Desktop PC running MS Windows XP-Professional and with wireless Logitech mouse appears infected as follows. Any help you may be able to provide will be much appreciated. I am including my Hijackthis log below. Have Norton Antivirus/Systemworks (2007) and XoftSpySE and RegCure installed. Desktop background has been hijacked with blood-red colored image of three animal skulls/antlers with heading "YOUR PRIVACY IS IN DANGER (Download Privacy Protection Software Now). It appears that family member clicked something and three desktop shortcuts ("Error Cleaner", "Privacy Protector", and "Spyware & Malware Protection") were added to desktop. Also, random pop-up alerts ("SpywareAlert - Security Warning!…..Click to Remove Yes No; TROJAN.W32.LOOKSKY WARNING; Sysem Alert ….. Please Use Recommended Anti-Spyware Software to Protect….."). Also, random hijacking of current page to safewebnavigate.com/index.php?sid=……; mediasportal.com/phandler.php?sid=…….). Thank you for considering offering any help.

Hello David O and welcome to the TomCoyote Forums

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your problem.

First you have a Wareout infection. This is not causing your screen to be red but it is directing your searches through the Ukraine.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
Please post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log.

Hi Trevuren - thank you so much for helping me. I have followed your instructions and downloaded FixWareout. I rebooted and had no problem with internet connection. Following is the report.txt resulting from running FixWareout, and a new HiJackthis log. Thanks for your help and I look forward to your next analysis. David O

Before I forget, you do not need to post or quote my replies to you before answering my posts. All I have to do is look at my screen and all the correspondence between us is there for me to review if need be. Thanks.

A. For your internet problems, please try the following:

Please go to Start -> Control Panel, and choose Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection or Dial-up Connection if you are using Dial-up, and left click on properties. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio button that says Obtain DNS servers automatically. Click OK twice, and restart your computer.

B. After restarting your computer,

Please provide a list of uninstallable programs.

To Provide a List of Installed Programs
  • Run HijackThis.
  • Click Config>>Miscellaneous Tools>>Open Uninstall Manager>>Save List
  • Save list to Desktop
  • Copy the Notepad list and Paste it into this thread.

C. Now, run HijackThis and place a checkmark beside all the 018 entries like this:

O18 - Protocol: bw30s - {C11F7A20-6F31-484B-8F8D-076C775A1A31} - C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\BWPlugProtocol-8876480.dll

Now please close all browsers and windows except for the HijackThis window and click "Fix checked" and EXIT the program.

D. Finally, Please download this file - combofix.exe by sUBs
  • You must download it to your Desktop
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log.

B. Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
  • First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:
    • Go to start>control panel>folder options>view
    • Choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
    • Uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
    • Close the window with ok
  • Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar =
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
    • Press Enter.
  • Using Windows Explorer (Windows Key + E), locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if still present):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\kdhil.exe<==File

  • Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now.

Please also tell me how your system is running.

Regards,

Trevuren
Hi Trevuren - hope you've had a good day.

Got your latest message - thanks.

I removed the programs (Java) you recommended

I went into Folder Options - View and checked show hidden files …. and unchecked the two items you recommended

I ran HJT - scan and checked the R1, RO, and 09 items you recommended and did Fix Checked

I tried to reboot computer in Safe Mode (using F8 after Bios); I was successful in selecting "Safe Mode" but when I hit Enter to select Safe Mode the next screen scrolled with a large number of lines each showing the basic text below with a different driver extension (and it didn't go anyware from there).

"Multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS\System32\Drivers……."

So I could never get into Safe Mode through which you requested I find C:\WINDOWS\System32\kdhil.exe<==File

Following is the latest HJT log for your reference.

P.S. Also, while I was looking in my C: drive, I came across blue-highlighted folders (which I assume are visible because I selected the "show hidden files….." previously. I have not yet gone back to undo the original instructions relating to show hidden files and uncheck "hide …" stuff. Is this correct?

Thanks again for all your help Trevuren.
In general, my computer is no longer being redirected to websites. The reboot has been a little slow during the preceding operations, but I would expect that. Also, the desktop background (photo) shows up as the system is loading but ultimately is replaced by a white screen (with icons). Otherwise, system seems generally functional.
Inasmuch as we already have ComboFix on your machine, let's use it. Here is the game plan.
  • Delete the file
  • Attempt to fix Safe Mode
  • Attempt to repair Desktop
1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.
2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\kdhil.exe

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

[external image: Posted Image]

5. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply:
  • Combofix.txt
  • A new HijackThis log.

I'll let you know if I am successful Still no desktop background (still all white) (although I haven't rebooted yet at the time I'm writing this) Regards
Hi Trevuren - just wanted you to know that after reboot, still got "Multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)……" text lines while trying to get in under Safe Mode. Tried Safe Mode with Prompt, but it wouldn't let me in either (although I must admit I haven't used prompt language for a long time and I may not know what I'm doing). Also, after reboot, still no desktop background (just white). Thanks for all your help on this. Regards.
David, that funny text is Normal, I also have that on my screen when I boot into Safe Mode. It eventually disappears and then I get a choice. If I understand you properly, you also get a few options when the funny writing stops scrolling. Correct?

What options do you get? Are any of them accessible?

For your desktop, please try the following:

If you're left with a white screen, move your mouse to the top right corner, where
the X button usually is and one should appear (kind of in a "hidden taskbar" sort
of manner) Click it and the white screen goes away

Pleas get back to me with the answers/results.

Trevuren
Hi Trevuren - Yes, I was able to x out of the white screen. Thanks. I guess I didn't wait long enough on the safe mode restart. I waited about 10 minutes and the funny text didn't go away and I didn't see any options, but I'll try it again and wait until I get something. I'll let you know which options I get. Thanks
