My computer as of late has just "locked up" on me on a regular basis. I assume it's a software (malware) problem. I'd like to know if there's anything wrong on that end before I start looking at hardware.

Here is a copy of my Hijackthis log:

Hello and Welcome to the forum.

I'm not seeing anything that would cause lockups, but lets see if this helps.

You need to update SunJava.
Updating Java:
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. It should have the Posted Image icon next to it.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on 6-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Once installed you can test to see that it is in fact installed
Sun Java Test
http://www.java.com/...d/installed.jsp

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

As far as the computer's behavior...I am a World of Warcraft fiend and realize that it only freezes while playing that. However the freezing is a recent development, and this has never happened in the year and a half I've been playing. I appreciate your help with this.

Are you getting any re-direction of web sites? WOW users had some issues with wareout infection that re-directed users to bogus web sites.

Nope, just freezing. In fact I just replied to this now after a freeze/restart from playing WoW.

I haven't defragmented a hard drive since 1997. But I have formatted in the last 6 months. And I have the latest driver for my video card.

Lets see if anything is hiding

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Can you think of anything that you added or downloaded before the issues with WOW?

Nothing coming to mind. I'm currently in the long and painful reinstallation phase. I guess this means you didn't find anything out of the ordinary, which is good. Hopefully this will resolve my issue. I appreciate your help with this.

You can delete this one:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmp.reg

If after deleting that one if you're still having the same problem you can post a new topic in Other computer problems and see what they can come up with.

Deleted. Still installing WoW. But if I have further problems I will defer to the aforementioned thread. Thanks again.
