Hi,

I have a log posted for desktop already. This is an additional posting for my notebook using Windows XP SP2.
I ran a Panda Scan and it has noted virtumonde. I had the virtumonde on notebook last summer & it was cleaned up. Not sure if this is a false reading or not or if I have some clean up to do.

Thanks for help – Denise

Hello denisemn,

Not looking at any Vundo on your log, believe me if you were infected with it you would know it. Are you experiencing any pop ups or browser redirects??

C:\Hi Jack this\HijackThis.exe <–Go here and right click on the HJT Icon, (looks like a red stick of dynamite with a plunger) and rename it to Scanner.exe. <– Don't forget the .exe and post a new log.
Hi Ken,

No pop ups or redirects, but slow. Even when I go directly thru cable modem, rather than wireless, actions are slow, such as openeing IE or other programs. Here is the new HJT log. Thanks a bundle

Hello denise, :D

The reason I had you rename HJT is because the thieves that created the Vundo trojan have written it to evade a HJT scan and by renaming it if you have Vundo on your system if will show up on your log. It did not show up  The rest of your log looks fine.

Panda may be just picking up a cookie or a old reg entry, I don't know,

Do this.

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.
  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
  • Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.

Run the Panda online scan and post the log please
Hi Ken, I ran the CCleaner & new Panda Scan with same results. Panda Scan Incident Status Location Spyware:spyware/virtumonde Not disinfected Windows Registry
denise,

Run this tool and I need to see the report along with a new HJT log please.

Please download ComboFix by sUBs from either of these two locations

BleepingComputerComboFix
TechSupportForumComboFix
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply along with a new HJT log please.
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.
Hi Ken,

The combofix & HJT logs are below: Thanks - Denise

Hi Denise,

You have no Vundo infection, your log is clean, what we are looking at is a stray reg entry.

Download the Registry Search Tool here. You will have to scroll down the page to find it. Unzip it and run it. If your antivirus inteferes you may have to disable script blocking in the antivirus. Put the following in the search box:

virtumonde

Post the results.
Run Spybot Search and Destroy, it should find the stray entry and remove it.

You can use the links in my signature to download and install Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4

If you have the older version 1.3, remove it via the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

  • During Installation, just follow all the defaults.
  • Go to Mode and click on Advanced Mode
  • Then to Updates Search for Updates
  • If you get a Bad Checksum Error, just choose a different download location.
  • Then to Settings/ File Sets and take the checkmark out of Usage Tracks
  • Then to Tools/ Hosts Files click on Add Spybot S&D Hosts Files.
  • Then to Tools/ IE Tweeks and put a checkmark in Lock the Hosts Files
  • Then to Immunize. Up at the top by the GREEN SIGN, click on Immunize.
  • Then to Search and Destroy/ Check for Problems
  • Let it scan your system
  • Then to Fix Problems and fix all it finds.
  • Reboot your computer.

See if this picks it up any entries for Vundo
Hi Ken, I ran Spybot, nothing on virtumonde but it did find in registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\shareddlls\C:\programfiles\sysprotectfree\Pcheck.dll I went ahead and had Spybot delete it then ran another panda scan and it is still there, but have something else. Below is my Panda Scan. ========================================================================= Panda Scan Incident Status Location Spyware:spyware/virtumonde Not disinfected Windows Registry Potentially unwanted tool:Application/NirCmd.A Not disinfected C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.ex =========================================================================
C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.ex <– This is nothing to worry about.

You need to enable windows to show all files and folders, instructions Here

C:\programfiles\sysprotectfree <– Delete this.

Reboot and run this program

Please download SmitfraudFix
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
Hi Ken, I didn't find C:\programfiles\sysprotectfree on computer. Smitfraud found nothing except that your Hosts Files are corrupted.

Download HostsXpert v3.7
  • Unzip HostXpert to your desktop
  • Open up the HostXpert program.
  • Make sure that the "Make Hosts Writable?" button in the upper right corner is enabled.
  • Click Create Back Up
  • Then click on Restore Microsoft's Host Files
  • Close the HostXpert program

Your fine, no Vundo or Smitfraud is present
Hi Ken, On the "Make Hosts Writable?" it doesn't read as enable or disable. I want to make sure I am making correct choice before I proceed. There is a closed lock. Does this mean it is enabled?
