Hi shrimper,

Please do me a favor. That one file was so difficult to delete so I wish someone could analyze it. Would you please upload the zip file for analysis?

Please do the following:
http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/index.php?PH…f&board=1.0

Please go to the link above and scroll down so that you see the board with the headings -subjects, started by, replies, etc. You will see a tab “New Topic” at the right. Please click the “New Topic” tab.

Then scroll down. Please enter your name and email address.
Copy and paste Analysis of ebbacadccfed.dll into the Subject line.

Copy and paste the following link into the box.
http://forums.tomcoyote.org/Hijack_Log_Hel…5.html&st=0

You will see the “Attach” below and click the “Browse” button and navigate to the following file on your computer:
C:\avenger\backup.zip

Then please Click “Post”.

Please let me know if you were able to do this.
==================
I believe we are almost through but before I give you the final clean-up instructions, I would like to see the results of one more virus scan since we did a lot since running the AVG anti-spyware scan.

Please perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at
http://www.kaspersky.com/service?chapter=161739400

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
**Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

Please post (reply) with the results from Kaspersky and a fresh hijackthis log.
Hi Susan, I uploaded the avenger zip file for analysis. And Im now doing the scan at Kaspersky. Its been running for about 3 hours and is about halfway done. The time is not a concern to me but Norton AV autoprotect has poped up wiht a couple of viruses and its saying : Risk Detected. You must take action to remove a risk from you computer. the files are Adware.Purity scan and Trojan.Vundo and the directory is C:\System Volume Information\_restore{8153ACA8-C727-4835-A7D4-A3A2B949B296}\RP1\ I'm hoping this means they are in a restore directory that we will delete at some point. However I dont know what to do at this point. Should I just ignore NAV and let the kaspersky scan keep going or take some other action? shrimper
Hi Shrimper, Those _restore files we clear at the end and it is easy. Policy here and other malware removal forums is not to clear the restore points until then end. In extreme case if there are problems, one could use infected restore point to go back to. But if restore points had been cleared then there would be nothing to fall back on. I am sorry about the time for scanning but results will help us to know if your system is clean. Just let it go. Are you a shrimper? I have fond memories of dragging a seine net with friend and her dad down at Mobile Bay. I did get barbed serveral times but that night we were invited over for supper. I loved her mama's shrimp creole. Susan
Thanks Susan, I was thinking that was what those files were but I wanted to sure after coming this far. I wanted to make sure that it was Ok if i just ignored Nortons messges and closed the window. Now that I closed the notification window I think the scan is going a bit faster. No problem with the time it takes dont be sorry about that. I'm grateful for the help and to be able to ask you questions no matter how long it takes to do what needs to be done. I got the patience of an oyster! And yes..I am a shrimper. I'm almost retired from shrimping now but I still have a shrimpboat and a skiff in North Carolina where I go shrimping, fishing, and clamming in the summer. It sound like you enjoyed it when you went and I bet that shrimp creole was wonderful! :)
Hi Susan,

Here are the results of the scan and the HJT log.

Hi Shrimper,

Just a few more things to clean up.
How to Clean a Java Cache Folder
http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/virus…javacache.shtml

You have some infected files inside Java cache folder. The location of this folder is in your case:
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\<=delete only the files within the cache folder and not the cache folder itself!
To empty the cache folder, access it with Windows Explorer. Select all files and subfolders and then press the "Delete" button on a keyboard, or select the File->Delete menu option. As this folder contains only cached files, no actual data is lost in the operation.

WARNING! Please be careful when deleting files. Make sure that you are deleting files only inside the Java cache folder, otherwise you may damage your system!

=============================
Please delete the following files:
C:\Deckard\System Scanner\backup<=folder
C:\QooBox<=folder
C:\VundoFix Backups<=folder
C:\Program Files\Agent\Data000005.DAT<=file
================================
The following are old emails that are infected you should delete.

Then empty your recycle bin. Then disable your anti-virus and run the Kaspersky scan again to make sure nothing slipped by.

Run hijackthis. Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click Fix checked and exit.

Please post(reply) with the Kaspersky results or let me know if the results were clean, and another hijackthis log.
Hi Susan,

First, I received a reply from Derek at spy killers concerning the file you wanted analyzed.

"definitely vundo but undetected & passed on to antiviruses & the developers of combofix & vundofix"
Here's the link also: Spykiller Results

I also eveything that you told me to do and have run another Kaspersky scan. It looks like we have all of the bad files except the ones in the restore areas but I thought I'd better let you take a look at the results also.

Good Work Shrimper, :D

Thanks for the information from TheSpykiller. It is a vicious cycle trying to keep one step ahead of the malware creators.

You can delete the tools we used to clean-up your infections.
ComboFix
Avenger
Deckard’s System Scanner
And uninstall hijackthis

STEP 1.
======
No Firewall Onboard

Also I do not see a firewall application installed. Perhaps you have a hardware firewall but a combination of both a software firewall and a hardware firewall is better. Just be sure there are no conflicts. Please do not rely solely on the Windows XP firewall. Using a software firewall other than the XP firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Select one of these, or another of your choice:Test your Firewall - Please test your firewall and make sure it is working properly.
Test Firewall

STEP 2.
======

Create a new System Restore point

STEP 3.

DON’T BECOME OVERCONFIDENT WITH ANTIVIRUS APPLICATIONS INSTALLED!!!

http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic….39eba6ea0b5e8ee

Stay up to date on security patches and be extremely wary of clicking on links and attachments that arrive unbidden in instant messages and e-mail.

"The number one thing the majority of the malicious code we're seeing now does is disable or delete anti-virus and other security software," Dunham said. "In a lot of cases, once the user clicks on that attachment, it's already too late."

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit Windows Updates regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.
    A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
    A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
    A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

  • More info on how to prevent malware you can also find here (By Tony Klein)
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Thank you for allowing me to assist you.

Susan, Thank you very much for helping me with my computer problems . I appreciate the final advice and program suggestions very much and will try to make sure I follow your directions. I've had some of those programs you've mentioned but I forget to update them as I should. Again, Thank you for taking the time to assist me. I wish you all the best in your future! shrimper
You are very welcome! Glad your computer is running better. Updating programs is very important and it is not just Windows and MS Applications that are important to update but other applications as well like Adobe, Java, etc. The malware writer and hackers are trying to find every flaw to take advantage of. I enjoyed working with you and good luck with your shrimping! Susan
