Try this one please. Kaspersky does not clean but gives useful listing. If you receive error please post (reply) with the full message.

Please perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at
http://www.kaspersky.com/service?chapter=161739400

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply

Kaspersky found adware infected files. Do you use that PKZIP? I once downloaded it on Windows ME because I did not have way to unzip files and of course free version has adware. But since you have XP do you use it?

STEP 1.
======
Combofix
  • Download this file - combofix.exe
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Please post the ComboFix log and a new hijackthis log.
This computer started out with Windows 98. Then 98SE, ME and now XP. I have used pkzip since the dos days. I have not looked at other ways to unzip files. Maybe XP can do it? I would not mind getting rid of it if it would help solve my problem.
Thanks a lot for all the help!!!

Hi Creede,

How long has it been since you could not run AVAST? Recently, a month, or longer?

The PKZIP has adware but I do not believe it is causing your problem though. But since you have Windows XP you do not need it anymore. You can download a zipped folder and right-click it and select Extract and the files will be extracted and stored where you select.

Go to the Control panel =>Add/remove and uninstall the PKZIP and delete the
C:\PKWARE\<=folder

You can also create zipped folders too.

Here is Microsoft’s documentation about zipped folders.
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documen…t.mspx?mfr=true

This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Please post:
C:\rapport.txt
Hi Susan I tries to reply and something went wrong so will try again. You may get two replies. Avast has been messed up for over two years. The last time I was able to scan was only in safe mode and that has been a year ago. Since I put in the renew key (in safe mode) it won't scan in any mode. The splash comes up and then it dies. I would not even be able to put in the renew key now. I tried to uninstall PKzip and got "ERROR 1771 Problem with installer package '. I did not delete the directory yet but will if you think I should. I ran the program and the log follows: SmitFraudFix v2.183 Scan done at 19:32:30.50, Fri 05/18/2007 Run from C:\Documents and Settings\Jack Fink\Desktop\SmitfraudFix OS: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] - Windows_NT The filesystem type is FAT32 Fix run in normal mode »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» Process C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\csrss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MsMpEng.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswUpdSv.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\Program Files\Axaware\SpamBully 4 for Outlook Express\sb4service.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\alg.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\carpserv.exe C:\PROGRA~1\PESTPA~1\PPMemCheck.exe C:\PROGRA~1\PESTPA~1\PPControl.exe C:\PROGRA~1\PESTPA~1\CookiePatrol.exe C:\PROGRA~1\ALWILS~1\Avast4\ashDisp.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\Siber Systems\AI RoboForm\RoboTaskBarIcon.exe C:\Program Files\SlipStream Web Accelerator\slipaccel.exe C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\notepad.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\NOTEPAD.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NOTEPAD.EXE C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\Msimn.exe C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\spider.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wbem\wmiprvse.exe »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» hosts »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» C:\ »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» C:\WINDOWS »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» C:\WINDOWS\system »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» C:\WINDOWS\Web »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» C:\WINDOWS\system32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\migicons.exe FOUND ! »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» C:\Documents and Settings\Jack Fink »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» C:\Documents and Settings\Jack Fink\Application Data »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» Start Menu »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» C:\DOCUME~1\JACKFI~1\FAVORI~1 »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» Desktop »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» C:\Program Files »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» Corrupted keys »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» Desktop Components [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\Components] "Source"="About:Home" "SubscribedURL"="About:Home" "FriendlyName"="My Current Home Page" »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» Sharedtaskscheduler !!!Attention, following keys are not inevitably infected!!! That's a long time for AVAST not to have worked. Have you ever thought about removing it entirely and installing another Anti-virus application? There are some free anti-virus applications (personal use only).

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

Are you saying you have a white desktop now? Please do the following then. Go to Control Panel > Display Properties. Click the Desktop tab and click the Customize Desktop button. Click the Web tab and make sure all checkboxes in this window are unchecked. If any look a bit odd, check them then uncheck again. Did AVAST problems occur when you converted to Windows XP? How did you originally install AVAST? Did you download it or have a CD?
Hi Susan I guess I was not to clear on my lost reply. When I performed the following instruction: Next Click Start, click Control Panel and then double-click Display. Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see a checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click Ok then Apply and Ok. I meant to say that I did not see an entry called Security info or something similar. Sorry for the confusion. I down loaded Avast from their site several years ago. One day, I went to a site that gave me a virus. Avast signaled that I had a virus. I thought I had removed it, but had not, I guess. The operation of Avast started to deteriate since that time. It went through several stages of deteriation since then. At first I could run a scan in safe mode although I think it really was not working right. About a month ago, I upgraded to the latest release and that is when really strange things started to happen. I would run a scan and it would identify a virus. When I asked the program to remove it, it crashed. I ran it again and when a virus was found, I said to continue the scan. When the next virus was found, I again said to continue and it crashed. I tried to run another scan and the splash came up and it crashed. It would never run after that. That is the last time I tried to run the program and posted the log here. I have not seen other effects of the virus although who knows? I hope the above is clear, a lot has happened over time. I really appreciate your help on this problem!! Creede

About a month ago, I upgraded to the latest release and that is when really strange things started to happen.

When you upgraded, what did that involve. Did you uninstall the old version first and then install the new version? Or was the new version installed without uninstalling the old version?

I am thinking that the best approach would be to completely uninstall the AVAST, make sure there are no folders, registry entries, etc. for AVAST present and then to freshly install it again. But I am wanting to determine if you had already tried that.
When I was working with Avast support (email) about a year ago, I uninstalled and deleted all folders and reinstalled the software twice and that did not change the problem. That's when they gave up on me. During the daily signiture file update, I got a message saying an upgrade was available click to install it and that is what I did. I believe that the upgrade process only changes a few files. I think the whole program is about 12 meg's and I only had to download less than 1 meg. I have not tried to run the program since you started helping me. Should I try it? I can uninstall it and reinstall it if you want. I am not sure how to handle the registry entries though. I can run regedit but am not sure what to change.
