Hello,

A recent NAV scan identified a Trojan.PWS.QQPass. The file was originally quarantined, which I ended up deleting (hopefully not a huge mistake!? Backup file is also infected, but has been left alone in quarantine). Further NAV scans and Windows LiveOneCare do not identify problems, however I still get blank internet pages (shown as done in lower left corner) especially with email clients as well as microsoft. Tried updating IE Browser to IE 7, but after many attempts and finally getting it, the updated program did not fix problem. Have defragged to help with the recent slow processing, however this has not helped either. I am hoping this log will reveal something??

Hello and welcome to the forums

Open Notepad and turn Word Wrap off.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Next:

Download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware from here and install it. When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, AVG Anti-Spyware will open.

If the program does not automatically update itself during installation, or you are unsure whether it has done so, please do the following:

Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
It is essential that you get the update - keep trying until successful. (Note: If you have problems getting the update, you can download an installer for the full database from here (save it on your desktop). Once you have downloaded the installer, make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed and then double-click on avgas-signatures-full-current.exe to install the database).

Please set up the program as follows:

Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is… click active. This should now
change to inactive.
Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
Click on the Settings tab.
Under How to act? - make sure that Quarantine is selected.
Under How to scan? - All checkboxes should be ticked.
Under Possibly unwanted software - All checkboxes should be ticked.
Under Reports - Select Do not automatically generate reports.
Under What to scan? - Select Scan every file.

Close all open windows.
Do not run a scan yet.

Reboot your computer into SafeMode
You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears.
Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or
programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:

Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab
then click on "Complete System Scan".
ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little
time.
Let the program scan your computer.
When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:
- Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
- Important: Click on the Apply all Actions button (*** This must done before saving the report ***)
- When the program has finished, it will display the message All actions have been applied.
- Then click the Save Scan Report button.
- Click the Save Report as button.
- Save the report to your Desktop.
- Right-click the AVG Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
- Reboot in normal mode and copy the report back to this topic along with a new HijackThis log.

I followed your suggestions and am reposting the new hijack log and AVG report per your direction. Unfortunately, I'm still getting the same issue with email client pages and microsoft pages. Is there something else that may be wrong? Thank you very much for all your help.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

You need to update SunJava.
Updating Java:
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.

Scroll down to where it says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1
The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.

Click the "Download" button to the right.

Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".

Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.

Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.

Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.

Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. It should have the [external image: Posted Image] icon next to it.

Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.

Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.

Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

Then from your desktop double-click on 6-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Once installed you can test to see that it is in fact installed

Ok, i did that and reistalled sun java. the test stated it was installed correctly, but still no change with the blank browser pages. Similarly, the computer is acting really slow now and had much difficulty with this reply and is constantly freezing up, even as i'm attemting to type this. the freezing up is a new problem - since updating to ie 7. the browser problems and send error reports were the reason for the upgrade to ie 7… since the last change, this has gotten worse. help?!

When did you notice the problems? After installing Microsoft Windows OneCare Live maybe?

Basically, we made a bad mistake by downloading and attempting to use the ares program. That was when NAV found the trojan virus, ares program was removed, and the browser problems with send error reports have begun. I downloaded IE 7 to try and "reset" the browser settings, enabling us to use the email clients and secure pages again, but that didn't work. I then downloaded Microsoft's OneCareLive trial to see if that would help clean out the trojan problem, but again that didn't work. I did find a simple/obvious solution to the slow computer problem - remove the wireless network card since we are forced to use dial up now. The network card was picking up neighbor's networks slightly and maybe was confusing it? I'm lost on what is the problem. I assumed the cleaning and java reinstall would fix it, but it hasn't. AVG has found no additional problems. Is there anything else we can try? Thanks again for your help.

If you on dialup I suggest you think about replacing Norton's with a free AVG that will take alot less resources

1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove if listed:

Reboot

If it still doesn't work try this:

Uninstall Internet Explorer 7 to return to Internet Explorer 6 on Windows XP

Click "Start," and then click "Control Panel."
Click "Add or Remove Programs."
Check "Show Updates" at the top of the dialog box.
Scroll down the list and highlight the version of Internet Explorer 7 that you are running, and then click "Change/Remove."

Looks like TeaTimer is stopping our fix:

I notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running. While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with HijackThis fixes. So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:
1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
You can reenable TeaTimer once your system is clean.

Once fix is completed in the all clear post!!

Enable Teatimer

Open Spybot
Click on Tools in bottom left hand corner.
Click on Resident.
Check Resident "TeaTimer" box.
Click on Allow change ONLY to popup box with:
Entry: SpybotSD Teatimer
Click on Mode, select Default mode
Close Spybot

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:
