[Resolved]Can't Get Rid Of Adaware_mirar!

Dell Inspiron 1300 Laptop, running XP Home, has been running McAfee Security Center until now (firewall was turned way down, oops).

Had ZQuest trojan re-curring every day for the last 2 weeks….detected by McAfee, destroyed, and kept coming back. Also had a re-direct problem with IE 6.0 related to Adware_Mirar which McAfee found but could not delete (it was part of a package…??)

I ran AdAware2007, it found some other garbage….contacted McAfee tech support and spent 4 hours scanning the computer. Was told it was clean, but it was NOT.

Deleted McAfee and tried Norton Internet Security. Norton found and destroyed Zquest trojan, and it has not come back since (crossing fingers). Norton also found Downloader, Adware.Zquest, and Adware.Purityscan, all of them deleted by Norton.

Everything seems to be fixed, EXCEPT the re-direct problem with IE…..I have upgraded to IE 7.0 and it still has a mind of it's own…….will load the page you choose, then redirect to someplace else. I have installed FireFox and it runs great, no apparent problems.

I think it is that blasted Adware_Mirar, which I can't seem to get rid of!!! I tried going into the REGEDIT and deleting the files shown on Symantic's website, but they dont seem to be in there anyplace……….it's hiding:)

Hi Jettix2,

Can't see much wrong with your HijackThis log, please do a couple of scans:

Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Then please download F-Secure Blacklight
  • Click I ACCEPT and download the graphical user interface version to your Desktop
  • Double click the file to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
  • It will create the fsbl-xxxxxxx.log on your desktop.
  • The log will have a list of all items found.
  • Do not choose to rename any yet! I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present.
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.
Once complete, please post the Kaspersky log, the Blacklight log and a new HijackThis log.

I think what Kaspersky is flagging is not malware as such, but data changes related to an Internet Explorer Toolbar. The only toolbar I can see installed is Ebay Toolbar which is legitimate. To check this, you could temporarily uninstall the Ebay toolbar and see if the detections stop and reinstall it afterwards. Once you are satisfied it is not malware-related you should be able to tick "create rule" to stop this detection recurring.

Move HijackThis from the desktop to it's own folder:
  • Open My Computer, navigate to C:\ and make a new folder named HJT
  • Move the HijackThis.exe program file from your desktop to C:\HJT
  • If you wish to place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop, then right-click hijackthis.exe, select Send To and choose Desktop (create shortcut)
Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply
Once complete, please post both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.

Sorry I missed this question previously. Both are excellent products so you should choose the one you feel most confident with. Having two antivirus programs installed can lead to system problems so you must use only one. If you wish to get a '2nd opinion' use an online scanner instead of another installed antivirus program.

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using safe and free alternatives such as VLC Player or Media Player Classic.
To remove, open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs find Viewpoint Media Player and select Remove

Your Java is outdated and is now a security risk
Go to Start » Control Panel » Add/Remove Programs and remove Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Download and install the newest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) (version 6 update 2), from here:

ou have a program called Spyhunter installed on your computer. This program was until recently classified as a Rogue antispyware program. Typically, these programs do not provide any security benefits, and use false positives to goad users into purchasing a full version of the program. Due to it's dubious past, I strongly suggest you remove it - to do so, open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, look down the list for Spyhunter and remove it.

Please make sure you followed the instructions for moving HijackThis in the previous post.
Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines (if present):

R3 - URLSearchHook: &Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)


Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Use Windows Explorer to find and delete the following folder:

With Ebay toolbar uninstalled, IE seems to work fine. Once I re-install it, Kaspersky keeps blocking the toolbar "iexplorer.exe PID 212 attempt to perform suspiscious activity has been blocked." I can't find any way to allow this activity, and the Kaspersky alert window keeps popping up while I browse…. It is obnoxious, but I dont want to hide it from view because it CAN alert me to important things happening…..

Any thoughts?? Ben

I think you had already done most of the malware cleaning before we started, the main thing we achieved was getting rid of a some unwanted applications and isolating the problem with IE. We've also thoroughly checked your machine for any other malware.

I think that it's possible with Kaspersky to create a rule to 'allow' (ignore) this kind of behavior, in doing so however there may be a risk of malware activity being ignored also. There might be alternatives to the toolbar such as a desktop widget or lightweight stand-alone application depending on the functionality you use. I'd recommend uninstalling the toolbar, but if you wish to keep it then I recommend posting at the Kaspersky forum for help with these detections.

I think your machine is now clean :), some important final steps:

You can now delete fsbl.exe and dss.exe from your Desktop.

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up… and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Here are some tips to help you keep your computer clean:

Operating system vulnerabilities can easily be exploited by malware so please ensure your operating system is automatically kept up to date by using Windows Update:
Go to Start->Control Panel->Automatic Updates
Select Automatic and select a suitable schedule
Also, check that your antivirus program is set to automatically update daily.

You have a good antivirus program installed, however I recommend you also install antispyware software with real-time capabilities - this will protect you from a wider range of malware and also that it will protect you from system changes and spyware while you are working, not just removing malware after it has been installed. There are a range of paid-for and free packages available, a free one I can recommend is Windows Defender, available here:

Spywareblaster is a free program which prevents the download and installation of Internet Explorer ActiveX based malware by immunizing your system against it. You can download Spywareblaster from here and a tutorial to help you get started is available here.

Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.
