Yesterday i installed a new program on my pc, later in the evening i restarted my pc and got a pop up with a countdown saying that my pc would shut down in 15 minutes.
I tried to access my task manager to see what the problem was , but this was to no avail. The task manager would not open neither would regedit or msconfig. I've run adaware 2007 and spybot both in safe mode between them they found plenty of tracking cookies and a few other stuff but no critical problems, hence i still have the countdown issue.

Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated as i am at my wits end.

I've added a hijackthis logfile of my system, Thanks in advance.

Howdy bigsi69,

Welcome to Tom Coyote. Looks like a possible SDBot infection at work here - let's start repairs and check after.

Open HijackThis, and choose None of the above, just start the program. Click Config – Misc Tools – Open process manager. From the list, click each of the following if it is present, and Kill Process. Close HijackThis.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\MSCONFIG.EXE

Then Download SDFix.exe and save it to your desktop.

Close Internet Explorer and all running programs and run a scan in HijackThis. Place a check next to all of the following lines, then select “Fix Checked” and close HijackThis.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [] C:\WINDOWS\system32\MSCONFIG.EXE

Then Make sure you can View Hidden Files. Also uncheck "Hide Extensions for Known File Types"

Do a search ( Start - Search/Find - Files or Folders) for the following hilighted files/folders (shown in Bold), and if found, delete them.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\MSCONFIG.EXE <--- Only in the system32 folder, no other locations

===================================================

Reboot into Safe Mode (at startup tap the F8 key and select Safe Mode).

In Safe Mode, click the SDFix.exe and allow it to extract to it's own folder. Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.

Next type Y to begin the script. Once the fix has run it will prompt you to restart your computer. Press any key to restart at this time. Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.

When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Then open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back here.

===========================================

After the reboot Download ComboFix.exe from here to your desktop, and click the downloaded file to run the repair.

When the command window opens, select 1 (and Enter). Allow the scan to run. When completed a text window will appear - please copy/paste the contents back here. This log can also be found at C:\ComboFix.txt.

A caution - do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop.

Run a new HijackThis, and post that back here along with the SDFix report.txt and the combofix.txt please.

Hi there, Thanks for your help with this matter, you've definately hit the nail on the head with the problem, as soon as i killed the process you suggested the timer disappeared , i ran hijackthis and fix checked like you said and did a search which came up blank, i then went into safe mode and extracted the SDFix.exe , however when i went to double click RunThis.bat i keep getting an error saying "windows cannot find C:\SDFix\RunThis.bat" No matter where i extract the file to i still get the same reply. Any ideas ? It was all going so well.

Might be a hidden process monitoring activities - go ahead with the ComboFix now so we can see what it provides.

I seem to be having a problem starting the combofix.exe , i downloaded the program from where you said and it showed on my desktop as a red circle with a cross in the middle, although when i double click to start the program all it does is open a folder window saying cmd.exe at the top, and nothing else happens. Not having much luck with this am i.

Most often it is an issue with protective software, though I realize I only see Ad-Aware here. I wonder where your antivirus software is? For now try disabling Ad-Aware and any other protective software temporarily to run ComboFix, but either way post back the SDFix log.

I formatted my pc two days ago hoping to eradicate the problem, however after 1 hour the timer was back, i currently have no antivirus software on my pc, so i don't know why the programs aren't running. You asked me to post the sdfix log but as i can't run the program in safe mode i don't know how to post the log. I know - i'm a pain.

Need to be clear about the word choice here. Reformatted - erased all the information on the hard drive and reinstalled a brand new copy of the operating system?

thats it mate, i have a seperate hard drive so i transfered all my important data over to that one and wiped the other. When i reinstalled a clean copy amazingingly after an hour the timer was back. I've just noticed that when i try an open Regedit through the run starter all it does is open a folder window with Regedit.exe at the top exactly the same as when i tried to run the combofix.exe you suggested. The mystery deepens.

My questioning about what you meant by reformat had to do especially with the fact that what is likely an infection startup here remains after the reformat/reinstall, which is not a likely event. But given the steps you have done perhaps that would then only be a reinfection from the return of offloaded data.

Right click Here and select Save Target As (Firefox Save Link As) and save UnHookExec.inf to your Desktop.

Then right-click on UnHookExec.inf and select Install.

Then Open HijackThis again. Click Config - Misc Tools. Then check "List also minor sections (full)" and also check "List empty sections (complete)" and then click on "Generate Startup List Log" Copy the log and post it back in this thread. It will be a large logfile.

Only thing likely is you reinstalled infection after the XP reinstall - perhaps we should be considering the other drive infected as well. Let's check some things.

Open Notepad (Start - Run, type notepad and click OK) and copy the following text into a new file:

cd %windir%
attrib -s -h -r system32\cmd.com
attrib -s -h -r system32\netstat.com
attrib -s -h -r system32\ping.com
attrib -s -h -r system32\regedit.com
attrib -s -h -r system32\taskkill.com
attrib -s -h -r system32\tasklist.com
attrib -s -h -r system32\tracert.com
del system32\cmd.com
del system32\netstat.com
del system32\ping.com
del system32\regedit.com
del system32\taskkill.com
del system32\tasklist.com
del system32\tracert.com
then save this to your desktop as "remove.bat" - be sure to include the "" quotes in the name. Then click on remove.bat.

Then double-click on remove.bat. A window should open and close fairly quickly --- this is normal.

Try running ComboFix after that. If it still won't run just go to the next steps and update me in your next reply.

@ECHO OFF
if exist Regsearch1.txt del /q Regsearch1.txt
regedit /e Regsearch1.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run"
Notepad Regsearch1.txt

Either way next open Notepad again, and copy/paste the above text into the open text box, then save this to your desktop as "runcheck.bat" - be sure to include the "" quotes in the name. Then click on runcheck.bat. When the scan completes a textbox will open - copy/paste those contents back here please.

And last Go to Start > Run and type:

cmd.exe

and ok. Copy and paste the below string after the prompt >

dir /s /a "c:\regedit*.*" > c:\find.txt & start notepad c:\find.txt

Your drive will be scanned and when finished, Notepad will pop up with some information. Copy and paste it in this thread.

I am still unable to open any ".bat" files, this is the exact response i get in a box with red circle with a cross in it "Windows cannot find 'C:\Documents and Settings\bigsi69\Desktop\remove.bat'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the start button, and then click search." When i try and "run\cmd.exe" it still open a folder called "cmd.exe" but theres nothing in it.

So where has everything got to there? We'll need to stay away from the more often used executables to make some progress in this.

Go Here and download Find File Information (Scroll down - click on the download link to the right) and unzip it to it's own folder. Click on FileInfo.vbs. In the window type * (and OK). Then type cmd (and OK). Post back here the text file it creates please. Repeat this using the following:

regedit

The "cmd" results might be a large log, so let me know if we need to go a different route looking into that.
