Recently Revived System Still Has Virus Issues

I recently restored an older HP 750n Pavilion PC that I had thought died a horrible death. After doing a system restore and a few upgrades I have since put it on a wireless home network using ATT/Yahoo! DSL.

At first I needed to get Windows XP up to speed as this system has been out of commission for about two years. Lot's of time spent online at MicroSoft updating the software for XP, IE and at HP Support for all the other stuff. I had lost most of my documents, pictures and any new software programs that I had loaded (no backup, yikes!) while performing the complete system recovery.

Today I decided to give Mozilla Firefox a try after hearing tales of terror using IE 7.0. I have now made it my default browser on this computer. Also I haven't had ANY online protection installed. I downloaded the ATT Yahoo! Online Protection provided by my DSL service today.

Now I fear that I have waited way too late as I did both the anti-spy and anti-virus scans and uncovered a trojan as well as several viruses. All but one were deleted. I'm currently using the Windows XP Firewall until a better suggestion is offered. I also ran the latest version of CCleaner program before HJT scan

I still cannot believe that I went this long before running ANY scan protection!! Please feel free to address me as Homer J. Simpson!! Any help from you good folks would be greatly appreciated.

hi Tom T, dont see any malware in the log. about all you can do is scan with antivirus/antimalware apps, which you have done. what antimalware software do you have installed? when is a firewall not a firewall? when its windows firewall! i can give some choices if you want. shelf life

Sorry I've taken so long to respond and of course I'd be happy to hear any suggestions regarding firewalls.

I just finished doing what was suggested to do BEFORE posting a HJT log on my newer (main) HP a1350n Pavilion PC. Nothing horrific so far as I can tell. I also generated a startuplist in the HJT misc tools, also listing the minor and empty sections.

I noticed in the HJT log there were at least three items showing "missing file" in quotation marks.

In the startuplist.txt there were a few items of concern. It checked for superhidden file extensions and found several. Some indicating, "arrow overlay:yes" and some "arrow overlay: NO!" YIKES!

In the Enumerating Windows NT/2000/XP services of the startuplist.txt there were seven items showing "disabled". Again, YIKES!


You asked what I'm currently using for computer protection. The AT&T Yahoo Online Protection has Anti-Virus by Computer Associates and their own Anti-Spy. Also along with the Windows Security Center is "Norton Security Center" to complement Windows' "Firewall".

I have an expired trial version of Simply Super Software's Trojan Remover that still runs during startup.

I have a current version of CCleaner.

And as of today I now have current versions of ATF Cleaner, Spybot S & D, Ad-Aware SE Personal ( which I had to do a net search to find the Build 1.06 version) and AVG Anti-Spyware on both computers.

My default Browser is Mozilla Firefox on both PCs


I heard that running 2 or more anti-spy programs can slow things down. Right now I want to tackle one thing at a time in improving both systems performances.

Any input from you would be greatly appreciated. I will include the AVG log, the HJT log and for grins and giggles I'll include the startuplist.txt for this computer.

the hjt log looks fine as far as malware goes. dont see anyhting to worry about in the log, the avg report of the startup list log.

you need a antivirus and one or two (maximum) malware scanners. alot of people equate quanity in software with protection, not so. piling on more software isnt the answer. full "story" on my website, linked to below.
