I got AntiWinSpyware or winfix popups when I use IE. I don't get it when using FireFox. I have tried various antispyware programs, but nothing seems to work.

  • Hello, and welcome to the forum.

My name is Simon V., and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happens.
I am currently looking over your log. As I am a trainee, everything that I post to you must be checked by an Admin or Moderator. Thus, there may be a tiny bit of a delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long. I will post back shortly with a potential fix.

Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Hi Canuck,

    Rename HijackThis
  • Please right-click on HijackThis.exe and choose Rename. Rename it to Scanner.exe.

    VundoFix
  • Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
    • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
    • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
    • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
    • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES.
    • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
    • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
    • A logfile will be saved at C:\vundofix.txt.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

    Report Back
  • Please post the reports from Vundofix, along with a new HijackThis (Scanner) log in your next reply.
Done, here are the reports you requested.
The only additional thing to mention is that once the system rebooted the second time, I got an error loading message, at system32/ycgggyw.dll which is one of the Vundo's that was removed.

  • Hi Canuck,

    No Anti-Virus
  • You aren't running Anti-Virus Software. Please download and install one of them first.

Use an Anti-Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs: Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus

Update your Anti-Virus Software - It is very important that you update your Anti-Virus software at least once a week (even more if you wish). If you do not update your Anti-Virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

    No Firewall
  • Use a Firewall - Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. If you use the Windows Firewall you might think that's sufficient but it only controls one way of the traffic (inbound/outbound not sure). Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls

    Run VundoFix
    • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
    • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
    • Once the scan is complete, Right Click inside the listbox (white box) and click add more files
    • Copy&Paste the entries below into the boxes:
      • C:\WINDOWS\system32\pcqtolpm.dll
    • Click Add Files and click Close Window.
    • Click the Remove Vundo button.
    • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
    • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
    • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
    • A report will be saved at C:\vundofix.txt
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

    Uninstall Programs
  • Click on Start, then Control Panel. Double click on Add or Remove Programs.

    Please remove the following programs:
    • Starware Reference Toolbar
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    Fix Entries with HijackThis
  • Open HijackThis, perform a scan and put a check next to the following items (if present):

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C368C529-41A3-4523-A23F-1059330D11C2} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pcqtolpm.dll

Close all programs except HijackThis and click on Fix checked.

    Update Java
  • Download and install Java Runtime Environment Version 6u1.

    Run Kaspersky Online Scan
  • Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

    Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
    Click Yes.
    • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
    • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
    • Now click on Scan Settings
    • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
      • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
      • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives Scan Mail Bases
    • Click OK
    • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
    • The program will start and scan your system.
    • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
    • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
      • Now click on the Save as Text button:
    • Save the file to your desktop.
    Report Back
  • Please post the reports from the Kasperksy Online Scan and VundoFix, along with a new HijackThis log in your next reply, and tell me how everything is working.
I did not think I needed a firewall software as I am behind a router. I have Outpost now and AVG installed.
Here are the latest results.

  • Hi Canuck,

I have a second pc on the same network, should I check it as well? It does not appear to have any problems, be we do pass files back and forth now and then.

You can post the log in this topic if you want me to check it, or start another topic :)

    Prevention
  • Congratulations, your log looks clean. Please advise of any problems you are still experiencing, or follow these simple steps to keep your computer clean in the future:
    • Delete Tools - You can now delete the following files/folders:
      • VundoFix.exe, and C:\VundoFix Backups\
    • Disable and Enable System Restore - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
      • Turn off System Restore.
      • On the desktop, right-click My Computer
      • Click Properties
      • Click the System Restore tab
      • Check Turn off System Restore
      • Click Apply, and then click OK
      • Reboot.
      • Turn on System Restore.
      • On the desktop, right-click My Computer
      • Click Properties
      • Click the System Restore tab
      • Uncheck Turn off System Restore
      • Click Apply, and then click OK
NOTE: only do this ONCE, NOT on a regular basis!
    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure
      • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      • Click once on the Security tab.
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt.
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable.
      • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable.
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt.
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt.
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt.
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your Anti-Virus Software - It is very imprtant that you update your Anti-Virus software at least once a week (even more if you wish). If you do not update your Anti-Virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://update.microsoft.com/ regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. An article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

The infection you had was Vundo.
This weekend I have been working on 12 hour night shifts. I'll post the log for the second pc here tomorrow afternoon, as I have no time today. Thanks a lot for you help Simon, very much appreciated. Tom
Hi Simon, No, I think the other computer looks fine, I had just put together a third one this past week. Should I post a Hyjackthis log anyways, just to be sure? I don't want to impose to much, you have helped me tremendously already. I have bookmarked this page for quick reference :) Thanks again :)
Hi Canuck, As you said before, you have transfered files from the infected computer to the second one. Although unlikely, it could be that computer has an infection too (absence of symptoms doesn't mean it's clean). It's your choice; a clean HijackThis log doesn't take long to analyze, so it isn't much of a problem for me ;)
Ok than, I may was well take u up on your offer :)

Since I just built a third computer using mostly parts left over after some hardware upgrades, I may as well include it also.

Thanks
  • Hi Canuck,

Looking good, although you have no anti-virus software nor a firewall installed on either computer.

    Then for Computer #1:

    Fix Entries with HijackThis
  • Open HijackThis, perform a scan and put a check next to the following items (if present):

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Close all programs except HijackThis and click on Fix checked.

    For Computer #2:

    Fix Entries with HijackThis
  • Open HijackThis, perform a scan and put a check next to the following items (if present):

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {761497BB-D6F0-462C-B6EB-D4DAF1D92D43} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Close all programs except HijackThis and click on Fix checked.

    Update Java
  • Your Java software is out of date. Follow these instructions to update it:
    • Go to Start and click on Control Panel, then double-click on Add or Remove Programs.
    • Search for previously installed versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment), and remove it. It should have this icon next to it: [external image: Posted Image]
    • Then download and install Java Runtime Environment Version 6u1.
  • Follow the advice given in my “Prevention Speech” for all your computers and you should never be back again :D
