[Resolved]Indestructable Hijack Program

Looking for the outcome? Ask AI

About a week or so ago I was looking for shareware statistics programs. During the process, one of the sites asked me to register and run some registration code. I went brain dead and actually installed the code. Then I downloaded one of the shareware files and it was infected with a virus. I instantly deleted the file and uninstalled the code and then ran Adaware and Symantec Virus Checker with updated definitions. Everything was OK. However, I don't use this computer much. My children do. So I didn't notice any problems.

So I logged in and I opened a browser and did a search on GOOGLE. My browser was redirected to other sites. I ran adaware and symantec and nothing showed up. I then downloaded other programs and nothing came up. I cannot say for certain because of the time delay between action and symptom, but it is almost certain that I installed the code that caused my problems. I knew better, I just got careless.

I eventually stumbled upon this site and did the check list of things to do before posting my log files. Virtually everything I ran including Spybot SD and Adaware say that everything is OK.

I then ran the AVG Anti Spyware in safe mode and it found some ad ware. I quarantined everything. However, when I loaded the browser, it continues to hijack me.

I ran AVG Anti Spyware in safe mode again and it registered everything as clean. So whatever it found is not the culprit. So how do I fix this?

I've tried everything I know and all this program does is laff at me.

While I've been waiting I read posts throughout this site and did a search for everything in my HJT log. I was able to identify some spyware. Then I went over to GeeksToGo and found some more hints. I kept deleting stuff and running anti spywar stuff. After about 7 hours, I think I killed off whatever it was that ailed me, because I don't have any problems any more. whew!

Here's my HJT log, is it clean or did I leave any scraps lying around?

dspatz,

Welcome to Tom Coyote . Sorry about the delay in responding but we are as most times just overwhelmed with logs.

You still have some issues going on, do this.

AVG Anti-Spyware Free

Make sure you follow these instructions correctly to Remove or Quarantine what it finds and also to save the report, without me seeing the report my hands are tied.
Download and install the free version of AVG Anti-Spyware Free to your desktop. It's very important that I see the report so make sure you follow the instructions and save the log.
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware Free, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
  • Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <– Dont forget this
  • Under Reports
  • Select Automatically generate report after every scan
  • Un-Select Only if threats were found
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware Free<– Do not run the scan yet.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\windows\system32\blank.htm
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\windows\system32\blank.htm

Boot your computer into Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
  • This will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
  • Then press the Enter on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware Free by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
  • AVG will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
  • Next select the Reports icon at the top.
  • Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system <–Don't forget this
  • make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important, I need to see that log.
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware Free

Reboot and run this system cleaner.

Download and Install CCleaner
If you don't want the Yahoo Toolbar, be sure to uncheck it during installation
* Click on Run Cleaner
* Run the Issues Scan < – After it scans your system, when you click on the Fix button and it asks you to backup the Registry..Say Yes
Tutorial for CCleaner

I need to see the AVG Report and a new HJT log renamed. You renamed the folder and not the program. Go back and rename FIXME to Hijackthis.

open the folder and right click on the HJT Icon, (looks like a red stick of dynamite with a plunger) and rename it to Scanner.exe. <– Don't forget the .exe and post a new log.
Thanks for the help!

I'm glad you looked, I thought that I was free and clear of hijacking. Let me know if it's OK now !

Thanks!

D.

This has to go, its bad

Go to Start > Run and type in Notepad
Notepad will open
Copy and paste the following into NotePad

sc stop NET Framework Service
sc delete NET Framework Service

  • Click File > Save as >type in cmd.bat
  • Under "Save as type" Select All files
  • Save it to your Desktop
  • Close Notepad
  • The cmd.bat file should now appear on your Desktop
  • Double Click cmd.bat
  • Reboot your Computer
  • Run Hijackthis and post a new log please
When I execute the batch file, I get the following error messages. c:\>sc stop NET Framework Service 'sc' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable porgram or batch file. c:\>sc delete NET Framework Service 'sc' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable porgram or batch file. So what exactly has me infected? Thanks! D.
Lets do it this way. This is what it is.

http://www.castlecops.com/o23list-2087.html
  • Go to Start> Run and type in services.msc then press Enter
  • Scroll down to .NET Framework Service (.NET Connection Service) Could be listed either or both ways, there is a network connection entry that is legit so be careful.
  • Double Click that service to open it.
  • Click on Stop Service.
  • Then change the Startup Type to Disabled.
  • OK your way out of the program.
  • Open HJT > Misc Tools > Delete an NT Service
  • Type in .NET Connection Service
  • Then click on OK, it will ask you to reboot, do so.

After reboot, fix this with HJT if still present

Post a new log please.
Hopefully the bug is dead!

Log looks good  Just one thing to check related to that 023 entry. If you look at your HJT log you will see multiple instances of svchost.exe running, this is perfectly normal and is needed for windows to run, BUT it runs out of the WINNT\system32 folder. There may be one running out of the windows folder that could be related to the 023 entry we just removed, if so delete it.

C:\WINNT\system32\svchost.exe
<– Legit, ,do not remove

C:\WINNT\svchost.exe <– Could be related to the 023 entry, if its present, delete it.

How are things running now??
Was the svchost file in the windows folder ??

Glad things are well

Malware Complaints
Are you mad ? I mean really mad, seething mad, so mad your ready to spit, mad that you have taken your hard earned dollars to buy a computer only to have some Miscredents, Dirt Bags and Cyber Criminals install a malicious program on your computer without your knowledge or consent. You can post your complaint at the above site. If you live in the U.S.A. you can also report your grievance to your State Attorney Generals Office and the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Consumer Protection.

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

Here are some free programs to install, don't leave home without them
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.

Let me know about that file
