I'm checking afriends PC that is running slow and has occasional problems connecting to an external USB hard drive. To the best of my (and spybot's) knowledge there is nothing particuarly naughty on the system and it may just be slow due to a number of tray applications.

I'd be grateful if someone could check the following HijackThis log

Thanks

Hi Neff,

I can't see any malware in your log, that doesn't however mean that the machine is clean so we'll do a couple of scans to check:

Please run an online scan with Panda Activescan:
Open this page in Internet Explorer:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button.
A new window will open…click the Check Now button.
Enter your Country, State/Province, enter an e-mail address and click Send.
Select either Home User or Company.
Click the big Scan Now button.
If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it.
It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan.
When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the ActiveScan report.

Please download F-Secure Blacklight (blbeta.exe):
http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/try_blacklight.html
  • Click I ACCEPT and download the graphical user interface version to your Desktop
  • Double click the file to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
  • It will create the fsbl-xxxxxxx.log on your desktop.
  • The log will have a list of all items found.
  • Do not choose to rename any yet! I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present.
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.
Once complete, please post the Panda Activescan log, the Blacklight scan and a new HijackThis log.
Thank you - The Activescan log is below…

Backlight didn't detect anything and didn't seem to create a log (unless I missed it)

And the second HijackThis log is at the end

Hi Neff,

Panda found a couple of items which we'll clean up now:

Backup Your Registry with ERUNT:
  • Download erunt.zip to your Desktop from here:
    http://aumha.org/downloads/erunt.zip
  • Right-click erunt.zip, select Extract All… and follow the prompts to extract ERUNT to a new folder on your Desktop
  • Inside the new folder, double-click ERUNT.exe to start the program
  • OK all the prompts to back up your registry to the default location.
Note: to restore your registry, go to the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

Then, open Notepad (press Start->Run, enter notepad and press OK)
Copy everything inside the code box below (Starting with REGEDIT4) and paste it into a new notepad file.
Change the Save As Type to All Files and save it as fix.reg to your Desktop.

Note: Please copy and paste all the text at once, and check that there is NO blank line above REGEDIT4 and one blank line at the bottom.
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{147A976E-EEE1-4377-8EA7-4716E4CDD239}]
Locate fix.reg on your Desktop, if you did it right it should look like this:[external image: Posted Image]
Double-click it, when it asks if you want to merge with the registry, click Yes.

Make hidden/system files and folders visible:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Show hidden files and folders
UNCHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Click Yes to confirm and press OK

Use Windows Explorer to find and delete the following files (if present):
C:\Windows\system32\up100.exe
C:\Windows\downloaded program files\f3initialsetup1.0.0.15.inf
C:\Windows\downloaded program files\msa64chk.inf

And then another scan:

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply
Once complete, please post the DSS reports, you don't need to post another HijackThis log as the DSS report contains a HijackThis log.
Thanks for the continuing help. Sorry for the delay this is the first time I've got back round to the house with the PC.

The registry is updated, the files are deleted and the scans are below

Hi Neff,

Open HijackThis and choose Open the Misc Tools section
Press the Open Uninstall Manager button and scroll down the list to this entry:

Zone Addon

Highlight it and press the Delete this entry button
Close HijackThis

Press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:

cmd /c copy c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts "%userprofile%\desktop\hosts.txt"

A file called hosts.exe should appear on your desktop, please post the contents of this file in your next response.

You have several P2P file sharing programs installed - eMule, uTorrent and BitTorrent. These program do not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but P2P file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I recommend you remove them, but of course the choice is down to you.

Once complete, please post the contents of the hosts.txt file and a new HijackThis log.
Hi, How are you getting on? If the instructions are unclear or something isn't working, please let me know before proceeding.
There's no particular problem, it's just the computer owner has been away and busy so I haven't had a chance to sit down with them. Thanks for your patience.
Zone Addon has gone

Here is the hosts file (which looks pretty compromised to me)

Content-Type: text/plain; name="hosts.txt"; format=flowed

Hi Neff,

Let's sort the hosts file:

Please download HostXpert.
  • Unzip HostsXpert.zip
  • Double click on HostsXpert.exe
  • Then click on Restore Original Hosts to restore your Hosts file to the default
  • Click on Make Hosts Read Only to secure it against changes
  • Close program when complete.
Re-hide hidden/system files and folders:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Do not show hidden files and folders
CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Press OK

You can now delete fsbl.exe, erunt.zip, dss.exe, fix.reg HostsXpert.zip and hosts.txt from your Desktop.

At this stage I think your machine is clean of malware. If the machine is still exhibiting the original symptoms I think it's likely the cause is non-malware related. If however you have specific reason to believe this machine is infected do let me know.

One cause of the problems could be the Kontiki application, this program has appeared in a number of cases where users report a slowdown. See this page for some information and a link to removal instructions:
http://www.castlecops.com/o23list-1857.html

Some tips to help you stay clean:

Operating system vulnerabilities can easily be exploited by malware so please ensure your operating system is automatically kept up to date by using Windows Update:
Go to Start->Control Panel->Automatic Updates
Select Automatic and select a suitable schedule

You have plenty of protection software installed however please ensure it is kept up to date. Check that your antivirus and antispyware programs are set to automatically update themselves daily, and that your firewall is the latest version.

Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
If you install this, be sure to follow the DNS Client service instructions before doing so.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.
