Hope some one can give me some advice. I have had spyware/trojan before, and got rid of it ok by down loading various removers/scanners. A trojan has come back, and brought with it various suprises…The usual extra icons on the main screen. And the wallpaper has gone…can't left click options anymore. did have a warning sign for a while, that when you clicked anywhere on the screen, you'd be taken to a antiadware page advertising a free download etc. I get warnings every couple of mins. And my home page/browser log in went wierd for a bit (like last time).

I have downloaded Spybot…Ad aware…CounterSpy (which did the trick last time, but this time fails me)…and superantispyware, which is good. I have Avast antivirus aswell, and zone alarm firewall.

I have attempted to scan and remove about ten times, each coming up with trojans and spyware things, but not removing them all. When I reboot, the pc loads, then within 1o seconds the items come back, wallpaper changes, and were back to square one.

I rebooted in safe mode, nothing really changed. SUPERantispyware picked up 137 issues, and deleted most of them, but after rebooting again, some came back, so I scanned again, and it found 8 items. Deleted/quarentined them. Still the same… Can anyone help?

My other email address is Email edited by Trev for Security reasons I cannot get on to main emails

I did a HijackThis log scan… here it is. I can't really see anything that stands out. But maybe someone will.

Hi blaze.s8n,

I'm Gary R, I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • Remember, absence of symptoms does not mean the infection is all gone.
If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • Please note you'll need to have Administrator priviledges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
  • Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.
You are currently running HijackThis from a temporary folder here: C:\Documents and Settings\home\Local settings\Temp\Temporary Directory 2 for hijackthis[1].zip\HijackThis.exe

Hijack this needs a permanent folder to store backups in. Please make a folder here: C:/Program Files/HJT and place HijackThis.exe in that folder.

DO NOT follow the steps below until you have moved HijackThis.

Any problem moving it, do the following.

Click here to download HJTsetup.exe, and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the "Select Addition Tasks" dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Close HijackThis. Use this version in all further posts.
OK, now we've got HJT in a permanent folder, lets get down to work.

Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the following (if found).

My Web Search Bar (or anything similarly named).

NEXT

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) and extract it to your Desktop. (Do not run it yet)

Download OTMoveIt by OldTimer to your Desktop.
  • Double click OTMoveIt.exe to launch it.
  • Copy/Paste the contents of the box below into the left hand pane of OTMoveIt.

C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1
c:\windows\system32\pjmgiclnhk.exe
C:\WINDOWS\msddx.dll
C:\WINDOWS\msqnx.dll

  • Click the Move It button.
  • The list will be processed and the results will appear in the right hand pane.
  • If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
  • When finished click Exit to exit the programme.
  • A log C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log will be created (where mmddyyyy_hhmmss are numbers giving date and time the log was created).
  • Post the log back here please.
Run a scan with HJT and when finished check the following items (if found).

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://softwarereferral.com/jump.php?wmid=…6Ojg5&lid=2

Now close all open windows and click Fix Checked to remove them.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please boot your computer into Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account (as long as it is an account with Administrator privileges).
Once in Safe Mode
  • Open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
  • Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2, then press Enter.
  • You will be prompted with: Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?
  • Type Y, then press Enter, to remove the Desktop background and clean infected registry keys.
  • The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected.
  • You may be prompted to replace the infected file.
  • If prompted, type Y, then press Enter.
  • The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
  • A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process.
  • Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply. The report can also be found at C:\rapport.txt
Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.
  • Click Start > Run and type cleanmgr then click OK.
  • This will bring up the Disk Cleanup window.
  • Check the following entries.
    • Temporary Internet Files.
    • Recycle Bin.
    • Temporary Files.
  • Click OK.
  • When a prompt pops up click Yes.
Now run a new scan with HJT and send me the log please.

Summary of the logs I need from you in your next post:
  • OTMoveIt log
  • Smitfraudfix log (C:\rapport.txt)
  • New HJT log

Please post each log separately to prevent them being cut off by the forum post size limiter.
Hi Gary.

Thanks for replying to my sos. I have been looking through the various posts on here, and managed to get rid of the trojans/spyware, I simply went to basics and did the scans properly using various programs, and re booting. Now I have found that the desktop background has gone, I didn't use smitfraud though.

What I did do, in order to try and get the desktop background back, was reinstall xp, which didn't work, but I did manage to have a fresh user account, which does have everything working, although I still have boxes coming up for windows installer and pc connectivity trying to connect everytime I restart. Never see them before.

What do you recommend now? Should I run a Hjt scan log on my original user account, so you can see what's gone and what's lurking? Or shall I continue with the proceedures you kindly advised?
Hi. I'm carrying out the processes you said, but the moveit log/file doesn't move anything, this is the result… File/Folder C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1 not found. File/Folder c:\windows\system32\pjmgiclnhk.exe not found. File/Folder C:\WINDOWS\msddx.dll not found. File/Folder C:\WINDOWS\msqnx.dll not found. Created on 07/14/2007 15:39:26 I'll do another hjt log, and post it for you.
Hi blaze.s8n, Log into your original account and follow all the instructions I gave in my last post please. Don't worry about the OTMoveIt log, looks like the files had been removed by some of your earlier scans and only the registry entries were left. Continue with the fix and post me the logs I asked for please.
Hi there Gary.

I followed the excellent instructions you posted, I removed the items from the hjt log, I have completed the smitfraudfix.cmd in safe mode. Here is the rapport for that.

Everything seems ok, the registry clean was good, brought back my desktop background. I found some tips on maintenance of the pc on one of the topics on here, so I'll make a point of doing them. So how's the log looking?
Log looks good, however I'd like to give your machine an overall scan to make sure we've got everything.

HJT is a very good programme, but there's a whole lot of places it doesn't look. I like to use Kaspersky's online scan because it doesn't attempt to "cure" anything, just give a really good scan and a log I'm familiar with.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: You must be using Internet Explorer as your browser as it will be necessary to install an Active X component to your computer.

Important If you have previously used Kaspersky Online Scanner (before 8th Aug 2006), you will have to uninstall the old version using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel before you can use the new version.

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings.
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK.
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post please.
Note: The Kaspersky online scanner is not yet fully compatible with IE7. You may get returned to a window without the Accept/Decline buttons after allowing the ActiveX control. The buttons are there - you just can't see them! Click on the zoom button (bottom, right of the window) and change it from 100% to 75%. You should now see the buttons. Reset to 100% once the license has been accepted.
Hi, I have started the scan, and waiting for it to finish. It looks like it's found some viruses/infected objects. I will post the log immediately when it is finished in a few mins. it's on %99!

There are a lot of locked and skipped objects,,,is that normal?
Kaspersky log looks good, most of the "infections" are encrypted backups from Spybot and the tools we've used to remove the infection.

The locked items are normal, they're mostly logs and dat files which can't be scanned because their parent process is active. I've looked through them and don't see anything of concern.

There are a couple of minor things to attend to.

First

Empty your Recycle Bin, if there are more than one account on your computer repeat for each account.

Next
  • Double click OTMoveIt.exe to launch it.
  • Copy/Paste the contents of the box below into the left hand pane of OTMoveIt.

C:\Downloads\CrazyGolfWorldTour-dm[1].exe

  • Click the Move It button.
  • The list will be processed and the results will appear in the right hand pane.
  • If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
  • When finished click Exit to exit the programme.
  • A log C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log will be created (where mmddyyyy_hhmmss are numbers giving date and time the log was created).
  • Post the log back here please.
Then

Let's clear out the programmes we've been using to clean up your computer, they are not suitable for general malware removal and could cause damage if used inappropriately.
  • Double click OTMoveIt.exe to launch the programme.
  • Click on the CleanUp! button.
  • OTMoveIt will download a list from the Internet, if your firewall or other defensive programmes alerts you, allow it access.
  • You will be prompted to allow the clean up procedure, click Yes
  • When finished exit out of OTMoveIt
  • Now delete OTMoveIt.exe (if present).
Are you still noticing any problems?, because it appears your system is all clean. If not, it's time to secure your system against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Lets reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to clean the restore points.
  • Turn off System Restore.
    • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • Check Turn off System Restore.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Reboot.
  • Turn ON System Restore.
    • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • NOTE: only do this ONCE, NOTon a regular basis
We need to re hide system files.

To do so, please follow the steps below:
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Put a check by "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Do not show hidden files and folders."
  • Check "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

Updating Windows and Internet Explorer

IMPORTANT: You need to update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site to get the critical updates.

If you're running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed. (Free at Microsoft Office Update).

Make your Internet Explorer more secure
  • From within Internet Explorer click on Tools > Options > Security > Internet > Custom Level.
  • Make sure these options are set as follows:
    • Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
The following are free programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A brief description is included with each item, click on name to go to download site.
  • Adaware SE Personal
Adaware is a free program. It scans for known spyware on your computer. These scans should be run at least once every two weeks. For more information, see this tutorial
  • Spybot S & D
Spybot is a scanner like Adaware. It scans for spyware and other malicious programs. It is important to have both Adaware and Spybot on your computer because each program provides unique detection and protection measures. Spybot has preventitive tools that stop programs from even installing on your computer.
To see how to set this up as well as more spybot features, see here
  • SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes "kill bits" in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here
  • IE Spyad
It puts many bad webpages on your restricted zones LIST. This means that you can still view the "bad" webpages, but the webpages can't do certain things (such as use javascripts and cookies). Use IE Spyad for single account computers, and IE Spyad 2 for multi account computers.
  • Hosts file:
    • Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them.
    • In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages.
    • We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages.
    • However, it can slow down certain computers.
    • This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
    • Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file, here.
  • If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
    • Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen)
    • Click run
    • In the dialog box, type services.msc
    • hit enter, then locate dns client
    • Highlight it, then double-click it.
    • On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual.
    • Click ok
  • Use an Anti Virus Software - It's very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a LISTing of some, on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
Computer Safety On line - LIST of free Anti virus programs
  • Use a Firewall - I cannot stress enough how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this webpage out.
    See here to choose one.
  • Site Advisor This is a utility that can be downloaded and installed. It loads an icon to the taskbar of your browser (versions for IE and Firefox), indicating the trustworthiness of the site you are on. Green for safe, Red for suspicious. Click on the icon to access details that SiteAdvisor has about the site.

Just a final reminder for you.
  • UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
  • Run Spybot and Adaware regularly. (Once a week minimum)
  • It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure you always have the latest security updates installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system… problems etc.

Gary R

The above is a general post I give when someone's computer is clean. Obviously you have already taken care of some of the issues mentioned, but it is important that you read through them, and address any that you may have missed.

Keep secure.

Gary R
Hi there, thanks for the help. Here's the moveIt log… C:\Downloads\CrazyGolfWorldTour-dm[1].exe moved successfully. Created on 07/16/2007 19:45:34 I am currently cleaning up, and will update windows and get some of them programs that I haven't got. I am still getting Windows installer trying to start several times at the start up, along with PC connectivity doing the same. The pc is running kinda slow, but I think it always has. lol.

Not sure exactly what you mean by this, can you explain in more detail, including any messages that may pop up.

May be worth looking to see whether there's any hidden processes running that the scans so far haven't shown.

Download GMER and unzip it to your Desktop. (It will create a folder GMER)

Alternate Download Site
  • Disconnect from the Internet, and close all running programmes.
  • There is a small chance this programme may crash your computer, so save any work you have open.
  • Open the GMER folder, and double click gmer.exe
  • Let the gmer.sys driver load if asked.
  • If it gives you a warning at programme start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan ….. click OK.

Do not attempt to fix anything it may find, firewall and anti-virus programmes use files and drivers that are often seen on these logs.
Basically, when the pc has loaded the desktop icons, a small grey box appears; Windows Installer. Trying to connect. Then it shuts down. opens and closes about 5 times. Alond with another box, PC connectivity Solutions. does the same. I'll check out the new scan. I probably wont do it until tomorrow (it's late here in uk) and post it on when it's complete. I appreciate the help though. I'd buy you a pint if I could.
As far as I can see PC Connectivity solutions is concerned with your Nokia PC Suite, I don't have any experience with that programme, probably best to ask Nokia about it. If you have the installer for this programme it might be worth just uninstalling and re-installing the programme to see if that fixes things.
