Hello all, :wavey:
I am a new member to this forum and was told by the Technical support team at CounterSpy software support to post my problem on this forum. My OS is Windows XP Home Edition. My problem is this. I am unable to remove any of the Windows Hosts files that are listed on my system. I would like to have just "Local Host 127.0.0.1 show up in my Windows Hosts file. Instead I have a slew of other hosts as well as 127.0.0.1

When I try to remove host files I don't want in the file, it will let me remove them but when I save the changes it saves only to "SAVE AS" and saves as .text. If I try to delete the whole file it give me the message " cannot delete hosts: access is denied. Make sure the disc is not full or write- protected and that the file is not currently in use."

I installed and then ran " Hijack This" software and created a log from the results of the report and here is the log report:

Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

Hi LDTate, Thank you for your support. Sorry I was delayed with responding to you suggestions but I was away over the 4th of July Holiday. I followed your instrucitons and when I got as far as running 'HostsXpert.exe' and clicked on "restore original hosts" I got the following message: "Error: cannot create file C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts As I mentioned in my original notes to the forum, I cannot even delete the entire file. It appears the the file is locked and I cannot fix it. Can this be fixed or do I have to reinstall windows XP? I really would prefer to avoid reinstalling XP if poosible. Thanks for any suggestions you may have to get around this mess. Houndlover :(

navigate to C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts. right click the hosts file, choose Properties and uncheck the "Read Only" box. Close the properties dialog box with the "OK" button. Let me know if that worked.

I tried that before but I tried again per your instructions and I get the message "access denied" It seems that I cannot alter the hosts file at all. Frustrating huh? Any other ideas? I will try anything you suggest. I appreciate all your help.

I appreciate all your help.

Reboot in Safe Mode and login as Administrator.

Restart your computer in Safe Mode.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.
This can take several miniutes to load.

Now see if you can navigate to
C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.
right click the hosts file, choose Properties and uncheck the "Read Only" box. Close the properties dialog box with the "OK" button.

YES! Perfect!!! Thank you so much! I did as you instructed and was able to clear the read only box in Safe Mode. I rebooted and windows XP reloaded. I went to c:\windows\system 32\drivers\etc\hosts and then opened it in word pad and deleted all those files I did not want there and just left localhost 127.0.0.1 in the file and it saved it. I then had to log back in to Safe Mode again and checked the box to read only and rebooted. I looked in "hosts files" again and it saved it. I can't thank you enough for all the time you spent walking me through the process and resolving my problem. Thank you....thank you :D Houndlover

Can I remove this file? :
O3 - Toolbar: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!

If you don't want the Yahoo Toolbar, you can remove it.

You can remove any programs / Tools I had you install. Use Add/Remove Programs to remove if listed there otherwise just delete them and empty recycle bin.

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

If you dont have any programs like these, I would recommend that you get them.
Spywareblaster,
Spywareguard.

Also get a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Do not use Ad-aware if you have McAfee's VirusScan and AntiSpyware

Safe Surfing. :D

I would also suggest you read this:

Thanks.....I did all you suggested and just so you now...I use "Panda" antivirus and Firewall protection plus I use "Counterspy" as my Adware protection. I update my Panda antivirus software and threat signatures on a daily basis. My counterspy runs a check of my system nightly. So I keep a pretty tight check of my system at all times. I believe some of my Host files got corrupted as far back as 2003 and I was not aware of it at that time. Again, I want to thank you for all your support and advice.....You have been of tremendous help to me. Warmest regards, Houndlover :wavey:
