Started having problems last week. Every time I turn on my computer and open Firefox now (I rarely use IE), Internet Explorer opens automatically. Systemdoctor and other popups ensue. Also, Firefox crashes alot now, especially when playing embedded media. I've run AVG, Spybot, and Ad-Aware SE to no avail. Spybot picked up a Smitfraud toolbar. Please help. Here is my Hijack this log:

Hi seandemond.

Welcome to TomCoyote forums.

SmitFraudFix (by S!Ri)
  • Please download SmitFraudFix from here and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click on Smitfraud.exe
  • Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter - a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Do not run any of the other options at this stage.

Please copy/paste the content of the report (c:\rapport.txt) into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a 'RiskTool'; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between 'good' and 'malicious' use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

I think that you may have something that's hiding from HijackThis. To fool the 'nasty' into letting us see the complete picture, we need to rename HijackThis.exe.

Click on Start then My Computer and navigate to the folder C:\HijackThis\ and rename HijackThis.exe as NoHiding.exe.

——————————————————————

Please post, as a reply to this thread:
  • The SmitFraudFix report (c:\rapport.txt)
  • A new HijackThis log (run as NoHiding)
Thanks for replying.

Thanks again for helping.
Hi.

That's better - it's surprising what comes out of the woodwork, isn't it! The good news is that SmitFraudFix didn't find any problems. Let's get things cleaned up.

There's one nasty item which I want to get out of the way immediately. Run HijackThis and click Scan and then check (tick) the following, if present (please let me know if it is missing):

O16 - DPF: {58E8B389-75C2-1BDB-5D64-277945F2D29B} - http://85.255.113.214/1/gdnUS2218.exe

Close down all programs, browsers and other open windows. Make sure that only the above item is checked and then click on Fix checked.

VundoFix

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • It will create a report named vundofix.txt on your main drive (C:\vundofix.txt)
Note: It is possible that VundoFix may encounter a file it cannot remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot Simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Please post, as a reply to this thread:

I'm also getting a popup of sorts after startup concerning rundll32.exe, system 32\phcopben.dll. Not sure what that's about. Thanks again for your help.
Good morning.

That looks a bit better! :)

I'm also getting a popup of sorts after startup concerning rundll32.exe, system 32\phcopben.dll. Not sure what that's about.

It's a 'baddie' - we'll get rid of it in a minute. It looks as if VundoFix has stopped it running properly, which is good. There's quite a bit to do in this post. Take it one step at a time. If you have any questions or problems, stop and ask.

I already had AVG installed

I think that I can see what caused the confusion. You already have AVG Anti-Virus installed. The program that I asked you to download was AVG Anti-Spyware. This replaces the ewido anti-malware program.

I'll repeat the remaining instructions for clarity:

AVG Anti-Spyware:

Download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware from here and install it (NB this website is still showing as 'ewido'). When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, AVG Anti-Spyware will open. Do not run a scan yet.

If the program does not automatically update itself during installation, or you are unsure whether it has done so, please do the following:
  • Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
  • The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
  • It is essential that you get the update - keep trying until successful.
You will need to change the following settings:
  • Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is… click active. This should now change to inactive.
  • Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
  • Under How to act? - make sure that Quarantine is selected.
  • Under How to scan? - All checkboxes should be ticked.
  • Under Possibly unwanted software - All checkboxes should be ticked.
  • Under Reports - Select Automatically generate report after every scan and uncheck Only if threats were found.
  • Under What to scan? - Select Scan every file.
You can now close AVG Anti-Spyware. Do not scan yet.

Boot to Safe Mode.

You will need to reboot your computer into Safe Mode for the next steps. It would be a good idea for you to print these instructions, as you will not have access to the internet.

  • Restart your computer.
  • Continually tap the F8 button as your computer is booting (a menu appears).
  • Use up-arrow key to select Safe Mode and press Enter.

Please let me know how the computer is running now.

I think that I can see what caused the confusion. You already have AVG Anti-Virus installed. The program that I asked you to download was AVG Anti-Spyware. This replaces the ewido anti-malware program.

Sorry. That was pretty embarrassing.

* Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
* The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
* It is essential that you get the update - keep trying until successful.

I've been trying to get the update for quite some time with no luck. It keeps saying "server not serving, try again" I'll post again when I get it. Thanks again for your help.
If you continue to have problems updating AVG Anti-Spyware, you can download an installer for the full database from here (save it on your desktop). Once you have downloaded the installer, double-click on avgas-signatures-full-current.exe to install the database.

^^^This file was missing, but the popups don't happen anymore.

Finally got through to AVG. Here's the log, along with HijackThis:

P.S. : Computer's running much better now. Can't thank you enough.
That's looking good :)

I'd like you to run an online scan to make sure that we've got everything.

Kaspersky Online Scanner

Using Internet Explorer, go to: http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
  • Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner
  • Click the Accept button
  • Follow the prompts to download and install the ActiveX component(s) and other software
    • If a yellow information bar appears at the top of the browser window, click on it and select Install ActiveX Control
    • If a message box appears, click on OK or Run as appropriate
  • Click Accept again (see the note below if using IE7)
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click 'Next'.
  • Now click on 'Scan Settings'
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database: 'Extended' (If available, otherwise 'Standard')
    • Scan Options: 'Scan Archives' and 'Scan Mail Bases'
  • Click 'OK'
  • Now under 'Select a target to scan' select 'My Computer'
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete, it will display whether your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as… button:
  • Save the report to your desktop (Save as type: Text document (txt))
Note: The Kaspersky online scanner is not yet fully compatible with IE7. You may get returned to a window without the Accept/Decline buttons after allowing the ActiveX control. The buttons are there - you just can't see them! Click on the zoom button (bottom, right of the window) and change it from 100% to 75%. You should now see the buttons. Reset to 100% once the license has been accepted.

The only relevant items in the Kaspersky scan relate to either SmitFraudFix or are in System Restore. Your computer appears to be clean.

Let's tidy up. You can delete the following:
  • SmitFraudFix (folder and .exe) and its report (c:\rapport.txt)
  • VundoFix and its report (C:\vundofix.txt)
I suggest that you keep ATF Cleaner and AVG Anti-Spyware as they are both useful programs.

Flush System Restore

We need to 'flush' your System Restore points and create a new clean one.

Turn OFF System Restore.
  • Click on Start
  • Right-click My Computer
  • Click Properties
  • Click the System Restore tab
  • Check Turn off System Restore
  • Click Apply, and then click OK
Restart your computer

Turn ON System Restore.
  • Click on Start
  • Right-click My Computer
  • Click Properties
  • Click the System Restore tab
  • Uncheck Turn off System Restore
  • Click Apply, and then click OK

If you do not already use it, I suggest that you install SpywareBlaster. This program will:
  • Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.
  • Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
  • Restrict the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.
This program blocks these items but does not run in the background. It therefore does not use any resources.

I would also recommend that you have a look at Firetrust SiteHound. This gives warnings when you are about to enter a website that is on their 'block' list. An alternative is McAfee SiteAdvisor. I use SiteHound, but both have a good reputation (N.B. use only one of them, not both).

Please let me know if you have any questions.
I'm now using AVG Anti-Spyware and Anti-Virus, Zone Alarm, SpywareBlaster, and FireTrust Sitehound. (sounds like a lot). :D

One last question–the ones that say "file missing"–should I be concerned? :
