[Resolved]Browser Redirector Problems

Every time I go to Google or Ask.com & do A query I have to open the same link 3-4 times before it will open to the correct page. I can't seem to figure it out. PLEASE HELP!!! I'm including my HJT log & startup log. I hope this isn't too much info. Also, I have ran Spybot S&d, Ad-Aware 2007, Mcafee Tools, PCPitstop Exterminate & AVG Anti-virus. None of them have corrected the problem.

Welcome to the forum, sorry for the delay. I am looking at a clean log, no malware or viruses that I can see.

Lets do a few things.

Download and Install CCleaner
If you don't want the Yahoo Toolbar, be sure to uncheck it during installation
* Click on Run Cleaner
Tutorial for CCleaner


Close any instance of Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer.
  • Go to Start> Control Panel> Internet Options . You shoud be on the General Tab
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Files > and offline content as well
  • Then go to the Programs Tab and Reset Web Settings

If this did not help, you have AVG Anti Spyware installed, run it this way and let me see the report.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
  • Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on How to Act and then select Quarantine <– Dont forget this
  • Under Reports
  • Select Automatically generate report after every scan
  • Un-Select Only if threats were found
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 <– Do not run the scan yet.
Boot your computer into Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
  • This will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
  • Then press the Enter on your Keyboard

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
  • AVG will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
  • Next select the Reports icon at the top.
  • Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system <– Dont forget this
  • make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5


  • Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
  • Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
  • It should have an icon next to it:

    Select it and click Remove.
  • Reboot your system.
  • Then go to the Sun Microsystems and install the update
  • Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 Update 1 <–This is what you need to download and install.
  • If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
  • If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
  • Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future

Good Morning Paul,

I need to see the HJT log in normal windows and I don't need the startup list. AVG found nothing :thumbup:

Has the problem been corrected ??

AVG isn't the only thing that finds nothing. Everything finds nothing.
That's what really mistifies me.
I'm really not computer illiterate & have referred several people to this website for tech help but never thought I'd really have to be using it myself. :rofl:

Log still looks good, this may be a problem as services do not run out of a temp directory

Remove it with HJT
O23 - Service: McAfee Application Installer Cleanup (0059351185120017) (0059351185120017mcinstcleanup) - McAfee, Inc. - C:\WINDOWS\TEMP�5935~1.EXE

  • Go to Start> Run and type in services.msc then press Enter
  • Scroll down to McAfee Application Installer Cleanup
  • Double Click that service to open it.
  • Click on Stop Service.
  • Then change the Startup Type to Disabled.
  • OK your way out of the program.
  • Open HJT > Misc Tools > Delete an NT Service
  • Type in McAfee Application Installer Cleanup
  • Then click on OK, it will ask you to reboot, do so.


Run another system cleaner.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up



Now run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan: Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
Post the log along with a New HJT Log into your next reply.

I ran Kaspersky Virus Scanner & it found nothing. I imagine that's why it didn't give me the chance to save a log file of it. Here's the new hjt log.
I am still having the same problem as well. :rofl:

Paul,

You have a very clean log, all the scans are turning up nothing, we can run this last scan to check for hidden files, if it comes up empty then I believe this may be a windows or software conflict of some sort.

Download and Save Blacklight to your desktop:
  • Double-click blbeta.exe
  • Then accept the agreement
  • Click > scan then > next
  • You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).
  • Copy and paste this log in your next reply.
  • Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"

Sorry it took me so long. I just got home from work. Here's the log you asked for. I'm not sure what the hidden file was but as soon as I post this i'm going to shut down & re-boot. At least something finally turned up. I wouldn't think it could be a Windows error because the only thing that works weird is i.e.7. Every time I use a search engine & type in a word (ex:vacation) everything looks fine till I ask it to open a certain page it found like (expedia.com). It will instead go to another place for vacations or another search engine. Blacklight did find a file, lets do a few things to try and identify it

You need to enable windows to show all files and folders, instructions Here

Go to VirusTotal and submit these files for analysis, just use the browse feature and then subit them , you will get a report back, post the report into this thread for me to see.

Also look for that file yourself, right click on it and go to properties and see who owns the file.

I already knew how to enable the hidden files but i couldn't find a copy of the file on the system after blacklight ran it's course. I'm running blacklight agian just to make sure & i'm also running trend micro for any possible program problems & such. Also, i wanted to ask your opinion of these services as i've never had to use them myslef. Download Pocket Killbox to your desktop.

Highlight the file with the complete path inside the Quote Box and press Ctrl C on your keyboard.

c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\kdawx.exe

  • Open Pocket Killbox
  • Go to File > Paste from clipboard
  • Set it to Delete on Reboot
  • Tick the box that says End Explorer shell while killing file
  • If its not greyed out..Click the radio button that say Unregister .dll before deleting.
  • Make sure Single File is selected
  • Click on the Red circle with the white X
  • It will ask you to confirm the deletion…Say yes
  • It will ask you to reboot, say yes
If you get a message "pending operations has been stopped by external process!" then reboot the computer manually.

Am I still supposed to rename the file 1st in f-secure? If so, what do I do, just change the end extension to a .txt file? :huh: Also, I decided since I couldn't find any trace of this kdawx in my files I looked in the registry :unsure: & sure enough I found it in there under: HKEY_CURRENT_USER/software/microsoft/search assistant/ACMru/5603 :scratch: Does this mean it shipped with the operating system & is ok? It looks like it was installed the same day I installed my operating system & I would think anything under microsoft would be legit. Any thoughts?

  • Create a new Restore Point with the System Restore Program <– Very Important
  • You will have to be in Catagory View in the Control Panel to see this.
  • Go to Start> Control Panel> and up on the top left, make sure your in Catagory View
  • Go to Performance and Maintenance> System Restore> ( this will also be up on your top left ) then Create a New Restore Point
  • You can name the Restore Point anything you like

Open your registry editor (Start / Run / regedit) to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER
+Software
+Microsoft
+Search Assistant
+ACMru

Highlight the ACMru key and delete it. Reboot or
log off/on, else Windows will recreate the cache.

Well, so far so good. I haven't used it much since I just got home but I'll keep trying/ At least i'm a little more prepared now to defeat this type of attack if it happens again.

By the way, in my previous post i was referring to blacklight not f-secur. I was a little tired on that post.

Is there anything you can recommend to do other than all the stuff I have now & all the stuff on your website?
I update & scan quite regularly & try to keep my computer as clean & well maintained as possible.
