System runs extremely slow. Can't go into Yahoo mail at all. All it does is keep flashing on & off but surfing is fine. When I go into Accessories -System Tools- System information -Software Environment -Startup Programs, I have tons. When I say tons I mean I copied & pasted the list into MS Word & got 82 pages of stuff that makes no sense whatsoever. A couple of weeks ago I ran Symantec's online scan because Mcafee never found anything. Symantec said I had a, backdoor.bifrose attached to a couple of files. So I uninstalled Mcafee & bought Norton Anti-virus 2007 so I could get rid of this. Ran the program & it never found anything. Don't know what's going on there. But the system doesn't run right. Our other computer runs find with the same & lots more programs on it. I would paste the list of Startup programs if it weren't so long. The other computer only has about 20 in it's list.

hi tmack,

So I uninstalled Mcafee & bought Norton Anti-virus 2007

its possible for software to have false positives or flag harmless leftovers. was the computer slow before you installed norton? it might be the resource hog.
look in add/remove progrmas panel and uninstall anything you dont use/need. if your not sure leave it for now.

see alot of icons by the clock? click to open the software and see what its, most are not needed at start up but can be started manually when needed. with the software open look for any preferences/options etc for it not to start with windows.

download and run atfcleaner:
http://www.atribune....tent/view/19/2/

start hjt click on "open misc tools section"
click on "open uninstall manager"
click on "save list"
save the list somewhere and post it in next reply

hi tmack,

thanks for the list. looks like a typical commercial computer. do you use quicktime or real player or music jukebox? you could remove them via add/remove programs panel. other than that dont see much, really looking for what might be malware. was the computer slow with macafee on there also.
there are some ways to control what starts with windows by using the msconfig utility. read thru this link:

Yes. It's been slow since we took it over from my son when he went to college & got a laptop. We uninstalled all of his games & rpg games & everything that when with. All his pics & music. We cleaned up everything. It has run slower but not like this since Window Registry was installed & ran but I made sure nothing major was wiped & I've even restored the cleanup done just in case. I've checked the msconfig a couple of times but I'll look over the list on that website to make sure. But it still isn't explaining why when I go to Yahoo mail it won't come up. I have to check my mail on our other comp. I can surf some but I'm on the other one now because this time it wouldn't let me reply on the screweduup comp.
