hello all. first let me thank you for any help you can give me with my problem.

i received a virus/trojan from a friend through msn messenger a few days ago. she always sends me pictures of her travels and i clicked the im she sent me and it all started from there.

i have downloaded everything in the pinned topics in this forum and have followed every direction to the T. im currently using Ad-Aware 2007, AVG 7.5, spybot S&D, STOPzilla and spyware doctor to try and clean/fix the problem. nothing seems to work. i check my progress with trend micros online virus scan and it will seem that i have removed the problem but it comes back. trend micro is showing ADWARE_BHOT_IEHELPER. i have ran all my tools, and as i said ive followed all directions in the pinned topics and nothing seems to do it. it will seem that the problem is fixed and trend micro will show no infections. then 10-20 hours later it all starts again.

the main thing that keeps showing up is my msn messenger will just randomly send im's to all my friends/contacts that are online. ive talked to a few of them on the phone and they say they are getting im's with a generic message like i received from my friend. a message that tells them to look at my summer vacation pictures. after i see the message boxes pop up, my messenger locks up and all i can do is close the program. i dont see any extra cpu useage and no other programs running that dont normaly run.

i would very much like to clean this problem as formating my h/d is a very last resort.

here is my HJT log

Hi allowin,

Your computer appears to have been infected by malware with backdoor functionality. These programs have the ability to steal passwords and other information from your system. If you use your computer for sensitive purposes such as internet banking then I recommend you take the following steps immediately:
  • Use another, uninfected computer to change all your internet passwords, especially ones with financial implications such as banks, paypal, ebay, etc. You should also change the passwords for any other site you use.
  • Call your bank(s), credit card company or any other institution which may be affected and advise them that your login/password or credit card information may have been stolen and ask what steps to take with regard to your account.
  • Consider what other private information could possibly have been taken from your computer and take appropriate steps
This infection can almost certainly be cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it will be impossible to be 100% sure that the machine is clean, if this is unacceptable to you then you should consider reformatting the system partition and reinstalling Windows as this is the only 100% sure answer.

If you wish to reformat then please let me know in your next response, I'll now continue with instructions for cleaning.

Temporarily disable Spyware Doctor
Open Spyware Doctor, click the OnGuard button on the left side, press Click to deactivate OnGuard and OK the prompt
OnGuard will now be deactivated for 15 minutes, either complete the HijackThis instructions within that time or repeat this procedure

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines (if present):

R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\System32\Userinit.exe
O21 - SSODL: printers - {DD0ECAA6-7D65-450E-BF6C-E2454BDBE7EE} - libcintle2.dll (file missing)

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Make hidden/system files and folders visible:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Show hidden files and folders
UNCHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Click Yes to confirm and press OK

Next, reboot your computer in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8
A menu should appear, use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode and press enter

Now click Start-> Search and select All files and folders
Copy this line of text into the file name search box:
libcintle2.dll
Then, under Look in: make sure Local Hard Drives is selected
Then click More advanced options, and ensure Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders and Search subfolders are all checked
Then press Search
When the search is complete, delete all files called libcintle2.dll
Note:If you have trouble deleting this file or it isn't present please let me know in your next response

Now, reboot your computer normally

Please upload a file for scanning:
Open http://virusscan.jotti.org/
Copy/paste this file and path into the white box at the top:

C:\Windows\temp\windowsautomaticupdates.exe

Press Submit - this will submit the file for testing.
Please copy and paste the results in your next response.

Note: If Jotti is busy, you can use VirusTotal instead.

Once complete, please post the Jotti scan results and a new HijackThis log.
Also let me know if you successfully deleted that file, and if you ever installed a program called Folding@Home installed on your computer.

it will be impossible to be 100% sure that the machine is clean, if this is unacceptable to you then you should consider reformatting the system partition and reinstalling Windows as this is the only 100% sure answer.

that almost makes me want to just wipe the drive clean and start over with a fresh install. the last thing i need is for somebody to have access to all my bank information, paypal accounts and the like.

i have taken that computer off my network and i havent wanted to reconnect it and give it access (and give people access to it).

ill follow your instructions and see if i can fix the problem but im thinking the format option (as much as i dont want to) is looking to be the best option.
Hi allowin, Keeping it off the network for now is a good idea, and the most important thing is to change all your passwords immediately from a known good machine - then you can decide what to do without worrying about anything happening with your accounts. The chances of malware remaining or changes to your system being undetected by the time we're finished is small but it is certainly possible, so you should consider this risk in light of what the machine is used for. When you're ready, let me know what you have decided.
