I installed STOPzilla today (which seems like a great program).. it isolated, deleted, quarantined - etc - all sorts of stuff. However, the pop ups still get through, and eventually all the things that STOPzilla "froze" gets back through again.

I could really use some help (been here before, but can't remember how I got rid of this stuff the last time).

Thanks!!!

Hi! Welcome to the Tom Coyote forums.
My name is Scotty. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research.
Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
My posts to you will be checked by one of the Forum Admins, so my replies may take a little longer.
Hi Scotty! Thanks for replying to my post!

Some things have changed since posting — stopzilla has "sort of" kicked in. I like that it provides a toolbar on my browser (bumped IE from being my default browser) – as my problems stem from having 2 teens now on summer break
and stopzilla provides a secure search tool. I think what's happened is that the kids go to ad infested sites - try to manually remove pop ups that my blocker doesn't zap first, and in doing so, actually OPEN the ad site unintentionally.

Anyway..
I've run ATF (first changing defaults in my computer/view/hidden files)… I've run vundofix out of curiosity - and it did not find anything. I've installed combofix as well just in case I was asked to do so.

I "fixed" a few things via HJT as well… but only a few things, nothing dramatic.

This morning when I went to my computer, the screen was black. I wiggled the mouse, which usually wakes it up, and it had no effect (which made me nervous). I restarted the computer, and things seemed to start back up normally.

Here is my most recent HJT logfile (below).

Thank you so much for taking a look at all this….
~Kim

Hi Kim

Lets run Combofix.

Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply with another HijackThis log.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

If you still have the Vundofix log could I see that too?
Here you go!

Vundo Fix:
"Done searching for Files. No infected files were found."
(provided no log?)

NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Reboot into SAFE MODEBy pressing the F8 key right when Windows starts, usually right after you hear your computer
beep when you reboot it (some versions of windows will display 'Starting Windows' with a grey progress bar)
you will be brought to a menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode.

If it does not work on the first try, reboot and try again, as you have to be quick when you press it.

I have found that during boot up, right after the computer displays the equipment , memory, etc
installed on your computer, if you start lightly tapping the F8 key, the system will usually display the menu.

To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:
  • Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
  • Double-click on the My Computer icon (or click Start, then select My Computer)
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • After the new window appears select the View tab.
  • Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
  • Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.
Use Explorer to navigate to and delete the following files and/or folders (if they are present):

Files:
  • C:\WINNT\system32\o02PrEz
  • C:\Program Files\TTC.dll
  • C:\WINNT\system32\S1
  • C:\WINNT\system32\S2
  • C:\WINNT\system32\S6
  • C:\WINNT\system32\S7
  • C:\WINNT\system32\iubmwni.dll
  • C:\WINNT\system32\mjdsregn.exe
  • C:\WINNT\system32\winpfz32.sys
  • C:\WINNT\system32\wvuuvtt.dll
  • C:\WINNT\system32\rrutv.bak1

Folders:
  • C:\VundoFix Backups

Post back with a new HijackThis log and let me know how your computer is behaving now.
Followed your instructions for ATF/SAFE MODE/Removing files/folders…

On reboot, STOPzilla ran - and detected the following:

Virtumonde (Virtumundo-Vundo B.)

Zeno Browser Enhancer

STOPzilla is still scanning as I type this… (full scan, so it's slow going).

I noticed on the HJT Scan that C:\WINNT\system32\mjdsregn.exe is still present (it's from the list you gave me to erase, which I thought I did). Should I reboot in safe mode and try again to delete it?

HJT log below…
Thanks!
~Kim

PS: I've downloaded the FixVundo program from Symantec, and am going to try to remove Vundo.B that way (Not so sure STOPzilla can do it, since tihs is the 2nd time it's detected and tried to remove it). STOPzilla has now found 2 more malware items: Web Buying (which I can't seem to get rid of) and Desktop Highjacker (sounds lovely – also cannot seem to get rid of this).

Will update you on whether or not I was successful with removing Vundo.

Hi Kim

Close all windows and browsers.
Open HijackThis

Click on Open Misc Tools
Click on Delete a File On Reboot
Click once on the file below to select it:
C:\WINNT\system32\mjdsregn.exe

Click on the Back button to exit.

Now, back at the main screen of HijackThis, proceed to Scan.
and put a check at this line.
O4 - Startup: TA_Start.lnk = C:\WINNT\system32\mjdsregn.exe

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "FIX Checked".

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HJT log into your next reply.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Scotty..
Start up was sluggish still, but I'm going to restart one more time (after a stopzilla scan) and see if it's a little more on target.

HJT log below…

Thanks again for your help!

~Kim

Hi Kim

You are clean now but before I gave you my all clean speech Ill see if I can speed up your startup.

Click on Start then Run and type in msconfig and press OK.
In the window that opens click on the Startup tab.

Uncheck these items
ctfmon, Quicktime task, iTunes Helper, Adobe Reader Speed Launcher, MMTray, Microsoft Works Update and HPAiODevice.

These are unnecessary to the running of your computer and can be launched manually when needed.

When finished press apply then OK and you will have to reboot. On restart you will be presented with a window telling you you have made changes. Put a check in the box and click OK. Try rebooting again and let me know if things have improved.

I understand – and apologize for the delay – but if your computer's not working, then there's no way to reply.

I performed the fixes that Scotty suggested… and everything seemed fine – I'd like to thank Scotty for his help/advice! I'm grateful for it, and wanted to be sure to let him know this – so thank you for reopening this thread so I would have the opportunity.

The issues I'm having with my computer are complete and ZERO memory error messages that have made it impossible to open my browser, outlook express, etc… and STOPzilla is conflicting with WINDOWS UPDATES (all of them, including WINDOWS DEFENDER updates)… I've got my hands full at the moment.

Anyway, my thanks for all the help. I'm going to post a final HJT log just in case anyone sees something that could be related to the "other" computer issues I'm having now.

Much thanks,
Kim
