My computer is slow and has endless popups. I have disabled internet explorer and am using Firefox and the popups are avoided. I have run AVG, Spybot, & AdAware SE. I have gotten them to the point where they come up clean. I think this started August 2nd when my wife was looking for people's myspace pages. I have searched for all files created on this date and have been able to delete all but iiffeda.dll in windows/system32. I tried HJT on it and also Unlocker. I found that it's locked by Winlogon.exe and can't get rid of it. Not sure if I'm even going about this the right way? I have posted my HJT log since that seems to be what everybody says to do. Thanks for any help!

Hi

I suggest printing out, or copying to Notepad the following instructions.

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto‑updating for the Viewpoint Manager ‑‑ the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):
  • Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, highlight >>Viewpoint component<< , click Remove.
  • Do the same for each Viewpoint component.

Remove programs from Add/Remove Programs List
Please go to:
  • Start
  • Control Panel
  • Add/Remove Programs
Find and remove these programs (if they are present)
  • NetZero

Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present):
O3 - Toolbar: ZeroBar - {F5735C15-1FB2-41FE-BA12-242757E69DDE} - C:\Program Files\NetZero\Toolbar.dll (file missing)

WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into SAFE MODEBy pressing the F8 key right when Windows starts, usually right after you hear your computer
beep when you reboot it (some versions of windows will display 'Starting Windows' with a grey progress bar)
you will be brought to a menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode.

If it does not work on the first try, reboot and try again, as you have to be quick when you press it.

I have found that during boot up, right after the computer displays the equipment , memory, etc
installed on your computer, if you start lightly tapping the F8 key, the system will usually display the menu.

To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:
  • Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
  • Double-click on the My Computer icon (or click Start, then select My Computer)
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • After the new window appears select the View tab.
  • Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
  • Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.
Navigate to and delete the following files and/or folders (if they are present):

Files:
C:\Program Files\setup.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.1\UWA7P_0001_N91M0809NetInstaller.exe

Folders:
C:\Qoobox
C:\Combofix
C:\Program FilesNetZero

Reboot back into Normal Mode.

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache

*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Note* If you do not have Firefox or Opera, those options will be greyed out.

Finally, post back with a new HJT log and let me know how your computer is behaving now.
OK, good news! I renabled Internet Explorer and no popups. Thank you Mac 70!

On start up, however, the computer is still very slow. Before all of this, it used to load the taskbar, wallpaper and icons all at once and pretty quickly. Now it brings up the taskbar and wallpaper and sits there for about 5 minutes. Then the wallpaper blacks out and comes back at a lesser resolution with all the icons finally loaded. Any ideas?

Here's my HJT log:

I will look into that for you. In the meantime, it looks like I made an error on the Netzero. If, that is your ISP, you may want to reinstall the software.
Netzero isn't my ISP anymore, just remnants that were showing up. Thanks So before this started I had no firewall set up or AV software running. What would be your advice on how to protect my computer or can you give me a good link I can follow? Thanks
Hi

Go to Start > Control Panel > Display Properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop… > Web tab
Uncheck and Delete everything you find in there. (Except for "My Current Home Page.")

Then delete this file: C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\rtemehdoded.html

Let me know if that cures the Desktop problem.

Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present):
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://my.netzero.net/s/signup?r=quick-start
O24 - Desktop Component 0: (no name) - C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\rtemehdoded.html

WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

I would advise updating Adobe Reader, as the latest version clears up any vulnerabilities of previous versions.
First uninstall the version you have on your computer then download and install Adobe Reader 8.1.

Delete the older versions of Java and download the newest.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.
  • Close any programmes you may have running, ESPECIALLY your web browser
  • Click Start > Control Panel.
  • Click Add/Remove Programs.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) (4th one down the list), which is JRE6u2, and click Yes at the page warning, then accept the Licence Agreement before downloading the Offline file.

This is my usual speech for when you are clean, which you appear to be.
  • Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable
and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Set correct settings for files that should be hidden in Windows XP
  • Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
  • Under "Hidden files and folders" if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • If unchecked please checkHide protected operating system files (Recommended)
  • If necessary check "Display content of system folders"
  • If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Click OK
And take a look at this LINKY for further recommendations and tips to stay clean.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Let me know about the Desktop.
