Hi there,

I have a problem were certain windows in IE7 fail to work and has an error message stating there was a script error and asks do I want to continue running scripts. Of course if you say yes the eror comes back, if you say no the error goes until you move the mouse over a butoon in the window when the error comes back again.

Please help, if you can.

Thanks

Steve

Please perform an online scan with Internet Explorer at
http://www.kaspersky.com/service?chapter=161739400

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
**Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

    • Disable script debugging (Internet Explorer)
      Disable script debugging (Other)
  • Make sure the following box is not checked:
    Display a notification about every script error
  • Select the OK button
Please post (reply) with the results from Kaspersky, a new hijackthis log. and let me know about the scripting errors.
Many thanks for the quick reply.

First of all my Java setting were as you suggested they were.

An example of a problem page is here:-

http://onecare.live.com/site/en-US/center/tuneup.htm

Select the tune up, accept the terms and conditions and a window pops up.

The error message states:-

An error has occured in the script on this page.

Line: 2
Char: 1
Error: Invalid Character
Code: 0
URL: about:blank

and the it asks if I want to continue.

The error contiues and the tune-up doesn't run.

The webpage at the top of this box is:-

Please do the following:

STEP 1.
======
MyWay Removal
Open ‘Add/Remove Programs’ in the Control Panel.
  • Select the ‘My Search Bar’ (MySearch variant), ‘MyWay Speed Bar’ (MyWay) or ‘My Web Search Bar’ (MyWeb) entry
  • Click ‘Remove’.
  • For the MyWeb variant, be sure to also remove ‘Fun Web Products Easy Installer’
  • Open My Computer, Drive C, and double-click on the Program Files folder
  • Right-click and delete the folders for:
    FunWebProducts
    MyWebSearch
STEP 2.
======
Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:
C:\Documents and Settings\Home\My Documents\ZIP Files\kf151.zip<=file
C:\Documents and Settings\Home\My Documents\ZIP Files\MyFunCardsSetup2.2.60.4.exe<=file
C:\Documents and Settings\Home\My Documents\ZIP Files\Utilities\wssetup.exe<=file
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\BTOW Shared Files\btwebcontrol.dll<=file
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\msimg32.dll<=file
C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msimg32.dll<=file
C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\riched20.dll<=file
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\popcaploader.dll<=file
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\f3PSSavr.scr<=file

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

STEP 3.
======
Run hijackthis. Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://edits.mywebsearch.com/toolbaredits/…arch.jhtml?p=ZU
Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click Fix checked and exit.

STEP 4.
======
Updating Java
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u1-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Please run Kaspersky and let me know if any infected items are remaining. Also let me know if your scan was clean. One of the items appeared to be a key-logger. If the Kaspersky scan is clean, I would recommend changing your passwords.

Post (reply) with a fresh hijackthis log.

Please let me know about the site:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-US/center/tuneup.htm

Are you still obtaining errors? I had problems with this site earlier today but now it is working for me.
Hi again,

Thanks for your advise, much appreciated.

Java - I uninstalled 7 versions of Java Runtime and rebooted and installed the latest version.

I still get errors on that web page.

It is the JavaScript settings. I hate JavaScript– you go to another site and you are told to disable it for security protection
exqmple =>http://www.jasons-toolbox.com/BrowserSecurity/

and then you go to another site and you are told to enable it to use the site like this one. There is such inconsistencies!

Please try this and let me know.
This is from the help page for the scanner

Turn on JavaScript
To use the scanner, you must change your Web browser settings to enable JavaScript. To enable JavaScript in Microsoft Internet Explorer:
On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
In the Internet Options dialog box, click the Security tab. For Select a Web content zone to specify its security settings, click Trusted sites, then click Sites.
In the Trusted sites dialog box, add http://safety.live.com, click to clear the Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone check box, then click OK.
Back in the Internet Options dialog box, click Custom Level.
In the Security Settings dialog box, scroll down to Scripting. Under Active scripting, click Enable.
Click OK to close the Internet Options dialog box.
Return to the Windows Live OneCare safety scanner Web site and try to run the scanner again.
Hi Steve,

Sorry I did not reply yesterday.

Are you still obtaining this error?

An error has occured in the script on this page.

Line: 2
Char: 1
Error: Invalid Character
Code: 0
URL: about:blank

I want to check now and make sure that the Java is alright and narrow problem down to just JavaScript.
If you can view the three Java applets here the problem is not with Java on your computer. You should be able to see an A B and C box. You may need to wait a few seconds for the boxes to load with the letters.

Sometimes Security packages have script blocking applications and you have to allow scripts to run but I do not know if this may be the problem here.

Please let me know more about error.
Thanks.

Went to the site and could see A B and C.

A was red and looked like it had a search light going over it.

B was blue, nothing was happening.

C was green and shimmery.

I take it that's correct.

I go to site http://onecare.live.com/site/en-gb/center/tuneup.htm and click on the liitle blue box with "Tune Up Scan" with in it.

A Microsoft licence page come up and I click on "accept".

Another box load and an error box appears with that error message.

I click on "No" and it seems to load and then comes up with the same error again.

The only thing I can do then is click "No" and then close the box down.

Not sure what else I can add.

I did a right click and choose "View Source", This is what came up. Any use:-

The Windows Live OneCare safety scanner's tune up scan will check to see if you should defragment your hard disk to help improve performance, and then do it for you.

Your scan will take about 1 minute. If the scanner finds any issues, it will take some more time to fix them.

Hi dunacting,

Let's see if you can run a script. If you can, I would like to see the results also and maybe that will provide a clue.

Please do the following:

STEP 1.
======
Regscan

Please download RegScan.
Within RegScan.zip you will find the file regscan.vbs
You may have to allow this script to run or disable anti-spyware again in order for it to run.
A window will open titled RegFinder.vbs and you will see place to input search terms.
Please enter the search terms:
Javascript
After the search has completed a window titled Results.txt will open.
Please copy the results and post(reply) back.
This must be a daft question but I've got to ask it. How do I run the file? I have no file associations with a VBS file. Thanks Steve :blink:
Hi Steve, It is not a daft question. VBS is Microsoft's version of JavaScript. I believe the problem must be related. I must do some more research on this. I will get back to you.
Please download Deckard's Association File Tool (DAFT) and save it to your desktop:
  • Double-click the daft.exe icon. Read the disclaimer and click OK.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • If it finds faulty file associations, they will appear in red beside a checkbox. If this occurs, just place a tick in the boxes in question.
  • Click the Fix button.
  • Re-scan and save a logfile. By default, it will save as daft.txt.

Post the contents of that logfile with your next post
