Hi, I don't know if anyone can help me as I'm not entirely sure if I have a problem or not. My computer has started to run a lot slower than normal (I'm used to it being quite slow as I have pitiful amounts of ram) and freezing whilst I'm doing stuff. Also when I was trying to uninstall some programs I no longer use I found files that claim theycan't be deleted as access is denied because they are being accessed by another user when I'm the only user and haven't had them open for ages. I've ran spybot and AVG virus scan and also checked I don't need to defrag. Please could someone have a look at my HijackThis log and put my mind to rest that it's just my computer getting old and not something more sinister. Many thanks Kat Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 22:59:00, on 10/05/2007 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZoneLabs\vsmon.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgamsvr.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgupsvc.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgemc.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgcc.exe C:\PROGRA~1\TEXTBR~1.0\Bin\INSTAN~1.EXE C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\bin\jusched.exe C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exe C:\Program Files\TrojanHunter 4.6\THGuard.exe C:\Program Files\Logitech\MouseWare\system\em_exec.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Sony\SONICS~1\SsAAD.exe C:\Program Files\Ringo\Hub.exe C:\Program Files\TextBridge Classic 2.0\Ereg\REMIND32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\HijackThis.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\dumprep.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\dumprep.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\dumprep.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\dumprep.exe O2 - BHO: (no name) - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - C:\PROGRA~1\SPYBOT~1\SDHelper.dll O2 - BHO: SSVHelper Class - {761497BB-D6F0-462C-B6EB-D4DAF1D92D43} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\bin\ssv.dll O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AVG7_CC] C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgcc.exe /STARTUP O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [InstantAccess] C:\PROGRA~1\TEXTBR~1.0\Bin\INSTAN~1.EXE /h O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Cmaudio] RunDll32 cmicnfg.cpl,CMICtrlWnd O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SoundMan] SOUNDMAN.EXE O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSPM] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\ISUSPM.exe" -scheduler O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\bin\jusched.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Logitech Utility] Logi_MwX.Exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ZoneAlarm Client] "C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exe" O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SsAAD.exe] C:\PROGRA~1\Sony\SONICS~1\SsAAD.exe O4 - Startup: reminder-ScanSoft Product Registration.lnk = C:\Program Files\TextBridge Classic 2.0\Ereg\REMIND32.EXE O4 - Global Startup: Logitech Desktop Messenger.lnk = C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\LDMConf.exe O4 - Global Startup: Ringo Launcher.lnk = C:\Program Files\Ringo\Hub.exe O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\bin\npjpi160_01.dll O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Sun Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\bin\npjpi160_01.dll O9 - Extra button: Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Windows Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe O20 - Winlogon Notify: WgaLogon - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WgaLogon.dll O23 - Service: AVG7 Alert Manager Server (Avg7Alrt) - GRISOFT, s.r.o. - C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgamsvr.exe O23 - Service: AVG7 Update Service (Avg7UpdSvc) - GRISOFT, s.r.o. - C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgupsvc.exe O23 - Service: AVG E-mail Scanner (AVGEMS) - GRISOFT, s.r.o. - C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgemc.exe O23 - Service: InstallDriver Table Manager (IDriverT) - Macrovision Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Driver\1150\Intel 32\IDriverT.exe O23 - Service: MSCSPTISRV - Sony Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sony Shared\AVLib\MSCSPTISRV.exe O23 - Service: PACSPTISVR - Sony Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sony Shared\AVLib\PACSPTISVR.exe O23 - Service: Sony SPTI Service (SPTISRV) - Sony Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sony Shared\AVLib\SPTISRV.exe O23 - Service: TrueVector Internet Monitor (vsmon) - Zone Labs, LLC - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ZoneLabs\vsmon.exe

katkatkat :D

Welcome to the forum. I am not looking at anything out of the ordinary on your log.

Run this system cleaner.

Download and Install CCleaner
If you don't want the Yahoo Toolbar, be sure to uncheck it during installation
  • Click on Run Cleaner
Tutorial for CCleaner

Windows has 1000s of .DLL files and are used by many programs, the ones you wanted to remove are most likely being used by another program and if you remove it one of your other programs may not function.

For windows XP to run properly you should have at least 512 MB of memory, any less and you will see sluggish performance. Right click on My Computer and then click on Properties and down towards the bottom of that tab you will see the amount of memory installed. Let me know what it is.

Why don't you run the trial of AVG Anti Spyware it will produce a report that may have tell tale signs of an infection.

Make sure you follow these instructions correctly to Remove or Quarantine what it finds and also to save the report, without me seeing the report my hands are tied.
Download and install the 30 day trial of AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 to your desktop. It's very important that I see the report so make sure you follow the instructions and save the log.
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
  • Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <-- Dont forget this
  • Under Reports
  • Select Automatically generate report after every scan
  • Un-Select Only if threats were found
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 <-- Do not run the scan yet.
Boot your computer into Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
  • This will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to SAFEMODE
  • Then press the Enter on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
  • AVG will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
  • Next select the Reports icon at the top.
  • Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system <--Don't forget this
  • make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5
Post the AVG report and a New HJT log please

Thanks for your help. I've done all the stuff you said and my two reports are below. I think you may have solved the problem of why my computer is getting ever increasingly slower though when you say I need 512mb ram to run XP I only have 96mb. I'm guessing this isn't good, it was a second hand computer I got from a friend as my old one wasn't good enough to access the internet. Can ram be upgraded or will I need to save up for a new computer? Good Morning :D All AVG found where cookies, nothing bad. If you were infected with something it would have showed up on the report. Increasing memory is one of the cheapest upgrades you can do for a computer, look on the sticker on your computer, it may be on the back somewhere and give me the make and model of your computer and lets see if its upgradeable. Computers with XP shipped mainly with 256 so I suspect that this is a windows 98 computer that may have been upgraded to XP. If you system is real old it would be cheaper to just buy a new one, but lets see what you have and go from there. Ken

The only sticker I can seem to find is one on the top that's to do with XP. I've made a couple of phone calls, it's an acer and was custom made about 7-8 years ago. Don't know if this is any help but I'm guessing on a computer this old I won't be able to updgrade easily.

Does it say on the front of the case what model it is?

If not, go to this site Crucial it's the site I buy all my memory for some of the work I do, most of the big companies like Dell buy it here also. There is an option to Scan My System , you will have to download a Active X program but its safe to run from this company. Let it scan and post back the results.

Ok Kat,

My day off today but I am in the basement painting the floor  So I will check back with you often today. Let me ask you this, are you a tinkerer , does going inside a computer case scare you or do you think you can install memory, its not brain surgery.

These are your options
http://www.crucial.c...del=Aspire 8000

Like I said, most XP computers when they first came out shipped with 256mb of ram , some low end shipped with 128, you have 128 is why your computer is crawling. If you installed 256 that would give you 384 and it would help, if you installed 512, that would give you 768 and you would see a big difference. Your AMD Processor is not that fast either but you can't really upgrade it, its old and hard to find. It runs at approx 1.2 GHz and the new ones out today are around 2 to 3 GHz. So you have to evaluate what you want to do, is the computer worth the money to upgrade or would you be better off buying a new one. My inlaws just bought an eMachine ( owned by Gateway ) at Bestbuy for under $500 and it included a printer and the new Windows Vista Home Premium. You can also check the Dell website as they are always running specials.

Anyway, at least you know you have no malware slowing you down.

Here are some free programs to install to help keep you more secure on the internet.

How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.

Here are some free programs to install, don't leave home without them
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give you the option to deny the change.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
You have AVG Free Anti Virus and ZoneAlarm firewall  You only need one AV and One firewall so do not install any others, but the rest of the programs are fine and will not conflict with each other.

If you decide to upgrade the memory and need assisstance post back and I can guide you along. I will close this thread in about 10 days if I don't hear back.

Ken :D

Many thanks for your help. I've had a think about it and I'll probably be better off just buying a new computer. Once again thank you for sparing the time to help me. Kat
