. However then I only get a black screen. A small pop-up comes up saying something with yes/no options but it literally only lasts about 1 sec. Then it's just the black screen. Can I run SDFix in regular mode? Should I do this VundoFix first?

* Now click on the 'Save as Text' button:
* Save the file to your desktop.
Please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.
Ok, I did step 1. However I don't know if I messed something up. A message came up that it would remove/repair those files. Well, when I went to step 2 (OTMoveIt) there is no C:\WINDOWS\poolsv.exe. I'm not sure what to do there. Here's my latest HJT log. I started to update Java but it will take about 30 minutes (I only have dial-up) so I think I'll wait and do that tomorrow. I'll check back in probably tomorrow afternoon.

You're doing fine. I believe that file was deleted by SDFix but just wanted to make sure because the registry entry still showed in HJT. Didn't realize you were only on dial-up. Thought you had Verizon DSL. The Kaspersky scan could take a long time too. If you don't have time at least update your AV and run a full system scan letting me know what it finds. Things must be running at least a little better. No?
No, only dial-up. We were told something like there's not enough copper in the telephone wires in our town to support DSL. It stinks. I'm downloading java now and will try to do Kaspersky tonight and post the report. Things are better in the sense that the screen isn't fading off as much but still getting a LOT of pop-ups.
