My ISP explained that the reason my connection is so slow is that I have a lot of extra processes running that slows my computer down. This is what I have done so far: I ran the following spyware and antivirus programs: Avast, Avira Antivir, Windows defender and did not find anyspy, add or malicious ware on my computer. I also downloaded a Task Manager alternative: Process Explorer and did not find anything out of the ordinary. My final method of trying to speed my computer up is this forum and my log file generated by HijackThis. Thanks.

Here is the logfile:

Hello Pine and welcome to the TomCoyote Forums

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your problem.

I also notice from the log that there are running more than one different Anti-Virus programs with Auto-protect enabled. Avast and AntiVir. Never install more than one Antivirus and Firewall! Rather than giving you extra protection, it will decrease the reliability of it seriously!
The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Also because more than one Antivirus and Firewall installed are not compatible with each other, it can cause system performance problems and a serious system slowdown.

So you have to make a decision here and keep the Antivirus you prefer and uninstall the other one.
Then reboot after uninstalling.

Now, please post a fresh HJT log and we will continue

Regards,

Trevuren
I have deleted Avira antivirus program and are now running Avast. Here is the HJT log file as requeted after the reboot:

There is not much extra fat to trim.

A. We must disable the Real-Time Protection feature of Windows Defender for it may interfere with the changes we need to make.

To disable Real-Time Protection:
  • Go to "Tools" | "General Settings"
  • Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
  • Uncheck "Turn on real-time protection (recommended)"
  • Remember to reactivate this feature when we have finished all our work.

B. Please RUN HijackThis
  • Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4EFB-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {e2e2dd38-d088-4134-82b7-f2ba38496583} - %windir%\Network Diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe (file missing)

    Optional deactivations:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\bin\jusched.exe"
    O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

Neither of the first two entries above (The 04's) is required to be run at Startup, thus continuously, and they consume an enormous amount of resources. By placing a checkmark beside these entries, you are just preventing them from starting every time you boot up. I highly recommend that you add these two to the first list. These services will remain available to you just by starting them from the Program List.

    O23 - Service: Google Updater Service (gusvc) - Google - C:\Program Files\Google\Common\Google Updater\GoogleUpdaterService.exe

I can't see the need to have Google continuously updating itself. I would get rid of it myself

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Reboot Your System

  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in this thread so we can check how everything looks now. In addition, please tell me of any improvement.
Regards,

Trevuren
Hi Trevuren

Thanks for helping. :wavey: I really appreciate it. I could not "fix" the following entries.

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
O23 - Service: Google Updater Service (gusvc) - Google - C:\Program Files\Google\Common\Google Updater\GoogleUpdaterService.exe

The first two are no big deal. Some analysts leave them, others remove them. They are not a resource problem.

Try the following to stop the 023 Service: (Did you get any error message when you tried to "fix" the Service?)

Go Start, then Run and in the run box type the following: sc stop gusvc

Then hit Enter and restart your system.

Please post a fresh HJT log
Hi Trevuren

I did not get an error message when I tried to "fix" the google update log.

I tried to delete it the way you described, but unfortunately it did not work. Here is the log again.
