Do you want a fresh HJT?
I was hoping to see more bad stuff.

1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove if listed:
RXToolBar
Semantic Insight

Delete these Files if listed:
C:\ALCXMNTR.EXE
C:\TPEXC.BIN
C:\Program Files\RXToolBar\Semantic Insight\SemanticInsight.exe

Delete these Folders if listed:
C:\SUCCESSP <–Unless you know what it is.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi;

Both browsers continue to fail. The IE7 has its home page set to blank, but entering a URL leads to a Server not found message. Firefox is a little different. My friend has an account at Smith Barney stock brokers. His home page is set to their loggin page. This page finds the server and loads OK. However, if I type any other URL into the address bar, I get an error message saying: "The connection was reset. The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading. …" This makes me wonder whether the trojan is under remote control and they are keylogging his entries on this page.

Here is a copy of the HJT as it now stands:

One more thing. I tried to remove Panda Platinum, since when the problem started Panda had been turned off by the trojan and when I ran a trendmicro housecall, it indicated that Panda was infected. Accordingly, I uninstalled Panda, used search to find remaining files and deleted them then searched the registry for instances of Panda and removed only those entries. I notice that there are still some remaining entries in the HJT file relating to Panda. I do not understand how to interpret the HJT logs and so would appreciate any help in getting rid of all those Panda files. Panda continues to try to install at bootup, then displays an error message, trying to inform Microsoft of the problem. When I tell it to ignore this, the Panda icon removes itself from the system tray.
Click Start > Run > and type in:

services.msc

Click OK.

In the services window find (PAVFNSVR) Panda Function Service
Right click and choose "Properties". On the "General" tab under "Service
Status" click the "Stop" button to stop the service. Beside "Startup Type"
in the dropdown menu select "Disabled". Click Apply then OK.

Do the same for these:
Panda anti-virus service (PAVSRV)
Panda Antispam Engine (pmshellsrv)

I should also add that I disabled and uninstalled Panda before installing Avast. I understand your point about not running two AV programs at the same time. Thanks. RM
Yes, I did reboot. Very strange: I removed Panda using Add/remove programs, and yet there is a new entry there for it. It only shows 1.97 MB, so it clearly is not the complete program. When I try to remove it, I get the error message: "Setup.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. …
Run msconfig and in the startup, uncheck Compaq Connections

Don't reboot yet.

Launch Notepad (Start>All Programs>Accessories), and copy/paste all the Quoted REGEDIT below to it. Don't forget to include REGEDIT4.
Save in: Desktop
File Name: fixme.reg
Save as Type: * files
Click: Save

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows]
"AppInit_DLLs"=""

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: [external image: Posted Image]
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.
(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look here with screenshots.)

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Your instruction might be tricky since notepad seems to be missing from this computer. Any other way to do this, such as directly adding the key to the registry? RM
Alternatively, I could create the notepad file on my computer, which works fine, copy it to a CD and from there paste it to the desktop in the sick computer. RM
