Hi,

So far I tried To run F-Secure Antivirus, AVG Free Edition, Ad Aware, Spyboot and Spyboot and they don;t reconigse anything although I can see a lot of ramdom popups coming up in a new browser as I go from one site to another. I ran Hijack This and deleted some of the most suspicious entries, but still have them, Could any one suggest me anything based on the information on this log?

Many thanks

Daniel

Welcome Daniel,

A previous post of yours has been closed so I need you to follow through on this one.

I ran Hijack This and deleted some of the most suspicious entries, but still have them,

You should not have done this before posting, removing the wrong entries can make your system inoperable, you also may have removed entries that could have told me what your infected with. <_<

Go to C:\Program Files\HijackThis and open the folder and right click on the HJT Icon, (looks like a red stick of dynamite with a plunger) and rename it to Scanner.exe. <– Don't forget the .exe and post a new log.
Hi Ken,

Thanks for having a look into this, I know was A mistake trying deleting some f the enties in the Hijack This scan results, but apparently I didn't get rid of anything important as the system is running as normal exept from the anoying popups.

I have done what you adviced me and here is the new log:

Any guidance would be highly appreciated. Thanks

Dan

I am going to take a shot in the dark here and have you run the fix for Vundo, make sure you have it scan for files first then remove them if it finds any. Post the report for me to see. It won't hurt anything if Vundo is not present by running the scan.

Download VundoFix to your desktop
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

Then run the trial of AVG Anti Spyare, its critical that I see the report so be sure to follow the instructions to the letter.

Make sure you follow these instructions correctly to Remove or Quarantine what it finds and also to save the report, without me seeing the report my hands are tied.
Download and install the 30 day trial of AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 to your desktop. It's very important that I see the report so make sure you follow the instructions and save the log.
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
  • Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <– Dont forget this
  • Under Reports
  • Select Automatically generate report after every scan
  • Un-Select Only if threats were found
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 <– Do not run the scan yet.
Boot your computer into Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
  • This will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
  • Then press the Enter on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
  • AVG will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
  • Next select the Reports icon at the top.
  • Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system <–Don't forget this
  • make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important, I need to see that log.
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5
Let me see the AVG Report, the Vundofix report and a New HJT log please.
Hello Ken,

Thanks for your detailed response, apologies I can't always come back straight after your reply, way busy at work!

Unfortunatelly I wasn't able to run AVG Anti Spyware 7.5 on safe mode, I've got the following error message: "Connection to the service failed", however I can operate it without problems on normal Windows mode, I tried reinstailing it twice but the results are the same. Can I maybe use another Spyware detection tool?

I tried switching off the computer several time and running it on safe mode and safe mode with networking but the message is always the same.

On the other hand I managed to run Vundo Fix and it didn't detect anything in anyway I am attaching the log generated and a new Hijack This log. I'll keep trying to see if I can run AVG Anti Spayware 7.5 in the mean time.

Again, many thanks for your help.

Daniel,

When you install AVG Anti Spyware, you need to check for updates in Normal windows with an internet connection. If it times out then the server is busy. Then boot to Safemode to run the scan, if you still have no luck then try to run it in normal windows and forget the updates if you can't connect.

Can't read your log the way you posted it, do it this way.
  • Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
  • Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
  • Go to Edit> Select All…..Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread.
Run these two programs.

Download and Save Blacklight to your desktop:
  • Double-click blbeta.exe
  • Then accept the agreement
  • Click > scan then > next
  • You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).
  • Copy and paste this log in your next reply.
  • Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"

Run Panda's ActiveScan from here and perform a full system scan.
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the "Scan your PC" button
  • A new window will open…click the big "Check Now" button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It will take a couple minutes)
  • If you are on a slow connection it will take about 15 minuites for the scanner to load.
  • Click on "Local Disks" to start the scan
  • Once scan is done, click "see report" then "save report"
  • Save the log someplace you can find
  • 12. Reboot
  • Post the Panda scan results in your next reply

I need to see the Blacklight report, the Panda report and New HJT log and the AVG Report if you can run it. Take your time, there is no rush. I will keep this thread open for you for a week or so.
Hi Ken, I think that the problem is fixed now! I have sent the HT log to one of the IT guys in the company I work for and he spotted a dodgy entry which we deleted, and after that everything came back to normal, That was yesterday and I haven't had any more pop ups since then and there hasn't been any problems with the overall performance in my computer. I really want to appreaciate all your time and help on this issue, I can try to find out what was deleted if this can help you. All the best, Dan
Hi Ken

Sorry, my mistake, they didn't delete anything from the registry. I am pasting here part of his response:

I went into msconfig and stopped a few strange looking processes from starting automatically when windows starts.

If I manage to find out more about what processes they meant I'll let you know, it is usually hard to get hold of the IT people here, they are usually hectic solving network issues.

Thanks

Dan
Thanks Dan,

Glad your doing well

  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
Thanks for stopping by Tom Coyote , I'm glad I was able to help you. :D
Thanks Ken, Your help and patience has been invaluable! I've got most of all those programmes, unfortuantely I need IE for most of the things I do here at work. Hoever I use FF for everything else. All the best, Daniel
My wife loves IE7 and I use Firefox myself most of the time, but some of the online scans won't work with FF, but there improving that browser all the time.

Since this is resolved I am going to close this thread. If your problem pops up again just start a new topic.
