Clicks.linksynergy.com Browser Redirection

15 min read

This thread's last reply is from . Advice, software, and links below may be out of date — treat specific steps and download links with caution.

Looking for the outcome? Ask AI

Sometimes when I enter a site in my URL or click on a link, I will be redirected to clicks.linksynergy.com, which apparently is trying to register my attempt to view another site silently, however for some reason it occasionally will fail to redirect me, so I get a good look at what is happening. The title of the failed redirection page is actually a blank GIF image that is 1x1, if that helps at all.

I like to consider myself fairly skilled with computers, and I have run S&D scans as well as HJT scans…I can't find anything suspicious! Everything seems to be normal…I'd really appreciate the help.

For reference, I am protected by Kaspersky Internet Security 6.0.

Thanks again :)

Hi XeonXT,

I can't see anything wrong with your HijackThis log either, however that doesn't mean your machine is clean so we should do a scan to check for malware:

Scan with F-Secure Online Scanner
  • Open this page in Internet Explorer:
    http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml
  • Press Start scanning - this will open a new window
  • Allow the ActiveX control to install and run then Accept the license terms
  • Click Custom Scan, place a checkmark next to Scan inside archives, leave all other options at the defaults and press Start
  • The scanner will now download, then it will fully scan your computer for malware - this will take some time to complete
  • Press Automatic cleaning (recommended)
  • Once it has finished the cleaning process, click Show Report
  • Select File->Save As…, change Save as type: to Text File and save the report to your Desktop
  • Post a copy of the report in your next response
Next, download and Install a custom hosts file - this file will prevent your browser from connecting with many common advertising sites, including some linksynergy sub-domains.

Stop and Disable the DNS Client Service
Go to Start, Run and type Services.msc and click OK.
Under the Extended Tab, Scroll down and find this service.
DNS Client
Right-Click on the DNS Client Service. Choose Properties
Select the General tab. Click on the Stop button.
Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side at the Start-up Type box.
From the drop-down menu, click on Manual
Click the Apply tab, then click OK

Then, please download HostXpert.
  • Unzip HostsXpert.zip
  • Double click on HostsXpert.exe
  • Click Backup / Restore -> Create Backup to back up your current hosts file
  • Then click on Download, then MVPs Hosts-> Replace and OK to install the MVPs hosts file
  • Click on File Handling and Make Hosts Read Only to secure it against changes
  • Close program when complete.
NOTE: If you have internet connection problems after installing the hosts file, open HostsXpert and click on Make Writeable? then Backup / Restore -> Restore Backup to reverse the changes.

Once complete, please post the F-Secure log along with a new HijackThis log and let me know if the problem is still occurring.
Thanks, but the problem is still occurring. The difference is that this time, instead of staying at the http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?…=3&subid=0/ blank page, looks like the hosts file is refusing the connection to clicks.linksynergy.com, so I just get a "Problem Loading Page". But the browser is still trying to redirect me.

Hi XeonXT,

Can you tell me if this is happening in Internet Explorer, Firefox or both?

Also, can you reproduce the problem - i.e. can you find a URL which will cause the problem to occur every click? Please post an example page/link on which you have the problem.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply
Once complete, please post both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.
Again I thank you for your help. And now I will give you some truly baffling details about this.

So far I have found 1 site that will always redirect. In FireFox (absolute latest version), if I go to "music123.com or http://music123.com" I am redirected. Oddly enough, if I type "www.music123.com", the redirection will not occur. Leaving out the www seems to create a problem…though I cannot say whether or not this is always the case, but at the moment this rule seems to hold true.

Now as for IE, visiting "music123.com" results in the Windows Live Search coming up with "music123.com" as the search. Visiting "http://music123.com" results in a "page cannot be displayed" error. Visting "http://www.music123.com" results in the normal page.

A few minutes later after typing this post, I retry the sites via FireFox, and no redirections occur, even after typing "music123.com". Very strange.

I'll let you chew on these details while I run the next scan you gave me :)

Hi XeonXT,

I tested music123.com and on a standard machine the site works fine in both IE & Firefox, but on my own machine (with Javascript blocked in Firefox and the same hosts file as you), I get the same results - www.music123.com works OK but music123.com doesn't resolve in IE and in Firefox it hangs on a click.linksynergy.com page. I'm not sure what the cause of this is yet but I don't think it's malware, however one of the fixes we will do may resolve the issue for you. In any case, please post any other URLs you have which cause this issue and I'll test them too.

There are some things showing in your logs which we need to deal with.

The DSS log shows Kaspersky antivirus and firewall disabled. Please re-enable both immediately as your system is at great risk without them, if you have any problems or this information is incorrect please let me know.

Next, some uninstalls to consider:

Your Java is outdated and is now a security risk
Go to Start » Control Panel » Add/Remove Programs
Find and remove J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 7
You can download and install the newest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE), from here:
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using safe and free alternatives such as VLC Player or Media Player Classic.
To remove, open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs find Viewpoint Media Player and select Remove

You have Azureus and uTorrent, P2P file sharing programs installed on your computer. These programs does not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but P2P file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I recommend you remove it, but of course the choice is yours.
You can remove Azureus via Add/Remove Programs, and remove uTorrent by deleting utorrent.exe from your Desktop.

It looks like you have used MSConfig to disable some startup items, there is one program disabled by MSConfig which I can't find any information on called modremind.exe and it is/was located on your Desktop - do you know anything about this?

Next, fix file associations with DSS:
  • Make sure DSS.exe is on your Desktop
  • Next press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:

    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daft

  • Press OK to the disclaimer(s) and then press Scan
  • Place checkmarks in all the boxes that appear and press Fix
Next, upload some files for scanning:
Open http://virusscan.jotti.org/
Copy/paste this file and path into the white box at the top:

c:\documents and settings\user\local settings\temp\jswmidin.sys

Press Submit - this will submit the file for testing.
Please copy and paste the results in your next response.
Repeat this process for the following files also:

C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\j0uiyz6.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\1610154517.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\dh2wxeg.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\1614368533.exe

Next, press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:

reg export HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dtsss94sqp "%userprofile%\Desktop\reg1.txt"

Then, press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:

reg export HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Qldsehiranw "%userprofile%\Desktop\reg2.txt"

Files called reg1.txt and reg2.txt should appear on your Desktop, please post the contents of these files in your next response.

Then create a new DSS report:
  • Make sure DSS.exe is on your Desktop
  • Next press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:

    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config

  • Press OK to the disclaimer(s) and a configuration box will appear
  • Place checkmarks in all the boxes under Main Log and press Scan!
  • One report called main.txt will be produced, post a copy in your next response
Once complete, please post the Jotti results, the reg1.txt and reg2.txt files and the new DSS report.
Thanks Silver,

-> As a matter of fact, music123 might have actually been the only website that caused the redirection. Perhaps I overreacted due to the fact that I was noticing other anomalies in my browsing, like occasionally not being able to load common pages, and this pushed me over the edge

-> Kaspersky was disabled while I scanned so it would not interfere. This was only temporary.

-> I updated Java to the newest version successfully.

-> I actually noticed and removed Viewpoint a few hours before you posted

-> While I don't have uTorrent installed, Azureus is used only for legit torrent downloads provided by legit companies, such as large game patches.

-> modremind.exe was a program I wrote myself to remind me of something. How do I get rid of these disabled entries? I don't need it anymore, and I've got many entries cluttering my MSConfig.

-> Fixed the file associations successfully

-> c:\documents and settings\user\local settings\temp\jswmidin.sys no longer existed at the time of scanning, or was otherwise being hidden from scanning.

Hi XeonXT,

-> As a matter of fact, music123 might have actually been the only website that caused the redirection. …

If this is the case then of course that's fine, but keep an eye on it and let me know if the problem recurs.

Kaspersky continually warned of RootShell riskware

I've not heard of that problem before, what process did it flag? You should find this in the detection log.

-> I updated Java to the newest version successfully.
-> I actually noticed and removed Viewpoint a few hours before you posted

How do I get rid of these disabled entries? I don't need it anymore, and I've got many entries cluttering my MSConfig.

Tell me which entries you wish to remove and I'll help you delete of them.

-> Fixed the file associations successfully

Re the infected files, they are very bad news, this is my standard warning for victims of this type of malware:

Your computer appears to have been infected by a backdoor trojan. These programs have the ability to steal passwords and other information from your system. If you use your computer for sensitive purposes such as internet banking then I recommend you take the following steps immediately:
  • Use another, uninfected computer to change all your internet passwords, especially ones with financial implications such as banks, paypal, ebay, etc. You should also change the passwords for any other site you use.
  • Call your bank(s), credit card company or any other institution which may be affected and advise them that your login/password or credit card information may have been stolen and ask what steps to take with regard to your account.
  • Consider what other private information could possibly have been taken from your computer and take appropriate steps
This infection can almost certainly be cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it will be impossible to be 100% sure that the machine is clean, if this is unacceptable to you then you should consider reformatting the system partition and reinstalling Windows as this is the only 100% sure answer.

If you wish to reformat then please let me know in your next response, I'll now continue with instructions for cleaning.

Please delete the bad files, you may need to make hidden files visible as follows:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Show hidden files and folders
UNCHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Click Yes to confirm and press OK

Use Windows Explorer to find and delete the following files (if present):
C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\j0uiyz6.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\1610154517.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\dh2wxeg.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\1614368533.exe

Download Gmer to your Desktop from here:
http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip
  • Unzip the program onto your Desktop
  • Disconnect from internet and close all running programs
  • Double click gmer.exe, let the gmer.sys driver load if asked
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…say OK
  • If there is no warning, then check that the Rootkit tab is selected and click the Scan button - don't change any settings before you do so
  • Once the scan is complete, click the Copy button
  • Open Notepad and hit Ctrl+V to paste the log and then save the log to your desktop
Once complete, please post the Gmer log and a new HijackThis log

Thanks so much for your help!

You're very welcome :)

I've not heard of that problem before, what process did it flag? You should find this in the detection log.

Can't seem to find the entries in the detection log, though I'm almost positive that it flagged the DSS.exe process

Tell me which entries you wish to remove and I'll help you delete of them.

The blank one, CTDetect, CTDVDDET, CTHELPER, AOLSoftware, IPHSend, iTunesHelper, modremind, msmsgs, GhostTray, nwiz, qttask, DLLML, another blank one, jusched, SNDMon, UpdReg, vidalia, Adobe Gamma Loader, Adobe Reader Speed Launch, Microsoft Office, Privoxy, Ralink Wireless Utility.

All of these are disabled and are just cluttering up msconfig. Surely there's a tool I can use to selectively remove these entries? I don't want you to have to guide me through removing each one individually

Re the infected files, they are very bad news, this is my standard warning for victims of this type of malware:

Deleted. Were not hidden or protected. Don't think they were actually viruses, as they looked like aimbot programs I had used for a game at one point in time. The program randomizes its name to keep from being detected by the game  Anywho they came out with no problems.

Here's my Gmer log…it was so large I would have had to split it into 4 posts, so I just uploaded it to my website instead. http://mwmodders.com/mylog.txt

Those are some suspicious reg entries…!CAUTION! NEVER DELETE OR CHANGE ANY KEY…

Thanks again :wavey:

Hi XeonXT,

The suspicious registry keys you mentioned are related to a copy protection program and not malware so nothing to worry about there.

With regard to the MSConfig entries, you want to delete a lot of them! Generally my advice would be to leave them as they do no harm, but after we have cleaned the malware I'll recommend programs you can use to manage these entries safely.

Please download RegSeeker and save it to your desktop.
  • Right-click on RegSeeker.zip, select Extract All… and follow the prompts to unzip the files into a new folder
  • Inside the RegSeeker folder, double-click RegSeeker.exe to start the program
  • On the left side click Find in registry
  • In the Search for: box type or copy/paste:

    Qldsehiranw

  • Then press the Search ! button.
  • When the search is complete, click the Select button at the bottom, and choose Select all
  • Then click Action and choose Export selected items, click OK and OK the prompt
  • Then, click Find in registry again
  • In the Search for: box type or copy/paste:

    Dtsss94sqp

  • Then press the Search ! button.
  • When the search is complete, click the Select button at the bottom, and choose Select all
  • Then click Action and choose Export selected items, click OK and OK the prompt
  • Close RegSeeker
  • Inside the RegSeeker folder, open the folder called Backup
  • Inside will be two files called schmap-help-m-d-y-123.reg where m-d-y-123 is the date/time of creation.
  • Right-click on each of these files and select Edit
  • Notepad will open with the contents of the files. Copy and paste the contents into your next response.
Note: RegSeeker is a very powerful program and if misused, can render your machine unusable. For this reason, I recommend you do not use any other functions of this program.

Once complete, please post the RegSeeker output and a new HijackThis log.
First search yielded nothing.

Second search yielded:

Hi XeonXT

Sorry for the delay in response, I'm discussing some of the registry entries with my colleagues and I'll be back with you as quickly as possible :)

No problem and no hurry! I'm already blown away by the thoroughness of a free service swamped with requests!
