ok, so i'm a week into trying to fix a laptop of a new girlfriend. it was pretty much impossible to do anything in normal windows mode as it was soooo slow. in safe mode i was able to get rid of a lot of stuff she had on there thru my limited knowledge, stuff I read on here and various utilities I read about on here. I'm at the point now where I can get into normal mode but it still runs incredibly slow and is still very much unusable.

I removed the following files using Vundo which I read about on this forum: cthpycbu.dll, ddcyy.dll, iifdefc.dll, jkklm.dll. One additional file which I can't seem to delete in the several ways I've tried (including with Vundo as read about on here) is fccayya.dll. I don't know that this is all of my problem but it certainly seems to be part of it.

When I first looked at the laptop it gave a message about task manager being disabled by the administrator. I found a script on the web somewhere that took care of that problem but I don't know that the underlying issue is necessarily fixed but I'm hoping someone can confirm or refute that. I cannot install Ad Aware and a few other utilities since I get a message stating that the admin has disabled their installation as well.

When I get into task manager it evidences one of the svchost.exe processes utilizing a large percentage (high 90's at least) of the processor capability. That has been constant since I first laid eyes on the laptop.

Below please find the latest HJT log from the latest version of HJT as recommended on this forum. I noticed that this is the first log that doesn't show fccayya.dll and I'm not sure if that is due to me using the msconfig utility to disable a good amount of extraneous things she had running at startup. I'm not sure if this was a wise thing to do prior to making the log or not but I have a slightly older log or can enable everything again and take a new one if that helps. Please advise.

Any help would be much appreciated and would probably even help my love life somewhat hehe :).

Hi much2fast4u,

First I have some bad news, this computer appears to have been infected by a backdoor trojan. These programs have the ability to steal passwords and other information from your system. If you use your computer for sensitive purposes such as internet banking then I recommend you take the following steps immediately:
  • Use another, uninfected computer to change all your internet passwords, especially ones with financial implications such as banks, paypal, ebay, etc. You should also change the passwords for any other site you use.
  • Call your bank(s), credit card company or any other institution which may be affected and advise them that your login/password or credit card information may have been stolen and ask what steps to take with regard to your account.
  • Consider what other private information could possibly have been taken from your computer and take appropriate steps
This infection can almost certainly be cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it will be impossible to be 100% sure that the machine is clean, if this is unacceptable to you then you should consider reformatting the system partition and reinstalling Windows as this is the only 100% sure answer.

If you wish to reformat then please let me know in your next response, I'll now continue with instructions for cleaning.

You do not appear to be running any antivirus software, or the antivirus program you have doesn't appear to be active. If this is the case, your computer is very vulnerable to infections and your computer may be reinfected before I have a chance to respond to your log.

There are several free packages available, two of the most popular are here:
AVG Antivirus: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
Antivir: http://www.free-av.com/

If you have antivirus software installed, then please activate it. If you have no antivirus program then download and install one of these programs immediately, update the definitions and set it to update automatically. Then do a full system scan and quarantine/delete anything it finds, and make a note of where the logfile is stored so you can post a copy in your next response.

Next, download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Once complete, please post the antivirus scan log if applicable, the SDFix report and a new HijackThis log.
Also, let me know the full path of fccayya.dll e.g. C:\WINDOWS\system32\fccayya.dll
Thanks for the reply _silver_. I have downloaded Sdfix onto a flash drive as I have no way of connecting the laptop to the internet currently. I did install Zone Alarm Security Suite on the computer about a week ago which I ran a scan with very recently although I don't believe a log file was created or if one was I'm unsure of it's location but I will look. It found various problems which it deleted. When I arrive home in about 4 hours I will run Sdfix in safe mode, as instructed, and post the log (report.txt) as well as a new HJT log now that I have used the msconfig utility to allow normal startup again. If I find a Zone Alarm log I will post it as well. I can confirm that fccayya.dll was located at C:\windows\system32\fccayya.dll….I have not looked recently but I will confirm that it still is taking up residence in that location after the most recent virus/adware scan I performed a couple days ago. Thanks again for the help. jeff
hi _silver_,

I looked for fccayya.dll prior to the scans and could not locate it in it's previous location but have not done a full hard drive search as of yet. There also was no Zone Alarm log available but I could do a full scan overnight and see if there is a logging option.

Here is the sdfix log:

Thanks again for your help.

Hi much2fast4u,

Please don't re-enable any programs you have disabled using MSConfig as you could inadvertently re-enable a malware program. We'll use a safe method to take a look at the entries and remove any bad ones.

We'll double-check about fccayya.dll, if it's still there it will be taken care of by the instructions in this post.

First, please download some programs we'll be using to your Desktop (or download them and transfer them using the flash drive):
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTMoveIt.exe
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe
http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/Deckard/dss.exe

Don't run any of these yet!

Now, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines (if present):
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://mini.google-find-it.com/

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Next, double-click OTMoveIt.exe
Select the contents of the below file list, then press Ctrl+C to copy it to the clipboard
In OTMoveIt, click in the left-hand pane and press Ctrl+V to paste the file-list into the program
Then, press MoveIt!
Copy the Results output and paste it into a new notepad file so you can post it in your next response. Do this by clicking in the right-hand pane, press Ctrl-A then Ctrl-C to select all and copy. Then open Notepad, press Ctrl-V to paste in the text, and save this text file to your desktop.

OTMoveIt file list:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Yazzle1549OinAdmin.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Yazzle1549OinUninstaller.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\perfc000.dat
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msdn_lib.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\fccayya.dll

Now reboot the computer

Next, double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C: ), and launch from there.

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user. Further info is available here.

Next use Deckard's System Scanner:
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply
Once complete, please post the OTMoveIt report, the SmitfraudFix report and both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you. Please check your post isn't cut off any use multiple posts if necessary.
hi silver, i am about to begin the instructions below but i just wanted to clarify that i havent reenabled any programs thru msconfig recently but days ago that i had disabled a few days prior to that in an attempt to speed up the computer enough that i could run a virus scan. it didn't help so i enabled them again but have not enabled anything since any of the logs i have posted here. i'm off to carry out your instructions. jeff
ok i found all the lines in hijackthis and fixed them. there was an error on perfc000.dat which I will paste prior to the logs:

An unexpected error has occurred at procedure: modBackup_MakeBackup(sItem=O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\perfc000.dat)
Error #5 - Invalid procedure call or argument

Please email me at [removed], reporting the following:
* What you were trying to fix when the error occurred, if applicable
* How you can reproduce the error
* A complete HijackThis scan log, if possible

Windows version: Windows NT 5.01.2600
MSIE version: 7.0.5730.11
HijackThis version: 1.99.1

This message has been copied to your clipboard.
Click OK to continue the rest of the scan.

Move It Log:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Yazzle1549OinAdmin.exe moved successfully.

Hi much2fast4u,

First, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Next, download ComboFix to your desktop
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • Note: Do not click ComboFix's window while it's running - it may cause it to stall!
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you, please post it in your next response.
Then, use OTMoveIt to remove more bad files:
Double-click OTMoveIt.exe
Select the contents of the below file list, then press Ctrl+C to copy it to the clipboard
In OTMoveIt, click in the left-hand pane and press Ctrl+V to paste the file-list into the program
Then, press MoveIt!
Copy the Results output and paste it into a new notepad file so you can post it in your next response. Do this by clicking in the right-hand pane, press Ctrl-A then Ctrl-C to select all and copy. Then open Notepad, press Ctrl-V to paste in the text, and save this text file to your desktop.

OTMoveIt file list:

Press Submit - this will submit the file for testing.
Please copy and paste the results in your next response.

Once complete, please post the Smitfraudfix log, the Combofix log, the OTMoveIt log, the Jotti results and a new HijackThis log.
hi silver, I will complete these tasks once I get home from the office in about 8 or 9 hours, however I'm not sure how to complete the jotti scan as I don't have internet access on this laptop currently.
Hi,

With regard to the Jotti upload, I'd prefer not to take the risk of infecting another machine by asking you to handle an infected file on a clean machine without special precautions. Are you able to make a password-protected zip file on the infected machine?

If so, zip it up with the password INFECTED, then transfer it to an internet-connected machine and email it to me at this address:
much2fast4u.5.silvermru at spamgourmet.com (change " at " to @)

If you do this, you should delete the sent email and the file as well as emptying your recycle bin immediately after it's sent.

Please do not under any circumstances move it from the infected machine unless it is already inside a password-protected zip file. If you have any problems with doing this let me know and we'll sort something else out.
yes i should be able to do that. i have the latest version of zipmagic installed on the laptop and im sure i can figure out how to create a password protected zip file though i've never done so. so assuming it has that option, i will email it and post the logs after following the other instructions. that will be about 8 hours from now. thanks, jeff
hi silver,

i will email the encrypted, zipped file after i post this reply. password is in lowercase characters if it is case sensitive.

I will email the file now. Please note that the original file is still on the infected PC as there were no explicit instructions saying to delete it. Please advise.

Thanks, jeff
Hi,

I'm looking over the logs now, but haven't received the email yet - I don't know why this has happened…

If you still have it then please re-send it and/or upload it at http://www.mediafire.com (no registration required) and post the download link (Sharing URL) for me.

Please also post a new HijackThis log
