I am pulling my hair out and ready to call a computer expert. My husband is not very smart with computers, he clicked on a link and it asked if he wanted to allow it to redirect him to a different site and he clicked yes :rant2: I downloaded all windows updates, I use XP. I ran Spybot, F-Secure and Lavasoft AdAware (newest version). All detected something and "deleted" it, but it keeps coming back. I ran hijackthis and tried to save the log, it closed on me. This happens automatically when I try to get a log. So I cannot save a log. I tried restarting the computer and saving another log, same problem. My computer is slow and I have a feeling the virus is somewhere in the system restore where it is protected from deletion. Someone please help, I'm desperate.
Hi Sonja27, My name is mschroe919 and I will see if I can help you here. First off we do need a log so I have a couple things to try. One lets try starting in safe mode: Here is how: Windows XP * Click Start. * Select Shutdown. * Select Restart and click OK. * During restart, hold down the F8 key on your keyboard until the Windows Startup menu appears. * If your PC starts beeping then release the key for a few seconds before holding it down again. * Select Safe Mode from the Startup menu, and press the Enter button on your keyboard. * Windows should start in Safe Mode. If Windows doesn't restart in Safe Mode then please try again. Once in safe mode go to where you have HJT.exe and change the name to scann.exe. Once the name is changed and still in safe mode run the new scann.exe and save a file and post it here. I hope you had the HJT file in a sepperate folder too. Good Luck mschroe919
Okay, renaming it in safe mode worked, here it is:

As of now, the computer is chugging. I have run every malware removal tool I can think of and each has pulled bugs out and cleaned them. Still slow, I'm getting full page pop ups, and browser hijack attempts (which my F-Secure is catching).
Hi sonja27,
There is some work to do here. First don't delete anything till asked to.
Lets start here:
Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new scann.exe log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Good Luck mschroe919
I had to run Vundo a few times, it would not start up when rebooted and I figured out that it was because it wasn't saved in the right place - once I did that, it ran upon start up and tried to delete the remaining files. Only one that it could not delete: system32\jkkll.dll

Hi sonja27

Welcome back to the TomCoyote Forums.
I see we are getting somewhere now. Some files are stubborn.
And we need another program to get it out. So please download killbox
from here:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/killbox.php

Don't run yet we will later

[bNEXT:
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Download Here:
http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
[bNEXT:

Now go ahead and set your computer to show hidden files like so:

click on My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Apply then OK. Click Yes to confirm.
==============================================

Sign off the internet and remain offline until this procedure is complete. Unplug your modem or disconnect the cable or phone line. Copy these instructions to notepad and save them on your desktop for easy access. You must follow these directions exactly and you cannot skip any part of it.
______________________________________________________________________

Restart to safe mode.

Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

1. Restart your computer
2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

While in safe mode please run a scan on scann.exe and put a check by the following:

I saw similar ones, but they didn't start with the same letters/numbers so I didn't want to chance it until asking you first.

The first 2 with expectnothing.com is my homepage, does that make a difference or did they still need to be deleted?

When I used Killbox to delete those files, it said "Did not seem to exist" for all of them (even after show all hidden files/folders, etc.).

Startup was slow, something still lagging?

Hi sonja27
We are making progress.

The first 2 with expectnothing.com is my homepage, does that make a difference or did they still need to be deleted?

You can always reset home page, I looked and wasn't sure so I took it off. Knowing you can reset it.

Startup was slow, something still lagging?

Yes still signs of stubborn Vundo we need to get rid of.
Lets run the vundfix again and when done open in safe mode and run your scann.exe and see if you can put a check at these:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5DF80515-35A9-4092-B951-30EEBA525A17} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\jkkll.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: jkkll - C:\WINDOWS\System32\jkkll.dll

WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked and exit
The major culprit is jkkll.dll, lets try after vundo fix the killbox for this one:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\jkkll.dll
Reboot and post a new log, Let me know if the PC is behaving better?
Good luck mschroe919
I didn't see this one: O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5DF80515-35A9-4092-B951-30EEBA525A17} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\jkkll.dll BUT I saw one like it, it had a different set of numbers above and ended with c:\windows\system32\jkkll.dll - do I check that one and fix it? Vundofix is still unable to kill jkkll.dll - it wouldn't start up correctly upon reboot. I can try something different on that too, maybe it will do it right. In the mean time, please let me know about hijackthis. Just a note: I really appreciate the time you are taking to help me!
Hi sonja27,
don't give up we have more things do if this don't do it;
Lets do a maual vundo fix:
vundofix Manual

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat

After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis.

If you domn't see the line O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5DF80515-35A9-4092-B951-30EEBA525A17} - C:\WINDOWS \System32\jkkll.dll

c:\windows\system32\jkkll.dll

Yes fix it but before you do give me the whole line.
good luck mschroe919
I seem to be having trouble with VundoFix. I went to the link from your first reply and downloaded it to my desktop. It wasn't a zip file or anything, just an .exe program & icon on my desktop. I double clicked it and windows asked if I wanted to run this program even though it is not digitally signed and I clicked yes. It got me to the part where I can choose to scan for Vundo. I didn't see any new file on my desktop nor did I find a killvundo.bat. Am I doing something wrong?
Hi sonja27,

Fixing Registry
————————————————————————————–
Hello sonja27,
Pat yourself on the back, your doiung a great job.

Upon start up and each time I reboot, I am getting a message as a pop up before anything else starts up
"RUNDLL - Error loading …..system32\wyvltof.dll"

Not to worry, left over remnants of the Vundo infection.
We will get it now.
FIRST:
Click on start, then on the RUN tab, then in the box marked open, type in msconfig and then click ok.
This brings up a window called system configuration utilities.
On the top of that window click on the tab called startup and seeif there is a box marked
wyvltofi.dll. If it is uncheck and reboot.
When rebooting a window will pop up asking a change was made just click the little box that says don't show me this and continue.
NEXT:
open your scann.exe and put a check by:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [InfoData] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\wyvltofi.dll",realset
WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked and exit
NEXT:
We have to get rid of the C:\WINDOWS\system32\wyvltofi.dll
Perform the following steps, also while in safe mode:

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste the following line:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wyvltofi.dll
then click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file. It will ask for confimation to backup and delete the file. Click Yes.
NOTE:
This Vundo infection keeps trying to get back by changing its name, now wyvltofi?
We may have to resort to the vundo fix again.
Good luvk mschroe919
reboot and post yet another log.
I ran Killbox.exe and typed in the file, "does not seem to exist" came up again.

Went to delete the following line:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [InfoData] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\wyvltofi.dll",realset
It was not there.
