I am a relative Newb. I have in the past used this with LimeWire to get MP3s. I have a couple of questions:

What viruses did the use of limewire put on my computer?
(what other viruses have i picked up along the way?)

Can i still use Limewire and find a way to prevent future viruses?

Bottomline, my computer used to be much faster… (oh, the good ole days) and something is bogging it down.

Please Help me. Thanks so much

Hi shuszczo,

The problem with Limewire and other P2P file sharing networks is twofold:

1) Some file sharing applications (not Limewire) come bundled with malware, resulting in an infection as soon as they are installed
2) File sharing networks (including Limewire) are full of malware files, anything downloaded via P2P can be infected, even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.

There is no way to safely download files if the source cannot be trusted 100%, so you can never use these programs safely. I strongly recommend you remove Limewire and any other P2P file sharing programs for this reason.

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines (if present):

O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyGaming\PartyPoker\RunApp.exe (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyGaming\PartyPoker\RunApp.exe (file missing)
O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} - http://ak.exe.imgfarm.com/images/nocache/f…tup1.0.0.15.cab

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Then please do an online scan with Kaspersky:

Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop
Once complete, please post the Kaspersky log and a new HijackThis log.
It found 1 virus and 6 infected objects… but i dont think it fixed anything…

Hi shuszczo,

Use Windows Explorer to find and delete the following file:
C:\Program Files\iTunes\sinstaller2.exe

The other detections were in System Restore which we'll clean a bit later.

Next, please download F-Secure Blacklight
  • Click I ACCEPT and download the graphical user interface version to your Desktop
  • Double click the file to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
  • It will create the fsbl-xxxxxxx.log on your desktop.
  • The log will have a list of all items found.
  • Do not choose to rename any yet! I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present.
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.
Then download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply
Once complete, please post the Blacklight log and both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.
We've found the viruses, when do we get to destroy them…?

Hi shuszczo,

We've found the viruses, when do we get to destroy them…?

In the next post :) we're nearly done!

First I need to see the DSS extra.txt log that you made.

You should find the original extra.txt located in this folder or a subfolder under it named with the date and time of the scan:
C:\Deckard\System Scanner

If required, you can produce another one as follows:
  • Make sure DSS.exe is on your Desktop
  • Next press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:

    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config

  • A configuration box will appear, click the Check All button then then press Scan!
  • The extra report will be minimized so please look for it's window on the taskbar
Once complete, please post the extra.txt
Deckard's System Scanner v20070729.57
Extra logfile - please post this as an attachment with your post.

Hi shuszczo,

The DSS report shows Norton Internet Security as being outdated. Please update the program and signatures immediately as your computer is at risk until you do. If your subscription has lapsed, either renew it or remove the program and install another antivirus program. There are several free packages available, two of the most popular are here:
AVG Antivirus: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
Antivir: http://www.free-av.com/

Your Java is outdated and is now a security risk
Go to Start » Control Panel » Add/Remove Programs and remove these:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6

(They should have this icon next to it: [external image: Posted Image])
Download and install the newest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) (version 6 update 2), from here:
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using safe and free alternatives such as VLC Player or Media Player Classic.
To remove, open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs find Viewpoint Media Player and select Remove

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up… and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Once complete, please post a new HijackThis log and let me know how your computer is running.
AVG found no viruses on my computer… how can i get rid of that 1 virus that kapersky scanner found??

the computer is running the same. no better but its not bad. is it completely clean??

Hi shuszczo,

Kaspersky found one infected file and also infected System Restore points. I have already posted instructions to clean System Restore and to delete the infected file. You can re-scan if you wish to double-check.

You can now delete dss.exe and fsbl.exe from your Desktop.

We've had a pretty thorough look at your computer and at this stage it looks clean of malware, so I'd say the slowdown has other causes.

I recommend you try using Process Explorer to monitor resources on your system. Run Process Explorer minimized and when a slowdown occurs, switch to the Process Explorer window to see which process is using a high percentage of CPU. Let me know what you find.

Here are some tips to help you keep your computer clean:

Operating system vulnerabilities can easily be exploited by malware so please ensure your operating system is automatically kept up to date by using Windows Update:
Go to Start->Control Panel->Automatic Updates
Select Automatic and select a suitable schedule

You have a good antivirus program installed, however I recommend you also install antispyware software with real-time capabilities - this will protect you from a wider range of malware and also that it will protect you from system changes and spyware while you are working, not just removing malware after it has been installed. There are a range of paid-for and free packages available, a free one I can recommend is Windows Defender, available here:

You should consider installing a Personal Firewall program. Even if you are behind a NAT router, I recommend you use firewall software as it will improve the security of your computer by monitoring and controlling outbound connections to the internet as well as inbound. There are various free packages available, such as Sunbelt Personal Firewall and Zone Alarm:

Spywareblaster is a free program which prevents the download and installation of Internet Explorer ActiveX based malware by immunizing your system against it. You can download Spywareblaster from here and a tutorial to help you get started is available here.

Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.
