Alternatively, I could create the notepad file on my computer, which works fine, copy it to a CD and from there paste it to the desktop in the sick computer.

Still the same:
On IE 7, the attempt to load a page like Yahoo.com yields "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage. Most likely causes…."
On Firefox, the attempt yields "The connection was reset. The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading. …"

Lets try this: Uninstall Internet Explorer 7 to return to Internet Explorer 6 on Windows XP Click "Start," and then click "Control Panel." Click "Add or Remove Programs." Check "Show Updates" at the top of the dialog box. Scroll down the list and highlight the version of Internet Explorer 7 that you are running, and then click "Change/Remove."

Hi; It went back to IE6, which worked for 30 seconds. I was able to connect to google and do a search. The next attempt, to Yahoo failed as before, with a 404. I removed the entries to Panda as instructed. Upon reboot, the panda icon still showed up in the system tray, and then disappeared after I told it not to send a report to MS. I rebooted and IE worked again for 30 seconds before failing as before. Meanwhile, autoupdate loaded a bunch of updates and is prompting me to install them.

Install the updates if you can. Are you sure the modem / router and ethernet card are good in this PC?

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.


(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Next:

Download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your
desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop
    and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition
    files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "
    Update now    " link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a
      progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of
    the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then
    select " "Quarantine" .".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG Anti-Spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
  • Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting
    your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears.

    Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
    IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or
    programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab
    then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little
    time.
    Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all
    actions    "
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the
    screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where
    you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the
    results of the AVG Anti-Spyware report scan along with a new HijackThis log.

Sorry for bailing out of this session last night while AVG was running. Company showed up unexpectedly. BTW, which apps? did you post on Sysinternal?

I ran AVG exactly as instructed, and it discovered a long list of cookies, all rated "medium" threat level. This, despite having cleared all cookies etc. using disk manager. However, when I went to retrieve the log it said that "no log has been created".

I just noticed that the Panda references are still there, despite my having used HJT to remove them. Is that a clue? Have they been added again by this trojan?

We need to make sure all the services are disabled:

Click Start > Run > and type in:

services.msc

Click OK.

In the services window find (PAVFNSVR) Panda Function Service
Right click and choose "Properties". On the "General" tab under "Service
Status" click the "Stop" button to stop the service. Beside "Startup Type"
in the dropdown menu select "Disabled". Click Apply then OK.

Do the same for these:
(PAVSRV) Panda anti-virus service
(pmshellsrv) Panda Antispam Engine
(PNMSRV) Panda Network Manager
(PSIMSVC) Panda IManager Service
(TPSrv) Panda TPSrv

Exit the Services utility.



Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Hi;

Thanks for continuing to help me. I removed all the Panda references and they no longer show up in the system tray at bootup. They are also absent from the HJT logfile.

Both broswers continue to abort their downloads, although the Firefox browser loads the Smith Barney page, waiting for logon, however, it will not load any other page.
