Trojan

Hi,
I have tried getting rid of a trojan, Generic BackDoor, that has infected my computer but the trojan kept coming back. This is what I Have done so far:

As per Macafee, I disabled System Restore, scanned with macafee's Virus Scan, scanned again with AVGAS spyware, and the trojan was removed. When I rebooted it came right back.
Trojan's file C:\Windows\System32\Perfc000.dat
Avg removed tracking cookies, a file for the trojan, Backdoor.Small.OS, but it ignored the following, which I believe is contributting to the popping up of the trojan (I am guessing about this): Adware. WindowEnhancer; Adware.Wildtangent and Adware.Minibug.

I am using Windows XP.

I was refered to Highjackit by Mcafee, and have scanned using Highjackit, here is the HJT log:

Hello and Welcome to the forum.

As per Macafee, I disabled System Restore,

That's one of the dumbest things to do. I have no idea why McAfee and Symantec (Norton's) have users do that. A bad restore point is better then no restore point. Once your pc is clean, then you create a clean restore point.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.


Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.


1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove if listed:
SpywareBot <–Spyware remover of somewhat dubious repute


Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you, combofix.txt.Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Hi,
I scanned my computer using the combofix.exe, but it got stuck while doing the report log. I had abort and therefore is unable to post the combofix.txt file. I have posted below a new HJT log.

I also enabled the System Restore before I did the scan. Everything went OK until the report log was being produced.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.


1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove if listed:
SpywareBot


Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C68AE9C0-0909-4DDC-B661-C1AFB9F5AE53} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SpywareBot] C:\Program Files\SpywareBot\SpywareBot.exe -boot

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"


Delete these Files if listed:
C:\ComboFix\29389.cfexe
C:\Program Files\SpywareBot\SpywareBot.exe

Delete these Folders if listed:
C:\ComboFix
C:\Program Files\SpywareBot



Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.


Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Hi, I looked on my in C:\ and found the log that Combofix posted. I will post it below and also a copy of the last HJT log that I posted. My computer is running OK now, but I am unable to upload any of my photographs from my camera on to it. The import function is not working. I think I may have to reinstall the program. This started happening when I contracted the trojan. Combofix text file: I am unable to copy the combofix.txt file. Here is how I got to it: I opened MY Computer and clicked to the C drive icon. A number of files came up which included the Combofix.txt file. I right clicked on that file and hit the copy function then tried posting it here. The paste prompt is greyed out.

Hi,
Thank you for the help.

I ran the AFT Cleaner. My computer restarted OK, but the icons in the systems tray was a bit slow in coming back on. They are all there now. I check a couple of the programs I use and they were also fine. So, I can say my computer is operating very well. I also looked at the files on the C drive and found these two: ComboFix.txt, a MS-DOS batch file (so it says) and Combofix-quarantined-files, a text document. What do I do with these?

ComboFix.txt, a MS-DOS batch file (so it says) and Combofix-quarantined-files

Delete both.

Do this if all is OK:

You can remove any programs / Tools I had you install. Use Add/Remove Programs to remove if listed there otherwise just delete them and empty recycle bin.

Log looks good :D


You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.



If you dont have any programs like these, I would recommend that you get them.

Also get a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Do not use Ad-aware if you have McAfee's VirusScan and AntiSpyware
