My Windows XP often plays what sounds like a radio station in the background for about 5-6 minutes. According to my Spybot, it frequently tries to connect websites that it blocks, one being k8L. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Jwburr,

You appear to have no antivirus software running. Without antivirus software your computer is very vulnerable and can easily be infected at any time so it it is essential you have one active at all times.

There are several free packages available, two of the most popular are here:
AVG Antivirus: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
Antivir: http://www.free-av.com/

If you have no antivirus program then download and install one immediately, update the definitions and set it to update automatically. Then do a full system scan and quarantine/delete anything it finds, and make a note of where the logfile is stored so you can post a copy in your next response.

You have a program called explorer.exe running from your Desktop, do you know what this is?

Please upload a couple of files for scanning:
Open http://virusscan.jotti.org/
Copy/paste this file and path into the white box at the top:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\HPAware.exe

Press Submit - this will submit the file for testing.
Please copy and paste the results in your next response.
Repeat the process for this file also:

C:\Documents and Settings\John Burr\Desktop\explorer.exe

Once complete, please post the antivirus scan results, Jotti scan results for both files and a new HijackThis log.
Thanks for the reply.

In terms of antivirus software, I'm running "Spy Sweeper with Antivirus." Is this antivirus software?

The explorer.exe off my desktop:

Sometimes when the "radio station" would play in the background, I would be able to fix the problem by CTRL+ALT+DELETE and ending the explorer.exe process. In order to restart the explorer, I would "download" it through Firefox to the desktop and run it from there. I would delete explorer.exe off the desktop after a reboot. Should I run a Jotti on the original explorer.exe (in c:/windows)?

Jotti results for HPAware.exe:

Hi Jwburr,

As long as you 'downloaded' explorer.exe from your C:\Windows directory then it's fine, no need to scan it.

Spy Sweeper with antivirus is just fine as an antivirus program

The malware on your system has been reported to be a password-stealing trojan. These programs have the ability to steal passwords and other information from your system. If you use your computer for sensitive purposes such as internet banking then I recommend you take the following steps immediately:
  • Use another, uninfected computer to change all your internet passwords, especially ones with financial implications such as banks, paypal, ebay, etc. You should also change the passwords for any other site you use.
  • Call your bank(s), credit card company or any other institution which may be affected and advise them that your login/password or credit card information may have been stolen and ask what steps to take with regard to your account.
  • Consider what other private information could possibly have been taken from your computer and take appropriate steps

Hi Jwburr,

Please close all Internet Explorer windows (save a copy of these instructions if necessary)
Click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Use Windows Explorer to find and delete the following files (if present):
C:\WINDOWS\system32\HPI4.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\John Burr\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\LIKOPAI7\n404-2[1].htm
C:\Documents and Settings\John Burr\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\LIKOPAI7\n404-1[1].htm

Your Java is outdated and is now a security risk
Go to Start » Control Panel » Add/Remove Programs
Search all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment…. )
(They should have this icon next to it: [external image: Posted Image])
Remove all versions of Java.
Download and install the newest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) (version 6 update 2), from here:
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

You have Azureus, a P2P file sharing program installed on your computer. This program does not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but P2P file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I recommend you remove it, but of course the choice is yours.
You can remove Azureus via Add/Remove Programs.

Once complete, please post a new HijackThis log and let me know how your computer is running.
I was unable to locate the Content.IE5 folder in Temporary Internet Files under John Burr; however, I can find Content.IE5 under Default User. Under Default User, there is no LIKOPAI7 folder. (Hidden files are showing too.) Any ideas?

I did do a system cleanup, delete HPI4.dll, and remove/reinstall java as you told me too, however, Spy Sweeper still alerts me that my computer tries to connect to unwanted websites (one being K8L.INFO). I am also alerted that Spy Sweeper blocks installation for harmful programs (BHO is what I am told).

Here's the hijackthis log.

Any help appreciated, thanks.
Hi Jwburr,

I was unable to locate the Content.IE5 folder

I'm sorry you had trouble with that, folder is probably there but it's just not visible through normal browsing with Explorer.

If you open Windows Explorer and copy/paste this into the address bar it should work:

C:\Documents and Settings\John Burr\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\LIKOPAI7

The bad files may well have been deleted by cleanmgr so if you find the folder but not the files that's OK.

Please post the Spy Sweeper log so I can see the full details of what it is detecting:

Open Spy Sweeper, select Options then View Session Log. Please export/save the whole log file and post it, or copy/paste the details of the recent infections and post those.

Also run a scan with Blacklight:

Download F-Secure Blacklight
  • Click I ACCEPT and download the graphical user interface version to your Desktop
  • Double click the file to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
  • It will create the fsbl-xxxxxxx.log on your desktop.
  • The log will have a list of all items found.
  • Do not choose to rename any yet! I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present.
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.
Once complete, please post the Spy Sweeper detection log, the Blacklight log and a new HijackThis log.
Thanks silver. I booted under Linux and was able to locate Content.IE5, however the files were not in the folder. I guess they were already removed. In terms of the log, should I post the entire file? (It's really long). Hi Jwburr,

however the files were not in the folder. I guess they were already removed.

If the Spy Sweeper log shows examples of the all the detections you are seeing then that's fine.

11:33 AM: BHO Shield: found: ssv.dll– BHO installation denied at user request
11:32 AM: BHO Shield: found: ssv.dll– BHO installation denied at user request

This looks like the Java toolbar trying to be installed, not malware-related but it might be unwanted. If you wish you could confirm this by uninstalling Java again to see if the detection stops.

12:12 PM: Tamper Detection
Operation: Registry Access
Target: \SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\Root\LEGACY_SSHRMD00\LogConf\BootConfigVector
Source: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SERVICES.EXE
12:12 PM: Tamper Detection

This is a legitimate Windows program accessing a Spy Sweeper service registry entry so it appears OK, however is this detection a normal/regular event or something which has only happened recently?

11:45 AM: The Internet Communication shield has blocked access to: K8L.INFO

How often does this detection occur? Does it only occur when you are using a web-browser or has it happened without a browser open?

If this detection only occurs when a web browser is open - the next time the detection occurs, please copy/paste all urls you have open at that time to a notepad file. Then, close all browser windows and reopen each page one at a time and see if/when the detection recurs. I'd like to see if we can find a way to reproduce the detection on demand.

Please let me know the answers to the above and results along with any other info you think might be relevant. Also, let me know if your original 'radio station' symptoms are still occurring or not.

As I recall, the internet browser does not have to be open; however, I haven't taken note. I'll make sure to do so next time it happens (it hasn't happened this session yet :) ).

Also, let me know if your original 'radio station' symptoms are still occurring or not.

I am at work right now and therefore my volume is off. There is still a problem that occurs, though not very often–It just happened…my desktop background changes to a website (I recall once it changed to Ebay). Right now it is currently "http://www.form-a-corp.com/". There is also a dark outline around my desktop icons. Any ideas?

Thanks.
Hi Jwburr,

Right-click your Desktop, select Properties, select the Desktop tab, click Customize Desktop and select the Web tab.
This settings dialog has options relating to web content on your Desktop.
Any web pages set to be your Desktop background should be here.
Uncheck all that are listed, and you may delete some or all of them if you wish.
Also, uncheck Lock desktop items
Let me know if this resolves the desktop issues.

Please do note what is happening with the 'k8l.info' detections so we can isolate the problem.

Now open HijackThis, select Open the Misc Tools section
Next to the Generate StartupList log button, place a checkmark in the box labelled list also minor sections (full)
Then press the Generate StartupList log button and say Yes to the prompt
Save the StartupList log to your deskop and include a copy in your next response.
Now press Back and Scan and then Save log to create and save a new HijackThis log.

Once complete, please post the startuplist log and a new HijackThis log. Also, let me know if the Desktop background issue is resolved, and any information concerning the 'k8l.info' detections.
The desktop issue does seemed fixed. Thanks very much.

k8L.info:

The only browser window I had opened was this forum post! It was actually the only thing that I had opened at all since the computer startup. The computer had only been on for about 5 minutes.

Hi Jwburr,

At this stage it looks like your machine is clean of malware. I'm still suspicious of the k8l.info detections, however they do not necessarily indicate infection, they could have a number of causes and I'll help you try to narrow it down:

While it's very likely that a browser is making the connection attempt to k8l.info, there's no information in the Spy Sweeper log to confirm that so we need to check which application or process is involved. To do this, we can use a tool called TCPView which you can download from here:
http://download.sysinternals.com/Files/TcpView.zip

Unzip and double-click tcpview.exe to start the program.
You will see a list of processes (like Task Manager) and connection information.
Leave TCPView running in the background, and keep an eye on which applications/processes connect to the internet
When you get a detection, save the TCPView window by selecting File->Save As… or clicking the save button - hopefully this will show the process which is trying to connect to k8l.info.

When you have some results please post them and let me know how you got on.
silver: Thank you so much for your help over the past week or so. I can't be more grateful. Since the k8l problem is just minor, I am content with not worrying about it further. I did do what you say, but I have not been able to devote much time in front of my computer over the last few days due to an upcoming trip and therefore have been unable to catch the nuisance when it occurs. Again thank you very much for your help with cleaning my computer. Regards, John
