Hi,

I ran my AVG and it came up with three trojans. It healed them but now I'm sceptical about something being attached to my system. I have noticed some stalling (brief but noticeable) on web searches.

Also I've noticed a new addition in my hijackthis log - O20 - Winlogon Notify: WgaLogon - C:\WINDOWS\

Is this file troublesome?

Here is my actual log, I'd appreciate if someone could lead me correctly. Thanks in advance.

Hi acimino,

First, can you have a look at your antivirus log and post the details of the malware found - such as virus name and file/path - this will help me double-check that your antivirus program has fully dealt with the problem.

There is nothing bad that I can see in your HijackThis log, however this doesn't necessarily mean your machine is clean. The WgaLogon entry you mentioned is a normal part of Microsoft Windows Genuine Advantage - this is an anti-piracy mechanism which Microsoft installs into your computer as part of Windows Update. The entry on your computer however doesn't look normal, and perhaps something has gone wrong with the installation - do you know anything about this?

Next we will do a couple of scans to see if there is any further malware on your system:

Please print/save a copy of these instructions because we will be using Safe Mode, during which time you won't have access to the internet.

Download, install, and update AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5
Download the installer from this page:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
  • Save the installer to desktop
  • Double click the installer, select your language, and then select OK
  • Click NEXT->Do or don't read the "User License Agreement"
    Select I Agree->NEXT->INSTALL
  • AVG will now install and afterwards click FINISH
  • Click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
  • After the update finishes the status bar at the bottom will display Update successful
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware. Do not run a scan yet.
Reboot your computer into Safe Mode
To boot into Safe Mode, please restart your computer. Tap F8 before Windows loads.
Select Safe Mode at the top, on the screen that appears.
Sign in with your normal user account

Once in safe mode:
  • Then run AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 and click on the Scanner tab at the top
  • Click the Settings tab and then change the recommended action to Quarantine and ensure that Automatically generate report after every scan is selected and Un-check Only if Threats are found
  • Click back to the Scan tab and then click on Complete System Scan.
  • This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.
  • AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action.
  • Click the Apply all actions button. AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 will display All actions have been applied on the right hand side.
  • Click on Save Report, then Save Report As. This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).
Now reboot your computer normally

Next, download F-Secure Blacklight (blbeta.exe):
https://europe.f-sec...light/try.shtml
  • Click I ACCEPT and download the graphical user interface version to your Desktop
  • Double click the file to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
  • It will create the "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log" on your desktop.
  • The log will have a list of all items found.
  • Do not choose to rename any yet! I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present.
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.
Once complete, please post the details of the malware from your antivirus log, the AVG Antispyware log, the Blacklight log and a new HijackThis log.

Hi Silver,

Thank you for helping me. I followed your recommendations, and there's not really much to show for it. Maybe I was fretting all for not. Regardless here are the logs (if everything is alright, please do let me know):

AVG Anti-Virus:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\3ti.exe.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\pdp.exe.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\zup.exe.exe

All files were deleted by AVG

Hi acimino,

Yes those logs look good so AVG may have taken care of the problem, however the files AVG found were very bad news so we'll do a further scan to make sure.

First, please select Start->Run and carefully type or copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
net stop wincom32
If you see any messages please include them in your next response.

Next, please do an online scan with Kaspersky:

Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop
Once complete, please post the Kaspersky log along with a new HijackThis log.

Hi acimino,

We've had a pretty close look and your machine looks to be clean of malware. Are you still noticing the stalling on web searches or anything else unusual on your machine?

Kaspersky found a quarantined file which we will remove:
Press Start->Run, copy/paste this command into the box and press OK:
cmd /c del "C:\Documents and Settings\Main\.housecall6.6\Quarantine\count[1].htm.bac_a02836"

Then, open AVG Antivirus, choose the Virus Vault and permanently delete the bad files.

Your Java is outdated and is now a security risk
Go to Start » Control Panel » Add/Remove Programs
Search for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
(It should have this icon next to it: Posted Image)
Click that entry and then click on the Change/Remove button and follow the instructions to remove Java.
Repeat to remove all versions of Java.
Download and install the newest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE), from here:
http://java.sun.com/...loads/index.jsp

Please visit Windows Update and obtain the latest updates for your machine, which may include Windows Genuine Advantage. If so, please make sure you go ahead with the installation, as a non-functional installation may cause system problems - it may be responsible for the unusual behavior you have experienced - we won't know for sure until it is fully installed and operating normally.

You should also consider a Personal Firewall program. Even if you are behind a NAT router, I recommend you install firewall software as it will improve the security of your computer by monitoring and controlling outbound connections to the internet as well as inbound. There are various free packages available, I recommend Sunbelt Software's Kerio available from here:
http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio

Once complete, please post a new HijackThis log and let me know if you had any problems.

Hi Silver,

Thanks again! Nope. No real problems to announce. Then again, I haven't been web surfing that much this weekend. Immaterial to that, things seem to be working alright. Here is my latest log (after following your recommendations of course):

Hi acimino,

Your log looks fine, here are a few more things to help you stay clean:

You now have AVG Antispyware installed which is an excellent program, however it's real-time protection functionality is not free. I recommend you consider purchasing the full version of the program, but if you choose not to purchase it, you should install another antispyware program with real-time protection - there are several free programs available with this capability, one I can recommend is Windows Defender, available here:
http://www.microsoft...re/default.mspx

Now that your machine is up to date, keep it that way with Automatic Updates:
Go to Start->Control Panel->Automatic Updates
Select Automatic and select a suitable schedule
Also, check that your antivirus and antispyware programs also automatically update as often as practical.

IESPYADS helps protect you from malicious websites by placing a list of known bad websites in Internet Explorer's Restricted Zone. This Zone limits the capabilities of these websites including preventing them from installing software. This will compliment your security software and I recommend you install it:
http://www.spywarewa...uc/resource.htm

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Find out how to prevent infection in the future

Please post back to let me know you have read this, and if there are any further issues.
