Hi,

I had the virtumonde virus on my machine and ran both VundoFix.exe and VirtumundoBeGone.exe to remove it last night. After running both, it looked from the log files that the virus was completely removed.
However, when I started using my machine the next day ads were still popping up.
Below is the Hijackthis log.
Any help in detecting what is causing this ads and the removal would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi amenon23 Welcome to the TomCoyote Forums My name is mschroe919 and I am going to read your log. I would like to help you So if you would…. Please be patient and I will be back as soon as possible. mschroe919
thanks mschroe919. I was looking into the system restore check points and was wondering if that would also be an option to get rid of this spware. I know for a fact that this virus/spyware got into my system yesterday when i was trying to go to a movie download site. my pc-cillin anti-virus software popped up numerous messages at that point and i had to remove some file detected by it manually. but i guess it was too late at that point. Let me know what you think and we will proceed from there.
I don't think as yet you shoul do anything I will get back to you in less than 1 hour. If you use system restore it don't take the bad boys away. So please don't delete anything or change anything till I ask you to. We don't want to compond the problem mchroe919
Hi amenon23,
Well you were righrt you had and still have signs of Vundo on your PC.
We need to run this again:

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.
There will e more to do when we finish this and I see the logs,
Good luck mschroe919
Below is the log. As you can see, no files were found. **************************** Beginning removal… VundoFix V6.5.6 Checking Java version… Java version is 1.4.2.3 Old versions of java are exploitable and should be removed. Scan started at 1:52:23 PM 7/29/2007 Listing files found while scanning…. No infected files were found. ***************************** I noticed that the first Ad that always pops up is one from Netster. I dit a little research and found that its an adware. It was recommended on a site that i rn ScanSpyware to remove this. What do you suggest?
Hi amenon23

I was pretty sure it wouldn't find anything, how ever we need to get rid of the
vundo bugs hanging around.
You may want to print this out as you can follow it.
Let shiow all files:

Windows XP

* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

NEXT:

We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.

Open Windows Defender.

Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

NEXT:

Make sure Internet Explorer isn't open

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click Fix checked
also can you tell me if this is your IP:

[removed], [removed]
If not sure go to google and type in whats my IP and it will come up with yours somewhere.
There will be more to do so be patient and don't try anything else till we get done or ask questions if not sure.

good luck mschroe919
Hi mschroe919,

Followed all the instruction but somehow no report was generated after the long AVG scanning process !!
I was surprised myself after I went to the Reports tab. The scan did detect 57 items out of whcih 5 were "Severe". 1 was a virtumonde, 1 was a .tiny if I remember. I did hot the "recommended aciton" button which deleted everything.
I have no idea why the report was not there even after selecting the proper radio button under Settings.
However, here is the HJT log.

Another thing. Before I followed this last set of Instructions, earlier in the evening my Pc-cillin did pop up again and warned me there was a virus in "C:\System Voume Informaiton\.."
Also I noticed on several posts that an older version of JRE would be vulnerable. I am running 1.4.2_03.
Just wanted to bring both these pieces of info to your attention.

Hi,
Because of the nature of some of the bad boys they hide.
two things to do:
you need HJT in a stand alone file.

Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.

Download HijackThis into this folder.
So I need for you to go to your
C:\Documents and Settings\Anoop\Desktop\Spyware-Virus Help\HijackThis.exe
to look like this:
C:\HJT|hjt.exe
Now once that is done lets go to that folder:
C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe
sometimes a virus or trojan
hide when they see hijackThis.
So here is what we do:
Change the name HijackThis.exe
to scann.exe
Here is what to do in steps:
1-left click on my computer to open
2-left click on local disk (C:)
3-left click on HJT
4-RIGHT CLICK ON HijackThis.exe
5-After right clicking a window opens with some options
6-left click on RENAME
7- a box opens with shaded block, here type in Scann.exe
8-After typing in the name scann.exe please hit the enter button

This is now been changed. If you click on Scann.exe it does the same thing as Hijackthis done.
and run the program again and post a new log.
Again I need a complete log I will be waiting
for you new log to continue.

Your Java needs to be updated.

Update the Java at:
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
Be sure you uninstall all old versions first!

Thanks mschroe919
Hi mschroe919,

Thats some serious midnite oil you are burning there ! didn't expect u to post untill later today.

I uninstalled the old JRE and installed in the new one in that order.
Also below is the new HJT log ran from C:\HJT

Hi amenon23
Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows and browsers, other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.
Close Hijackthis.
Reboot and:
NEXT:
Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):
MyWay Search Assistant
NEXT:
go to below and dlete the file in RED
C:\Program Files\MyWaySA \SrchAsDe\1.bin\deSrcAs.dll
My Way Search Assistant is not required for your system to run.

Dell said there was nothing untoward about My Way Search Assistant, despite complaints from customers that the toolbar impairs computer performance, changes browser settings and is difficult to remove. However anti-spyware firm Sunbelt Software defines My Way components as a ‘potential privacy risk’ that pose a moderate threat to users

Notice myway may not let you remove, in that case we will try something different.
After doing the above reboot
Next:

Please download System Security Suite.
when you get to the site, would pay for you to read all the stuff there.

Extract it from the zip file into a folder.

Get it here:
http://www.igorshpak.net/

Run 3S under “Items To Clear” tab place a checkmark in all of them but the last.
NEXT:

Reboot and Rescan with HJT and post a new log here.

Also please describe how your computer behaves now.
good luck mschroe919
Hi mschroe919,

Below is the new HJT log after following all the instructions.

I wasn't able to remove "My Way Search Assitant" from the "Add/Remove Programs" list as it kept saying "Error: couldn't find C:/program files/Myway/…."
I guess it was looking for the dll we just removed.

The computer has been behaving as normal now. It used to be slow before I ran VundoFix and VirtumundoBeGone.exe . But now its back to normal speed.
Also I haven't had any pops-ups and ads for the last 2 days now !!!

However I still got a couple of messages from Pc-cillin yesterday saying it denied access to a virus/trojan in C:/system volume informaiton/
Here is the log file from that :

"Virus Scan","2007/07/30","SAM"
"Time","Event","Source Type","Virus Name","File Name","First Action","Second Action"
"20:49","Real-time Protection","File","TROJ_PURITYSC.AX","C:\System Volume Information\_restore{46DE8921-1D39-44D2-A9E9-64119261F211}\RP733\A0072702.exe","Quarantine Success",""

I guess I will have to remove all system restore points after we are done huh !

Use an Anti Virus Software
It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See these links for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
If you don't have one here are some of the better AV products.

Symantec/Norton Antivirus: http://www.symantec.com/nav/nav_9xnt/
Kapersky AV: http://www.kaspersky.com/buyonline.html?info=25
Nod32 : http://www.nod32.com/home/home.htm
Panda AV: http://www.pandasoftware.com/
McAfee Virusscan: http://us.mcafee.com/root/package.asp?pkgid=100
AVG Anti-Virus (Free version available) http://www.grisoft.com/

Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
============================================================
NEXT:

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
If you don't have one see link below for a free firewall:

ZoneAlarm:

Sunbelt Kerio:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial43.html
=========================================================================

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial48.html

====================================================================

Install SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
========================================================================

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
Happy surfing the net

===========================================================
Al;so be sure to enable your spy tools we disabled

Good luck Mschroe919
