Hello and welcome to the forums

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

Note:
(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Next:

Download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware from here and install it. When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, AVG Anti-Spyware will open.

If the program does not automatically update itself during installation, or you are unsure whether it has done so, please do the following:
  • Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
  • The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
  • It is essential that you get the update - keep trying until successful. (Note: If you have problems getting the update, you can download an installer for the full database from here (save it on your desktop). Once you have downloaded the installer, make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed and then double-click on avgas-signatures-full-current.exe to install the database).
Please set up the program as follows:
  • Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is… click active. This should now
    change to inactive.
  • Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
  • Under How to act? - make sure that Quarantine is selected.
  • Under How to scan? - All checkboxes should be ticked.
  • Under Possibly unwanted software - All checkboxes should be ticked.
  • Under Reports - Select Do not automatically generate reports.
  • Under What to scan? - Select Scan every file.
Close all open windows.
Do not run a scan yet.

Reboot your computer into SafeMode
You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears.
Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or
programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:

  • Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab
then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little
    time.
  • Let the program scan your computer.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
    • Important: Click on the Apply all Actions button (*** This must done before saving the report ***)
    • When the program has finished, it will display the message All actions have been applied.
    • Then click the Save Scan Report button.
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
    • Right-click the AVG Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
    • Reboot in normal mode and copy the report back to this topic along with a new HijackThis log.

I am concerned about the computer's slow responses, sometimes it crashes when I open Yahoo News, I also had that SmitFraud-C thing that Spybot found but said it fixed (not sure if there are remnants) and also the fact that my computer always says that System Restore was unsuccessful. Not sure why I cant restore and I am concerned that if I need this feature in the future, I wont have it available to me.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

With AVG Anti-Spyware, if you click on the Infections icon, then it will show you all the items in Quarrantine and you can remove them that way. Just click Select All then Remove Finally

Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you, combofix.txt. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall
OK, here's the combfix.txt report

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
OK, now I'm sort of scared. When I rebooted I got a blue screen w/ white writing that said ALOT and then went away so I dont really know all of it….something like "..check file on K.." …"type of file FAT 32…" …"one of the discs should be checked for consistency…." Then a WHOLE lot more.

I did what you said although the last one 023-Service….wasnt there. Also, I didnt know what you meant by delete those c:\Windows files…I didnt see it popup anywhere so nothing happened with that.

I emptied the recycle bin. I think my son plays PopUp games so will that keep coming back and is that where Viewpoint came from?? What do those do to the computer?

Here is the HJT.

Thanks

Viewpoint components are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). The software claims to be "required", but I have a hard time understanding why I need yet another media player in order to chat with friends on AIM. The fact that Viewpoint is installed at all, and more importantly, how visible this fact is, is in the hands of these other packages. Personally, I would expect that a) Viewpoint would be optional, and as such B) I would be given a clear choice at setup time for these other software packages. Sadly that is not always the case, and Viewpoint can simply "appear", seemingly without warning.

It's not needeed and gets installed without you even knowning it.

Is your Symantec (Norton's) the free or paid for version?
Hi LDTate…thanks for doing so much work w/ me….

I have the paid version of Norton and automatic updates checked. It runs a scan pretty regularly. The computer alot of times gives an error message w/ something like ccAP..cant be executed…something like that. I think thats part of the norton shared stuff. I think that came up in the past. I dont know why but it just happens occassionally. Not regularly so I dont know what that's about. Do you know what the system restore problem is about? How does this file look and what exactly was wrong w/ my computer to your knowledge. Did I have a virus or anything?

Also, I forgot to mention to you. Since I have been doing this with you, I have been getting more spam in my Outlook Express mail. Dont know if that is a coincidence or not….
As for your System Restore, try this:

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

The spam I would think is just a coincidence. I'm getting hammered with it today as well.
OK, I did that w/ System Restore…it took a long time to turn off. Then restarted and turned it back on and created a restore point. Do you think I am ok now? What was going on? I usually cant tell for sure how slow things are going until I am on it for a little while browsing. Also, when I was on this forum about 2 years ago, someone told me to use CCleaner which I update and use every week or so after my kids have been on the computer. Is this OK?
Yes, CCLeaner should be OK.

I don't know why System Restore wasn't working.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

You log looks good to me
OK, thanks so much for your help….I will write back if there are any more problems. I hope this all worked out… thanks for your time.
