Hi everyone
This log file is from my in-laws computer. They dial up for their service and they were telling me that the computer would intermitentantly freeze up only when they went online. I took the system home to test it out. I too found that it was intermitent. But it has gotten worse. Now it freezes whenever you dial up. You get on and you usually get to one site and then it all freezes. You can't even do a restart.
But here is the interesting thing. I have Cable so I siwtched it over to my connection and it runs great. As a matter of fact I'm posting from it right now. So I'm stumped. Thought I would post a log here to see if something shows. I hate to have to wipe this thing out when the problem seems to be only when they dial up thru their provider. The only thing they said they did different was add an accelerater the dial up provider provided. I did unistall it to see if that helped but nothing changed. A couple of times when I went to shutdown the system after dialing up I noticed that an end now screen came up showing ccApp which I think is Nortons AV which they use. I have run spybot and cleaned it up before I ran this log.
Thanks for your thoughts

Hello and welcome to the forum. Sorry about the delay in responding :( If you still need help, Scan again with HijackThis, and copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi thanks for responding. the computer is running the same as I described above. It was the inlaws system and I returned it to them with this intermitent problem going on. If you can look over the log in my above post that would be great. I would post a new one but it would be too hard to explain it to them. Nothing should have changed in it.
If they're on dial-up, I'd suggest changing their anti-virus program to one that uses alot less resources.

Here's a free one:
Click HERE and Save, Install, Update and run a full scan.

After the above:
To completely uninstall Symantec AntiVirus?
Problem: The solution to many problems with Symantec AntiVirus is to completely uninstall Symantec AntiVirus, then re-install. You can use these instructions to completely uninstall Symantec AntiVirus.

Solution: In order to completely uninstall Symantec AntiVirus and all related components you need to follow these instructions.
Note: This procedure will remove all Symantec products, not just Symantec AntiVirus.

1.Click on Start | Settings | Control Panel
2.In the control panel double-click on Add / Remove Programs
3.Look through the list of installed programs for any item that says either "Norton" or "Symantec" or "LiveUpdate". (for example "Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition" or "Norton AntiVirus 2000")
4.For each "Norton", "Symantec", or "LiveUpdate" item, select the item and click Add / Remove. Follow the instructions, and click Yes or Yes to all when prompted.
When you are done there should be no items in the list that say "Norton", "Symantec", or "LiveUpdate".
5.Click OK to close the Add / Remove Programs window.
6.Reboot your computer if it hasn't already automatically rebooted.
7.Delete the c:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus (or c:\Program Files\Norton) folder.
8.Delete the c:\Program Files\Symantec folder.
9.Delete the c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared folder.

If uninstalling Symantec AntiVirus using Add / Remove Programs does not work, you can use the directions on this Symantec website to manually remove all elements of Symantec Antivirus from your computer.

I will encourage them to try this free antivirus program. They only have about 60 days left on their Nortons. Will this antivirus program protect them well? Another thing you might beable to answer. Does it automatically update its files when a connection is detected? They like not having to rember to update the Nortons. Thanks

Yes to both questions
Well the inlaws brought me back the computer. I have been working on removing programs they have not used or dont need. Word perfect office11 was one of them. I thought I read somwhere is could cause a conflict/ Plus its an old one that they loaded and I dont know if it was compatible with XP. We still have the end now boxes poping up when you shutdown or do a restart. I did pick up a new 56k modem that I will try and install to see if maybe some is a hardware issue. Not sure. But what I do know is after getting rid of some stuff we got the modem sounds back when you dial in. It never did that even though we got online. So that is a plus. In the meantime I did run a new hijackthis scan. thought I would post it. It sure looks liek they have way too much R1 and r0. Their homepage is Yahoo. Also what is the R11 options group International?
Thanks
I'm posting from the said computer because it is running fine on the Cable. But it still will give you the end now programs when shutting down or restarting. the dial up will work but it still will lock up intermitantley. ANd with that the rest of the system locks so you cant do a restart. But with cable things are fine.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Do you know what this one is R11 options group International? I'm so working on them with getting rid of the Nortons. I was hoping to straighten out the end now programs that pop up when they do restarts or shutdowns. I totally agree with getting rid of Nortons. The r4 propell chilitech acelerator is some sort of software that boosts their speed with their provider

This section corresponds to a non-default option group that has been added to the Advanced Options Tab in Internet Options on IE.

Leave it. It's alright.

The 04's aren't needed to run at startup.

This is a valid program but it is not required to run on startup.

This program is not required to start automatically as you can run it when you need to. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources.

Okay since the last post they took the computer home again because I had it up and running just fine after installing a new modem. Now I Never re installed their accelerater program but they did. This is after 2 days of it running great with no freezes. Well its back because they cant dial up. It will connect here at only 9.6. I removed the accelerater but that did not help. I was also told that they were online during some very very bad Thunderstorms we had. The next day they were unable to dial up. So this Time I told them I was going to uninstall Nortons for good. They agreed. Currently I'm posting using their computer which runs fine on my cable. So all the problems seem to be when you dial up. I will go out and purchase another modem and replace it again. Does Norton have a program that will remove any and all of their version? I appreciate you helping. I hope to not have to wipe this system out. Thanks

Okay I got rid of Nortons and installed AVG. I also installed a new modem and things are working just fine for now. When i go to shutdown or restart I still see end now program boxes pop up for IE and sometime for Ctmon. Not sure what that is all about. But you never have to hit end now. It just continues on I have not reinstalled that accelertor they are using and I'm not sure that I want to. I wonder if that may be causing some problems itself. After you install it you have to do a restart before its active. Wouild that mean it really in beds itself somewhere? Another thing is I was unable to delete this folder c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared folder. It said cannot delete symlcnet.dll access denied Do they need the windows firewall on with using Dial Up service? If not how do you get rid of the securtiy notice on the taskbar that says your not protected. This AVG. Will it protect them from worms and trojans? They do use Yahoo messenger and I think Nortons did protect that. These will be questions they might ask me and I would like to be prepared. Thanks
Are there other Antivirus programs that dont take up so much of their resources? Pay ones are okay too. I just want them totally protected.
