I recently had a virus which was resolved here at Tom Coyote by Susan. However, there are still some issues from that the virus left behind. I'm unable to disable my Local Area Network. I was able to before the virus hit me but after getting it fixed, it doesn't allow me anymore. Here is the exact error message:

"Error Disabling Connection- It is not possible to disable the connection at this time. This connection may have one or more protocals that do not support Plug-and-Play, or it may have been initiated by another user or system account."

Also, the link to all the logs about the virus and how it was fix is here:

http://forums.tomcoyote.org/Driver_irql_no…4.html&st=0

The virus itself installed a Layed Service Protocal which was use by the hacker to get information off my computer. I believe LSPFix was used to help fix that and restore my normal connection. Again, details can be found in that thread.

Also, I'm having problems with Windows Update. I can't seem to "install" patch KB931784. When I download it from Windows Update, it says it installs successfully and is found in my update history as being successfully installed. However, when I scan for new updates, it shows up KB931784 again and asks me to install it again. Before the virus, I've also had a similar problem with Microsoft Office 2000, asking me to install it sometimes when I visit certain websites but I definately have Office 2000 alraedy installed and it just keeps prompting me to install.

Any ideas on the disabling and the Windows Update? Thanks for the help.
Some more information on the Microsoft updates thing, it seems under systems32/dllcache contains the updated version files of the updates, however, the same files in system32 are the older, non replaced ones. Are the updated ones supposed to be in ddlcache and not copied over to the system32 folder? Thanks
In addition, here are the logs for the microsoft updates. It all started going screwy after KB929338. Here is KB931784 as well. Thanks for the help [KB929338.log] 3.985: ================================================================================ 3.985: 2007/03/29 00:19:50.171 (local) 3.985: Hi JCInfected,

I see that you are still working with Susan over in Malware Removal, AND that she has recommended you to post here for additional recommendations.

Susan has superb skill and knowledge, so it will be a joy to work in collaboration with her.
However, replies may be somewhat delayed, as I may sometimes wish to consult before posting. Please be patient.

The following may be redundant to the work you've already performed in Malware Removal.
However, please complete all of the steps recommended below and post back with any problems.

Please run the following command and then take a screen-shot of the entire panel report.

First:
Start - Run - (type)cmd
At the DOS prompt type - ipconfig /all

Next:
Press and hold down the "alt" key, and then strike the Print Screen key once

Open MS Paint and copy the screen shot into Paint
Start - All Programs - Accessories - Paint
Edit - Paste (pastes the screen-shot image into Paint window)
File - Save As - (name the file "ipconfig all" without the quotes and notice that the / backslash is also removed)
Select File type as JPG
SAVE (remember the location where you've saved this image.

Now use the link at the bottom of my signature in this thread to use PhotoBucket to "host" your image.

Next:
Post the image "ipconfig all.jpg" into your next reply in this thread.

Best Regards
JCInfected,

Here's an example how the "ipconfig all.jpg" will look when posted.
This example is from the machine I am presently using.

Hi again JCInfected,

Separate from the above recommendations, you can perform the following in response to your question:

Some more information on the Microsoft updates thing, it seems under systems32/dllcache contains the updated version files of the updates, however, the same files in system32 are the older, non replaced ones. Are the updated ones supposed to be in ddlcache (<– typo, I believe) and not copied over to the system32 folder? Thanks

Run System File Checker
Since you indicate that you can "see" your various updates in the dllcache, but your system "behaves" as if they are missing, you may benefit from the Windows File Protection function of System File Checker.

Start - Run - (type)sfc /scannow - Enter <– notice the space between "c" and "/"

Windows File protection will flash a black DOS screen that will vanish before you can read it.
Then the Windows File Protection "progress bar" will appear to track progress as SFC scans your machine.
SFC may call for an XP installation CD
Please let us know if it does.
I don't remember from your other post, if you actually have the XP CD available.

Hopefully, SFC will identify any missing or corrupt Operating System files and replace them from your more updated dllcache Folder.

If the process stalls, or refuses to recognize the XP CD or can't find the dllcache, please copy down the "error/warning message" exactly, and post it here in your next reply.

Best Regards
Thank you Dough for your help. Susan has definately been great through all this and she has really helped me a lot. Hopefully you guys will be able to solve this problem I'm having. I'm grateful to you guys. Sorry if I seemed impatient as I was kinda afraid I was being ignored. Now that I know that the length of time it's taking to me is a result of consultation with others, I'll be less impatient. Thank you for letting me know.

First of all, here's the screenshot you requested. And yes, ddlcache was a typo. I meant dllcache. I'll post the other stuff you requested in the next post. Thanks Dough

Just some additional info before I do the sfc scan. I've ran QFECheck.exe to see which microsoft updates were installed correctly and it listed that a whole bunch were not installed correctly, which was weird, not just the ones that I reported. Some did have the same file versions in dllcache and in system32 folder and matched the descriptions in the knowledge bases at Microsoft.com. The error always stated that: "The following files are not valid in the system catalog" I'll post the log below, if you want the verbose output, I can post it: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] © Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. That is supposedly supposed to be there for the windows file protection to be enabled. Is that supposed to be like that? If not, I'm worried that SFC might not be accurate. Also, I download KB931784 patch manually from Microsoft and it seemed to install successfully….. but not without errors in the log which is below. Still seems to be a lot of errors in the log but when I run windows update, it doesn't prompt me for it to install anymore. Another update, I downloaded the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer and I tried to run a scan to see if the QFECheck was really accurate about the microsoft updates. When I tried to run the tool, it gave me the followin error message: "The catalog file is damaged or an invalid catalog." Also, my computer name that was automatically entered into the box was "WORKGROUP\*error*" which leads me to believe that this issue also has to do with my networking problem. Thanks again
Hi JCInfected,

Wow. What a ton of information you are collecting.
(Makes a guy wonder about how many other machines are out there with failed MS patches!!!)

I'm a little "reluctant" to even mention what may be ahead of us with the MS Updates.
That being…. a "possible" need to Uninstall and re-download/re-install the updates and patches.
Exhausting, at best. Complicated and rife with pitfalls and risks.
I can almost hear my mentors and the senior members here groaning…. "don't go there."

So, before you dive into any more specific and complicated investigations, let's try the simple steps….
___________

Let's see if we can "refresh" your network interface configuration.
The following steps are "automated", relying on native Windows commands, and best of all… Safe!
Please take the following steps exactly as typed. You can copy/paste the specific "ipconfig /command" to avoid spelling/typo errors.

Start - Run - (type)ipconfig /releaseall - Enter <– You will see a DOS box flash momentarily on the screen, but it will disappear before you are able to read it. That's OK.

Start - Run - (type)ipconfig /renew - Enter <– You will see a DOS box flash momentarily on the screen, but it will disappear before you are able to read it. That's OK.

Start - Run - (type)ipconfig /flushdns - Enter <– You will see a DOS box flash momentarily on the screen, but it will disappear before you are able to read it. That's OK.
_____________

Next:
Run CHECKDISK

Start- Run - (type)chkdsk /f /r - Enter
You will immediately receive a Warning, that CHECKDISK is unable to run because it cannot "lock" the files/drive and or that the files are in use. <— That's OK
You will then be invited to allow CHECKDISK to run the next time you re-boot your machine.
Select "Y" for Yes
Reboot your machine.
CHECKDISK will begin its scan for "bad-clusters" and perform a read/write to move any recoverable system files to healthly locations on your Hard Drive. It will then "mark" the identified "bad-sector" so that your Operating System does not attempt to use that small area of your Hard Drive again. <– That's a good thing
All Hard Drives have "bad-sectors" (even "new" Hard Drives) It just takes a while for the OS to identify all the surface areas and catalogue them for use or exclusion.
In ordinary use, the Operating System may not "visit" some areas of the Hard Drive until it starts getting filled up to the point of needing to use some of the previously un-visited "empty space".
CHECKDISK will do a comprehensive total HD scan, even of the "empty space".
CHECKDISK usually takes between 20-40 minutes, depending on the size of the Hard Drive.

Note: CHECKDISK may need to be run "multiple" times, until it completes its scan "without identifying bad-clusters" and without moving/replacing any files.
If CHECKDISK "does" identify a bad-cluster or move a file, then Run CHECKDISK a 2nd and even 3rd time until the full scan completes without identifying any bad-clusters

Next:

Go ahead and Run your System File Checker

Start - Run - (type)sfc /scannow - Enter

Please report back with precise observations of what SFC does.
The complete SFC Scan usually takes between 9 and 20 minutes, but can take longer.
If SFC appears to complete almost instantly or within a couple of minutes…….. Then it didn't complete the scan.
Unfortunately, there is no "Report" produced by SFC, and the only way to tell if it is "finding" and "replacing" any missing or corrupted files, is to watch during the scan. Still, you may only note SFC call for the XP CD once, and all subsequent read-write cycles may complete without alerts….. or not. Sorry. Windows File Protection System File Checker is a "good" utility that safely does its job, but just doesn't give the owner/user much information about "what" it's doing.

If SFC appears to fail…. There are additional steps that we can take.
_______________

Please give us a report about your machine's functioning "after" you've completed the above steps.

Best Regards
Ok, I did all those steps. For the sfc /scannow, it said "Please wait while Windows verifies that all protected Windows files are intact and their original values" That scan completed and then it reported nothing and nothing else happened. I believe this took about 5 mins? Not sure if this works. I then checked my ddlcache directory and found that there was a lot less files in there after the scan. I ran QFECheck after and it still reports the those hotfixes need to be reinstalled. Another weird thing is that I lost about 600 MB of space for the scan. I redid the scan a second time and now I'm short about 1 GB from my original available disk space. I'll try and restart and see if I get it back. I restarted my computer and I still have that 1 GB lost. I think I've found the culprit, I found that the pagefile.sys had been modified during the time of the scan. It's located in C: and the pagefile.sys is now 1 GB. Is that supposed to be? Also, any idea with the "The catalog file is damaged or an invalid catalog." and "WORKGROUP\*error*" for the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer ? Thanks

It's located in C: and the pagefile.sys is now 1 GB. Is that supposed to be?

Default setting for swapdisk paging is to allow windows to manage the size of swap according to operational needs.
Pagefile will therefore be of various sizes from time to time.
Windows will expand a file that starts out too small and may shrink it again if it is larger than necessary

Also, any idea with the "The catalog file is damaged or an invalid catalog." and "WORKGROUP\*error*" for the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer ? Thanks

Working on this second one.
Thanks for the help. I found that for some reason, I checked my virtual memory settings and it seems that it's a custom size of 1 GB. I believe the SFC scan did this automatically but i'm not sure. Should I reset this setting to "System Managed Size" as it's on "Custom Size" right now. And just to make sure, did my SFC scan work good or do you need more information? Thanks
Another update, I was able to get the Security Analyzer to run. I was missing a Windows update file that I needed to install before it would work. Also, the 1 GB I lost might not have been due to the pagefile.sys, by any chance do you konw where SFC scan might store backups or additional files? I checked my restore pts and it didn't create any. However, I believe I've found the culprit to my problem. I ran the Security Analyzer and I found that all my windows updates were fine. I randomly manually checked the file versions and dates and their entries in the registry and found that they were correct. Apparently QFECheck tool does 2 checks, one in the registry to see if the file version is greater or equal to the value in the registry and checks its catalog to verify if it's correct. I believe my issue is the catalog issue. I think it may be corrupt. A couple of the updates that had no problems, their files were in the dllcache directory. I believe the sfc scan delete the other files from my dllcache directory because those files were not valid according to my catalog. Do you think this would be it? Thanks
Yep, it was my catalog files that were corrupted as I deduced. I simply disabled cryptographic services and renamed the catroot2 folder and restarted, and then Windows recreated my catroot2 folder and everything was fine. I can now disable/enable my LAN and all the security updates pass the qfecheck tool. Thanks a lot for the help Dough. Just one more question, do you know by any chance if and where the sfc scan creates/keeps temporary files? I think my lost of 1 GB might not be the pagefile.sys. And should I set my virutal memory settings back to System managed? It's at 1GB right now. Thanks
