Hi raziael,

Please print/save a copy of these instructions because we will be using Safe Mode, during which time you won't have access to the internet.

First press Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, find DriveCleaner Free and remove it.

Now open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines (if present):

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E26CEADA-67B0-4543-BE8B-307F00265118} - C:\Program Files\Video ActiveX Access\iesplg.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Salestart] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\DriveCleaner Free\dcsm.exe"

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Next, reboot your computer in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8
A menu should appear, use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode and press enter

Then use Windows Explorer to find and delete these folders:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\DriveCleaner Free
C:\Program Files\Video ActiveX Access

If you have any trouble deleting these folders please let me know.
Then reboot your computer normally

Next download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C: ), and launch from there.

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user. Further info is available here.

Once complete, please post the SmitfraudFix report and a new HijackThis log.
Thanks much _silver_

Hi raziael,

Please print/save a copy of these instructions because we will be using Safe Mode, during which time you won't have access to the internet.

First, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Once complete, please post the new SmitfraudFix report and a new HijackThis log.

Hi raziael,

That's looking a bit better!

Your Java is outdated and is now a security risk
Go to Start » Control Panel » Add/Remove Programs
Search all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment…. )
(They should have this icon next to it: [external image: Posted Image])
Remove all versions of Java.
Download and install the newest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) (version 6 update 2), from here:
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky:

Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky log and a new HijackThis log.
Hello _silver_ I've attempted to install the active x required by Kespersky Online Scanner seveal times without luck - I keep getting stuck in a loop of 'approving the install' and being sent to a html page with info about the program and not active x install. SO… can't run Kaspersky for some reason… :(
OK please do a scan with Dr Web instead:

Download Dr.WEB CureIt to your desktop from here:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/cureit.exe
  • Double-click cureit.exe to start the program.
  • Press Start and then OK to start the Express scan
  • The Express scan takes just a few moments to finish, if something is found, click Yes to cure it
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options->Change settings
  • Choose the Scan tab and remove the check mark from Heuristic analysis
  • Choose the Actions tab and next to Infected objects select Move, then press OK to close the settings box.
  • Select all hard drives to be scanned by clicking on them - choose all drives - a red dot confirms they will be scanned
  • Click the green arrow on the right to start the scan
  • Click Yes to all if it asks if you want to move a file
  • Click File-> Save report list and save the report to your desktop
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit and reboot your computer (this is important as files may be moved/deleted during reboot)
Once complete, please post the Dr Web log and a new HijackThis log.

You are awesome… :)

peace,

Hi raziael, It looks like Dr Web found a lot, but actually it was just parts of the SmitfraudFix tool and old, infected restore points which we'll clean up so it's fine. How is your machine running now?
Hello _silver_, Very sorry for the delay in getting back to you. The computer seems to be running better. As it is not my system, but one I am helping a friend with, I cannot say for sure it is running 'as it should' be, however, it's running much better than it was when it was handed to me… :) peace, tj
Hi raziael,

Good to hear the performance has improved and I think the machine is now clean :)

Some important final steps:

Please delete SmitfraudFix.exe and cureit.exe from your Desktop along with the SmitfraudFix desktop folder.

Also delete these folders:
C:\SmitfraudFix
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\DoctorWeb\Quarantine <- Where USERNAME is the username you used to run Dr Web

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up… and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Some tips to help you keep this system clean:

Operating system vulnerabilities can easily be exploited by malware so please ensure your operating system is automatically kept up to date by using Windows Update:
Go to Start->Control Panel->Automatic Updates
Select Automatic and select a suitable schedule

You have plenty of protection software installed however please ensure it is kept up to date. Check that your antivirus and antispyware programs are set to automatically update themselves daily, and that your firewall is the latest version.

Spywareblaster is a free program which prevents the download and installation of Internet Explorer ActiveX based malware by immunizing your system against it. You can download Spywareblaster from here and a tutorial to help you get started is available here.

Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Please post back to let me know that you have read this, and if there are any further issues.
Hello _silver_ Thank you so very much for the help, and for the input for continued security. The service provided here is wonderful, and the fact that you guys offer this help for fee is absolutely fantastic. Take care - and keep up the good work! peace tj
I may have spoke too soon… the computer seems to be running very sluggish - especially whenopening and usingIE7 – and for some reason LAN connection won't work anymore - I had to enable the wireless and connect that way…. tj
Hi raziael,

Have you made any changes such as installing software or hardware since it was working fine? If so, please post all the details.

Please visit Windows Update and check that you have all the latest updates.

Once complete, please post another HijackThis log for review.
