Hi blw1084 and welcome to the forums.
My name is Dave. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can sometimes take a while to research so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Before we start getting you cleaned up. The header on your HJT log got cut off when you posted. It shows the HJT version, and your Windows/IE versions. Next time you post your HJT log can you make sure that gets included. Thanks

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.
Here's what you asked for. I apolgize about not putting the header for HJT. Warning: running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
______________________________

Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.

Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.

[external image: Posted Image]

The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

3.A new HijackThis log

Your may need several replies to post the requested logs, otherwise they might get cut off.
OK. I ran in to a few problems. Some I THINK I figured out. But one big one I haven't When it comes to deleting temp internet files, I coud not find anywhere to get rid of off-line content. I did delete temp files, cookies, and web history. Then I couldn't find anything that said re-set web settings, but I did do reset zone settings. Which I hope was the same On the control panel, and the web pages tab, there were NO pages there. Which may or may not be because I deleted all web history. Lastly…I ran AVG once, left about half way through, came back to discover we had lost power. So I ran it a second time. It found 31 mal-ware. BUT it did not generate a report. And before you ask, yes I did change the settings as you asked. The only one checked is auto generate after every scan. So I don't know what to do, because if I scan again the report will be totally different since I deleted all. I don't know where to go from here.
Hi, Your OK here. It may look a little different because you may be running IE7. That's why it's important to post the HJT log header. It gives us that info. Just post the report from Smitfraud and a new HJT log, also let me know how it's running now.
There isn't so much of a lag now when I open intenet. I have DSL and before it was taking up to 2 minutes just for the internet screen to even pop up.

Here are the 2 logs…

I don't know if you need to know this or not, but I did a log anylzyer for HJT from the most recent log. A few of the things are reported as possibly nasty because the all run in a file starting with c:\programme even though they are all different programs. Also I have something called a Fuzzy Algorithmcheck that it says is nasty. And last I have one that program is the same as the name of the file. I don't know if any of that matters because I know you can't always count on what someone else says, but I thought you should know.
one more thing..I'm sorry… I'm still getting 2 instances of notepad that pop up when I re-boot. All it has on both is [.ShellClassInfo] LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21787 And also an error message that has hpqtra08.exe-unable to locate companent at the top. And the actual message is "this application has failed to start because MFC71.DLL was not found. Re-installing app may fix problem." I don't even know is this is virus related or something totally different. Just thought I'd let you know.
OK, I'll look into the errors you report. When you say:

I'm still getting 2 instances of notepad that pop up when I re-boot.
All it has on both is [.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21787

Do you mean the there is text in the Notepad window that says that?

While I'm doing that please do the following and reply back with the logs.

We are going to use HJT to create a list of your currently installed programs.1. Open HijackThis and click on the Config… button in the "Other stuff" section (lower right hand corner).
2. Click on the Misc Tools button.
3. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager… button.
4. Click on the Save list… button.
5. Save the file uninstall_list.txt to a convinient location. This should open Notepad with the list.
6. Please Copy and Paste the list into your next reply.

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager – the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):
  • Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, highlight >>Viewpoint component<< , click Remove.
  • Do the same for each Viewpoint component.

Still have both notepads that come up and the hpqtra08.exe error…Tried to load up something that uses Java and it still takes forever…
May as well be using dial-up for the way its acting :-)
My bad…I missed one.

Run HijackThis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mav_startupmon] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinAntiVirus Pro 2007\mav_startupmon.exe"

Then close all windows except this one and press Fix checked.

Using Windows Explorer delete the following folder:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinAntiVirus Pro 2007

NOTE: There is also a service running from Panda AV. Did you have Panda AV installed at one time on this machine? I'm not seeing anything other than this service now. There are other items that we can probably disable also (non-malicious) that will help improve performance. But let's take it a step at a time. Let me know how it is now after remove Win AV.

I'm also still researching the error. The hpqtra08.exe file is part of an HP printer. Do you have an HP printer installed?
